I like the engagement ring comment, because I proposed to my boyfriend a couple weeks ago, and he's the one wearing the ring. I've made a deposit on him. So many people have assumed I'm forcing him to get married, or he wasn't ready to get engaged. No, we talked about it, I asked him out, I proposed. We're of the same mindset, like Ben and Cristine, so it doesn't matter who does what, as long as we agree.

I REALLY wanted to propose to my now-husband, but he didn't feel comfortable with it because he's more traditional than I am. He also didn't wear a ring until we were married. I think it's the idea of "passing down the bloodline" which I think stems from the old times, and the idea of keeping bloodlines "pure." And the idea that the adoption of a child isn't "legitimate." Which isn't true, in the past its all about family is blood but now it's family is people who care and are there for you and that's what's important.

I found this very enlightening. The last two years, one of the difficult aspects to my relationship, has been my expression of emotion and feelings and my partners lack of entirely. I struggle with many things, but I found it difficult being in bed and thinking endlessly and turning to him and asking how he is, what he is thinking - and getting one word answers and 'not thinking at all'. Felt on my own so much.

I've never wanted to have kids, but the societal pressure is so intense that when I found out I was barren, I was actually RELIEVED that I could tell people that so they'd leave me alone. Sadly people have now moved on to nagging me about adoption. I have a million health issues and shouldn't adopt, so I have something to say to shut people up, but man... Why does anyone have to present "valid reasons" regarding not wanting to have kids? It should be enough to say you just don't want them.

Love what you said about having kids. My aunt dated a lot of people when she was younger due to societal pressures but eventually just realized she was happier on her own. I used to ask her all the time why she wouldn’t have kids and why I didn’t have cousins to play with, and she said she wasn’t meant to be a mom, she was meant to be a Tía (Aunt in Spanish). She is truly my role model, she’s so level headed and she is literally the cool aunt I didn’t know I needed. My parents are great, but I can always talk to my Tía about my life openly without her getting overly involved, she is able to give me honest unbiased advice, and she always says she gets to do all the fun parts of being a mom like seeing us smile, taking me to the nail salon ;) and helping us with our schoolwork, without the annoying stuff like taking care of a baby, dealing with my stupid teenage angst ha. Y’all would be an awesome cool Tía and Tío.

I had a miscarriage when I was 18, and ever since my heart breaks more and more when my friends and (abusive) family pester me about having kids not even taking my feelings into consideration. Marriage isnt as triggering for me, but when I lost my son my views changed on pregnancy and children forever. I still want kids, but at the same time I feel like I failed my son when I lost him, I feel incapable of being a good mom because I couldn't even give my son life. It's been almost two years and I'm still scared to try again...

Just by reading your comment I can already tell you’d be an amazing mother. If your willing to try again, I think you’d do just fine😊 But this negative mindset will really take a toll on you. If a heaven exists, I bet your son will be smiling at you all grown up with open arms saying “I’m proud of you Mom!” cause you should be proud. MAMA BEAR YOU LITERALLY CARRIED A CHILD. YOU’RE ALREADY A SUPERHERO, CARRYING A CHILD IS A BIG TASK. Anywho, if you truly want to try again, get rid of that mentally and physically breaking negative mindset. Such a strong person deserves to smile without a weight on their shoulders😕Take a spa day, meditate, relax for a bit, you deserve a relaxing you-time. You’ll be okay mama bear😊

If that 18 isn't a typo then you're actually still very young and many people still have to figure out who they are and what they want when they are in their (early) 20s. It also takes some time to process such a severely bad experience and to accept the past as it is. When I received sex-education our teacher said that many women especially those who have several children experience miscarriages. I don't know if anyone ever made you feel guilty for it but I think there should be no guilt if there was no intention & if the miscarriage wasn't caused by a genetic defect (something you can't controll at all) then all of your life circumstances played a role in that and maybe it would (mentally & physically) help you to change your material and social environment before having kids. Pregnancy and birth are not a one-(wo)man-show and it takes a village to raise a child.

I had a miscarriage when I was 19 and I lost my daughter. I live with a similar situation as you so I couldn’t go to PP and get the extraction done until two years later. So now it’s very likely I might not even be able to have kids because my uterus is “traumatised”. Every time my mother especially talks about how she doesn’t want me to adopt but have kids biologically because she could never love adopted grandkids as much as bio grandkids.

A professor of mine told us when people would badger her about not having kids as an "older" woman (she was like 40's or 50's) she would just make a sad face, shrug and say "It just didn't happen." It turns people from judgemental to embarassed and apologetic real quick.

I loathe it because I'm 18 and absolutely adore small children so people automatically assume but I want them. Even though I've made it so so so clear that I've had enough parenting to last my life because I have a four-year-old brother. Yes I'm young, yes I love children, yes I absolutely loathe the idea of having my own. So I won't. The bullshit about how you might regret that when you're older or you'll change your mind is trash. I don't want something living inside of me, I don't want to have to push it out, I don't want to deal with the medical expenses and aftercare and parenting full-time.

Just going to put it out there but if someone calls you a bitch and stops being your friend because you won't date them, they're not your friend. So many guys think that getting close to a "girl" or being loving and supportive of them entitles them to a relationship and so often that's the only reason why they put that work in. I don't think we need to be coddling their feelings over it if they blow up from being rejected, because they're only blowing up like that because they feel like they're being denied something they've "earned".

i grew up feeling almost a pressure from stereotypes that i HAD to have kids and i HAD to get married to a man, and that left me with a lot of issues as im growing up. i realised i really wanted a career and that was important to me. i realised i liked girls AND guys and that left me VERY confused with what i wanted still, do i want to be the stereotype and marry a man, is that really what i want or was that years of pressure from society?? and then there's wanting kids, ive always grown up with the thought that women just have kids and thats it, but it made me really think about what i want, and what i want is to have a happy life, get married and have kids one day as well as a great career for myself, but it's been hard figuring out if thats because i grew up with that stereotype or if i actually want it. however all i know for sure is that what matters is im happy!! and if what i want changes, thats okay!!! so for anyone who feels kinda like me, its okay to not know now, and your opinions CAN (but they might not) change. as long as you're happy and healthy then that's all that matters, take your time to figure out what you want and what makes you happy!!

I appreciate Ben saying "Just don't ask." on the topic of having kids. I'm on the opposite side of y'all on the kids/no kids issue. I've always wanted to have babies and be a mom but I wasted 10 years in a relationship that went nowhere and now I'm 48 and can't have any children. It's always a sensitive subject for me when people ask me if I have kids or why didn't I have them. And I can understand how that would be frustrating for those that don't want children too.

It is SO refreshing to hear someone with as large of a platform as you say: “This is my belief, my truth, and if you feel differently, THAT’S OKAY! I’m happy for YOU to have your beliefs. This is simply what works for me, and I’m happy you have what works for you.” Especially on the topic of marriage and kids, because so often people have a mentality that you HAVE to agree, HAVE to do the same things they want. Authenticity and respectfulness about these topics are a ray of sunshine. So, thank you for being mature and respectful to people who want different things, I hope you guys receive respect and understanding for your beliefs/ life desires too!

I've noticed lately that the large majority of the youtubers I watch say this kind of thing throughout at least a few videos even if it's not every video. Like even Tati Westbrook the makeup guru? Every couple videos "lemme just remind you this is how I do things and i hate a product you love? USE IT. We might have different skin or different preferences."

Yes. I love her attitude about all of this. I absolutely hate when people just HAVE to make everything black and white- it's either one extreme end or the other and if there are any disagreements or everything is not the same thinking that somehow makes someone a horrible person. Cmon, lets just respect each other, not shit on each other, have freedom to make choices based on out beliefs and understand that in real life most things are not black and white, one extteme or the other. Often, it's just in one big gray area, with a variety of different opinions and such on one topic

I’m so glad you talked about unwanted kids. My father didn’t want me, but my mom wanted me - it was very obvious growing up and I suffered a lot of emotional abuse and guilt. I tried so hard to get him to love me, and it still affects me. As an adult, I know I don’t want kids and I would NEVER want them to feel the way I did growing up.

i feel very strongly about having children. i have always wanted children and still do and would absolutely adore my children when i have them. i feel as if it’s something i am made to do, in no way do i think all woman are meant to do it or think i am being pressured to do it. i feel as if everyone has a passion and this is mine. people should realise not all woman have a passion of being a mother and they shouldn’t have standards of woman “ being made to have baby’s” all that leads to is bad mothers and unhappy children. i think it’s wonderful that you don’t want kids and if you did want kids that would be wonderful too. be who you want to be and if having children isn’t a part of that then simply don’t have children.

Me too but I'm most likely going to have my future kids through a donor once I have the money, a good home for a family, have already gone to therapy to address some of the toxic parts of myself so I don't project onto them, and have already done most of my bucket list travelling because I honestly don't see a romantic relationship in my future and I can't really see myself loving a man in that way

Essentially everyone is being pressured in MANY ways in society to have children. It's just built into the culture, this expectation, and all the media and fears around the subject, like your biological clock ticking, all the way to "who will visit you when you're elderly". A lot of people have very direct pressure from people in their lives, but that's just additional pressure. This also isn't to say that everyone is experiencing these things as pressure, many people brush these things off or hardly notice it, but it's there. Same with marriage. I like your comment though. Also like with what Oncerand_ Directioner may do, I hope you at least strongly consider adoption, and the reasons why you wouldn't. Ask yourself the questions, get to the bottom of exactly why you feel doing one over the other is preferable. I think it's pretty hard to justify not adopting if one wants kids, but yea just throwing it out there!

Thank you for mentioning fertility issues. Every time someone asks me if I don't want children, or when we will finally have children, I could cry (once I actually did). I really want children, I love babies, I have loved babies when I was still a toddler myself. But I can't! But I really don't want to explain this to people. So I try to change the topic awkwardly... 😖

SO MANY PEOPLE just need to admit they shouldn’t have kids. It’s okay to not be ready, ever, for kids. Some people just need to say, hey, I’m too selfish to focus on a child, I’m not financially able, I don’t work hard enough to make things work, I’m not good with kids, etc. And that’s okay.

@@motherdemoness2739 yes, I know. I answered to the OP to explain that you don't necessarily need a marriage, but you need to make preparations so the partner is secure. A will is also extremely important, bc I had to see the children of a unmarried couple throw out the man that built the house, that paid for their university education, that was like a father (and not known to be an asshole, choleric or creepily invested in kids. no red flags. but the kids were assholes) after the woman died very suddenly, they kicked him out. like he paid, but the house was on the wifes name bc she started it with her first HB who died. so.. they treated him this bad and he was too heart broken to sue for what was his, bc he could argue that he paid for a lot and has moral rights to at least a bit of her stuff. bc he paid for it. I don't want to see other people experience this too. and especially lgbt people still risk this treatment by hateful family

Honestly I know this is a cliche but what they said about those who force relationships typically don’t end up in the healthiest one...I think that really is so true. Just this summer I wanted a boyfriend so bad and bounced into 2 different relationships that were never gonna work out in a span of a few months, and honestly now that the second one just ended I just realized that now just isn’t my time, but that time will come. I’m in junior college right now and I think it’s gonna be best for me to just wait until I can go to university to start dating again, I just feel like that’s will be my time I don’t know why it took me this long to figure it out though!

I love what Cristine said about being "given away" by her dad. I got married almost a year ago, and was 48yo... no one 'owns' me. My dad walked me down the aisle, but I did not want anything that indicated that I was property being transferred to a new owner! Instead, the officiant (my mother) asked for a blessing from each family. My father spoke for my family, my husband's mother spoke for his family. It was a nice way to include them in the ceremony.
