Buying & Selling antiques in auction with David Harper. Episode 2 ‘Beat The Expert’
This time, I not only visit an auction and attempt to value 1000 year old Viking jewellery, Victorian chairs and an original painting of dogs, but I also try and buy one of the antiques too!
We learn all about each item and then watch as they’re sold in public antiques auction to the highest bidder.
If you watch the BBC antiques shows like Bargain Hunt, Flog It and Antiques Roadtrip, you’ll love this!
I’ll predict how much I think each antique will sell for, as well as attempt to buy an antique. See if you can predict the auction price better than me...if you do, you beat me!
Let me know how you do!

I was an early sub because I just love the passion for antiques David and I share. You may love filming them David but only 10% as much as I love watching them. Having bought and sold antiques from auctions for 30 years myself, I have nowhere near the expertise of David but I did beat him on all 3 lots because I have watched as the auctions have changed. 20 years ago I attended auctions which were not online, the internet was not as sophisticated and neither were mobile phones. I competed with other buyers in that room with the knowledge in my head. Today one competes with buyers all over the world, with people with mobile phones looking up porcelain marks, artist signatures and the latest recorded auction prices on their phones. More and more the people I would sell to in the trade and more importantly the final retail customer can buy at a mouseclick online. So, longwinded to the point. Chairs - David was right. Those chairs were 8 or £900 each but instead of David paying 750 the pair and selling them at a profit, the retail customer bought them directly. My theory anyway. I tend to keep objects that puzzle me and I may take David up on his offer to bounce them off him the next time I visit my attic.

If a buyer or auction house is accurate within 15% high or low with estimates on a consistent basis, they are geniuses.

I am so jealous about those chairs, I would gladly pay five grand for the set if I could afford it. Mable’s work, lifelike. Would it have made a difference to remove the backboard.? I would have valued around $700, but I expected it would go around $1500. As far as the Viking collection, oy! Fascinating, but not my cup of tea. I predicted no more than $1500. Those chairs, oh gosh, I predicted they would go for at least $700 a piece-just incredible incredible style- and honesty in them

I must admit David I am enjoying seeing you get (hoisted on your own petard) so to speak. Not being mean just it emphasis how volatile the antique business is. Thanks for your great descriptions of the pieces. It may help me (Ha!Ha! ) If I ever have anything of value or even antique for sale. Enjoy your show. From Australia.

The chairs have to have value added to them now that they have been sat in by David Harper surely!! Did you say that the auction house fee was 30%? That's a bit over the top. People are crazy paying that. Interesting as always. ATB Doug.

1)£525, somebody obviously really wanted that painting! Maybe they know something about what's behind the back board??? 🤔 🤣 2)£1450, amazing historical finds. 3)£675, they look really comfy but the valuers guide price was way out! Sorry you didn't get them. Another great video and I loved the 'badly edited' promo video, it was funny. Have a great week and see you next Sunday xxx

I am used to watching Chinese antique auctions at Sotheby's, Christie's, and the like, so this seemed like free stuff in comparison but the chairs surprised me! Also, I did not know a set of Viking jewelry was that cheap! I thought they would go for at least 10 000.

Great fun again David. Got close with the painting but didn't see those chairs rocketing up to £2k.

I go to antique auctions with the hope of making £1000 but in reality I normally lose about £100. 😆

What a price for those chairs! was way off the price but they were lovely. Was £1000 out on dog picture but should have known they would go a high price, after all we are supposed to be a nation of dog lovers. The Viking jewellery i did a little better on only £600 out. Great Video again.

Beat you on the picture but not on the ancient jewelry. I beat you on the chairs estimating £1k so I was still way out.
