It's definitely an interesting topic to touch on, especially since the solution of, "just don't buy products that are made in poor working conditions" will suddenly happen. I mean, we all have smart phones and laptops. And let's say that we do stop, and some factories close down. What will happen to the unemployed factory workers in the meantime? They will be out of a job and unable to support their families. Countries like China don't have a good government support system for their impoverished, unemployed citizens.

@fruitygarlic36015 жыл бұрын
@yomammasheknowz You say that these people may have 'chosen' their jobs, but how could they? The only semblance of choice these people really have is between dying now or dying _after_ a life of exploitative labour. None of us (and especially not the actual workers) will benefit from the free market. The only people who get an easy pass are the ones who underpay their workers -- and are probably so old that they'll die before their hyper-capitalism destroys the planet. A bit bold of you to say these countries aren't developed, when China -- where a lot of these good are manufactured and sold -- has one of the most sophisticated and harmful global economies. It's a terrifying example of late stage capitalism. You say yourself that we take things for granted in 'developed' countries, and your comment is working proof of that.
@mcrosemasters30605 жыл бұрын
@@fruitygarlic3601 I heard a speaker one time and he touched on this. What he said was that yes to us in the first world it's terrible how the workers are treated/paid. But to those that live in a third world or an upcoming 2nd world place that these provide money and things that these people would not have. They may be only getting 2 dollars a day but that is 2 dollars more that they wouldnt have. And these people need those 2 dollars. I am by no means trying to say that it's the best way to do things or that it is even the right way but these problems should be looked not by our standards but by those of the country they live in. For some families that 2 dollars a day is all they are going to get and what would happen to that family if it was taken away.
@wingardiumlachancla90785 жыл бұрын
Keep on buying on Wish, as long as you remember that underpaid workers made the items you buy #peopleslogic
@showersofstardust5 жыл бұрын
That's more so consumerism's fault, not capitalism's. If we all weren't so entitled to good deals on non-essential goods then this wouldn't be an issue. The issue is that we, as consumers, have become entitled and have demanded for *more* goods and *better* goods at *lower* costs... businesses are then left with little to no choice, especially with government regulations restricting their options. Capitalism isn't perfect by any means -- it is certainly flawed -- but I think if more customers thought about their purchasing decisions a little harder we'd be in a better place with a healthier marketplace.
@nimeryaspawnbrd10495 жыл бұрын
That reflection time could have look so much deeper and meaningful without menchie catwalking (yes, I know, I'm a horrible person) on poor beyyyyn's head 😅 And still a very good reflection One can blame the producer, not the marketplace. But one can also avoid the whole marketplace just to be safe... everyone is entitled to his own choices

Thank you for speaking about the exploitation of labor in other countries! That honestly applies to all fast fashion as well ie forever 21 h&m etc etc. I know for most of us financies are harsh and wth the rising cost of living it’s just getting even rougher out there that we can only really rely on these companies for our clothes but there are serious consequences to our shopping choices :( there’s a documentary on Netflix discussing this called the true cost. Everyone should check it out! But my issue is how do we still make ethical affordable choices? :( I’m still searching for real answers.

Hey I think it's really cool that you talked a bit about working conditions in China with your boyfriend. Sometimes I buy things off Wish too, but also sometimes I feel guilty when I think of all the smartphones we have without worrying. But as you said it's not about shaming the consumers, but just talking about it may change the mentalities of consumers and therefore maybe the companies. If anyone is interested in that topic, just look for documentaries on Samsung/Apple productions. I saw one in French a couple weeks ago and if you wait in front of a factory, you can see little teenagers/kids going out to rejoin their dorms... But anyway I just wanted to say that it's very cool that you mentioned this stuff :)

Yeah I find this topic a bit tricky to navigate since 90% of affordable retail clothing stores outsource production to factories like where the wish clothes are coming from. I think it will take a culture shift,where one, people don't need a bottomless supply of clothes for cheap and have just a few pieces that are made ethically and two,It becomes socially acceptable to wear the same thing over and over (not saying wear dirty clothes), to truly remedy this problem (or...like the death of capitalism lol). Its all well and good to criticise wish for most probably unregulated labour practises but if you are sitting there wearing a forever 21 shirt then...

Yeah, I subscribed just because she is hilarious, and I've been noticing her "random moments of sober mature sincerity" for a while, but it wasn't until the "school hacks" video that I realized she is legitimately an amazing person and made me even happier that she has become so popular. She's easily one of my top favorite youtubers now and the site needs WAAAAY more people like her in the spotlight.

Thank you so much for that bit at the end about the terrible reality surrounding cheap clothing items. This is why I love y’all. Not just the silliness, not just the beautiful holo, but also because you’re genuinely good people with a good message and a willingness to tell people the truth. I am so proud to be a subscriber. Not many channels have the balls to inform their audience.
@stephasauurus7 жыл бұрын
Not only are the work conditions of the outsourced clothing manufacturers overseas terrible, but because the clothes are mostly terrible quality they end up in the trash. This in turn takes up a LOT of space in landfills, and takes decades to degrade and make more room. Many of the items can even take hundreds of years due to all the harmful chemicals used to process the garments and grow the GMO'd cotton. At the rate the fashion industry is creating these cheap throwaway garments, the planet is at serious risk for permanent damage that we can't reverse. If you want to know more details about these issues check out the documentary The True Cost. There's also thousands of articles online and in print about the dangers of this business model.

Stephanie Gunawan to add to all of this we can’t just think of it as overseas, far away; it happens in the US. (Don’t know if you are US citizen or know about it’s prison systems) but for those that do not know, US private prison systems act as slave camps where prisoners work for pennies to make shitty (and not shitty, but it is still slave labor) products for shitty (and not ***seemingly***) shitty companies. Christine is right, it is hard to ethically shop, but there are ways to make mindful choices!
@DiabolicalButler6 жыл бұрын
the original poster is probably american. 99 percent of americans think its ok to treat prisoners like animals. its known by all americans about prison rape being rampant but they think the prisoner deserves it even if they just wrote a bad check or some petty bullshit

Thank you so much for the talk at the ending. I recently in school had a unit about those awful conditions that children are put into, more commonly known a sweatshops. Now I can never look at my Nike shoes the same way or that T - Shirt I spent $20 for and the worker who made it probably got less than a penny. It’s so awful but it’s hard to be an ethical consumer when practically all of our clothing is made in sweatshops and it makes me sad.

im so glad they talked about consumerism, I feel very passionate about that shit. I try to do my part by only shopping thrift/used so at least my money won't be directly funding the companies who do harm to people and the environment
@yasaminwhy82126 жыл бұрын
andrea it was a great part of the video. I also try to shop second hand or save up for Fairtrade if I can, and I'm in the fortunate position to be able to do that, but I know a lot of people who are unaware of the real problems behind fast fashion, along with a lot of very aware people.
@Hughjasslol16 жыл бұрын
andrea you do realize these workers don’t have any better alternatives? No one wants to voluntarily work at those factories, but they do because it’s the only way they can make money.
@yasaminwhy82126 жыл бұрын
You're right to an extent. A lot of workers move from the countryside to cities in Bangladesh, Pakistan etc. where there is some degree of medical help available and the prospect of work. But what a compelling argument you make for these companies to behave ethically and pay a living wage- they do indeed have the monopoly on employment in some areas, or at least meaningful and long-lasting employment. (I'm mainly talking about mainstream fashion here, but Wish seems to operate out of China a lot, and ofc China has notoriously poor working standards in many areas.) If these companies were to raise their ethical standards and stop using middle-men to operate their factories and employ their production line workers, how many lives would be improved enormously.

Cristine's only the 2nd person I've seen mention the way this stuff was probably made. The other was Annika Victoria, who thrifts items and actually tried to remake some things from wish herself.

That little heart to heart at the end about the possible conditions that these clothes came from is really important. As consumers we vote with our wallets, and we need to be responsible and make sure that the companies that we support are ethical in the way they run their business. If you have have the means, try and shop ethically. If you don't thrift shops and clothing drives are a great way to get items you need at a reduced cost that don't support businesses who exploit cheap labor. Anyway, stepping off my soapbox now, have a great day everyone! :)

cant we just let people buy what they want?? i've used wish a lot, that doesnt make me a bad person. i just dont have thousand of crowns(danish money) to buy the actual products. if you dont like wish, dont use it, but dont tell others that they cant use it, because you're against it. its like saying "im a vegan, so you cant eat meat!" or "i don't play video games, so you cant do it either"
@bebop457 жыл бұрын
@Purple Unicorn nowhere did this person try to tell people where to shop or suggest you're a bad person for shopping at wish. they very reasonably suggested people should be more mindful of where they shop which isnt asking a lot

+Purple Unicorn she did say if you have the means try and shop ethically.
@AlbinoAxolotl7 жыл бұрын
Purple Unicorn Purple Unicorn Purple Unicorn I think the point that is being made is just what was said: we vote with out wallets. If you personally are fine supporting a company that exploits people in developing countries, has poor labor practices, or takes advantage of their workers then fine, that is up to you, but you need to know that your money supports their business practices and there is no way around that. I didn’t see anyone telling you what to do either in the video or the above comment, just people trying to educate others. I don’t have a lot of extra money to buy the best, organic/fair trade/locally produced/top of the line products every time and it sucks feeling like the only way I can buy the things I need are from companies that may not be all above board, however I can work to educate myself on where my things are coming from so I can at least try and do the most good (or more like do the least harm) within the realm of what I’m able to. No one can be perfect all the time, but we can at least try. Like it was stated in the video, in many developed and western countries we don’t see the conditions that many of our products are produced in, so it’s important that we try to make the extra effort to find that out for ourselves, because regular support of unethical businesses makes a difference in allowing them to continue what they’re doing. No one is going to stop you, and the reason these businesses are so successful is because they know how to get people to buy from them- paying employees little and using the cheapest materials is a perfect way to pass on the savings to you! It’s a winning formula, but that doesn’t mean is doesn’t have negative consequences for others who aren’t ourselves. What we want to do about that is up to each of us.
@Bonowme7 жыл бұрын
Purple Unicorn you just took the message said in the video and comment and just ripped it to shreds. Of course buying shit on wish for minimal amount of money makes you a bad person. You’re letting underpaid children and women who can barely make a living out of their pay just because you want some useless crap for your own enjoyment. These people work over 12 hours a day and they barely survive the toxic fumes and bad air conditioning in the fabrics. We live in a society where we are addicted to buying new things that don’t have any meaning or real usage in our lives, we just want stuff to have it.
