Hi everyone, this Sundays show is a bit different to ‘Beat The Expert’. You can still compete with me and test your valuing skills, but this time I have a go at buying everything I talk about! The idea being that anything I do buy can then roll on into another video, showing the preparation and improvements you can make to add the extra value. Remember though, buying is easy, anyone can pay any price for an object...you need to build in your profit in your buying...in other words, buy a bargain only, don’t pay too much! Cheers, David

David Harper identified the blue and white decoration on the jar as "Bamboo...waterways...and a rocky outcrop". He should have been aware the three items of decoration were Bamboo, Pine and Plum ,which are collectively known in Chinese as "The Three Friends of Winter", and are revered by Chinese Scholars because "...together they symbolize steadfastness, perseverance, and resilience. They are highly regarded in Confucianism and as such represent the scholar-gentleman's ideal..." (lifted from Wikipedia!). The wooden replacement lid on the jar, he identified as "a cover made to fit". It would appear that the cover has been finely crafted in order to enhance the beauty of the jar, in other words no ordinary cover. These two factors plus his correct identification of the piece as probably Kangxi should have led him to place a much higher valuation on the jar. It has probably sat for many, many years in a Scholar's Study as a prized piece of porcelain. Not exquisite but treasured and enjoyed. The final selling price should be no surprise.

There is a difference between what an item is worth and what it sells for at action. That's why people go to actions, to get a deal.

I got the chair spot on, but not brill on the other 2. I went £50 above you on the jar, so that made me slightly closer. I thought £750 for the games set. Beat you on 2 out of 3 in episode 2, but not great on 1 either. I watch a lot of 'Pawn Stars' in Spanish, with Spanish subtitles (to help my language learning as I live in Spain) and their prices are crazy. That gun would have made thousands there, so that kind of confused me. In fact there was one Very similar just the other day! I think they bought it for $5K! Really enjoying this, thank you!

Crazy that the chess set would now be illegal That chair was awesome. If you had got it at 360, with fees on top, what price would you have put on it? Less said about my predictions the better

My heart was in my mouth when you hopped over the chair, I had visions if the ginger jar going flying! 😂 This weeks guestimations 1) £525 - oops! , 2) £350 I didn't think people would approve of the ivory, what do I know haha 😂, 3) £525. Oh well, I will do better next week. I know I was late to the game this week but I do look forward to it, I love your presentation style and it's good fun. See you next time xxx

I am absolutely garbage at this game.....but nevertheless love the concept. Never been to an antiques auction, but would be interested to see how the sales catalogue is laid out and how you go about working buyers premium on the hammer price. Keep em coming 👍

The ginger jar is indeed an early 18th century piece, late Kangxi to early Yongzheng period. I have seen jars in similar pattern with imperial Yongzheng mark instead of the double-circle mark. If this jar was put on eBay for no-reserve auction, I believe that the realized price would be around 3,000-3,500 pounds.

You should have bought the chair and sold it to me for £850! We both would be winners!! ☺️

I predicted 650 for the jar, David - but I had it at 1500 until I heard your own estimate. Either way you lose, buddy. You beat me with the games set, though (750). How could you not, when you were spot on? Well done!! Beat you on the chair, too, though!! (450)
