I can understand why this scares Cristine. She understands a lot of the sides here -- the responsibility on behalf of the creator to not lead their followers into a scam or losing their money being the biggest one, I bet. Having your followers place their financial future in your hands adds pressure to you, the creator, to not let them lose that investment, and there's a chance that you maybe didn't have a full say in participating in that in first place. It's a lot of variables not in the creators control, and not guaranteed safe for the user/the influencer's fans.

The audience for a lot of these people being very young and impressionable is also a huge morally ambiguous point here. Thinking about 15 year old susan seeing a famous person they follow tweet this out and then thinking they have to get in on it is really sketchy to me

@@johndododoe1411 There's a really well done book about the topic titled Bad Blood. The founder dropped out of college after her freshman year. She had an idea that was I believe impossible. During early development she was very stubborn, did not like what experts were telling her, and made demands that lead to such a scam of a product.

We all went crazy saying bens voice is ‘audibly soothing’. If he did audio books too I would go crazy. I love listening to these podcasts at night and (not negatively) it puts me to sleep faster than laying in the dark. But I always play the same podcast multiple times because I’ve never actually heard a whole podcast, I think there’s a few I’ve watched the whole way through during the day while doing tedious hand sewing but I just could never imagine going to sleep without a podcast 😂

The most off putting difference for me personally between online “trading cards” and analogue ones is that with digital stuff, it’s gone when the service gets shut down. My Ouya became pretty much useless when their site shut down in 2019, but my ancient GameBoy Pocket still works (although some cartridges have trouble saving because they’re so old).

This was definitely an interesting discussion, and I don't think people watching were encouraged to get into cryptocurrency, but I so wish they would have mentioned the huge environmental impact of cryptocurrency! The analogy with someone making trading cards of a celeb was great- but the huge difference would be the carbon footprint of creating and shipping trading cards as opposed to the giant energy cost of the blockchain calculations that are behind cryptocurrency.
