25 years Army maintenance here. Love to see the ol girl back on the trail. I wanted to mention in case it's not been said before that there is a switch plugged in next to the washer bottle that controls the cooling fan. It's for fording water, if you put the truck in neutral and slam on the gas it activates the switch and will shut the fan off for 15 seconds or so giving you time to enter the water. Doing so otherwise you risk shearing all the blades off the fan. My only other advise is " brake throttle modulation" when stuck like that you can gently ride the brake and power through it. It fools the truck into delivering power equally on all four wheels. Hit me up anytime if you need extra tips. I went to AM General school at the factory in 2012

Pretty sure they have funky diffs in them that are designed to lock up when there's brake application specifically for that very reason. Not a normal gear diff in there, not a normal locker either. Almost makes me wonder how difficult swapping a manual trans into one would be...

@@TestECull if you hit the brake slightly its like the free spinning wheel got resistance from the ground and the dif is diverting some power to the other wheel. maybee enough to drive out. not having lockable difs on each achsle and one between both is the biggest flaw such a vehicle can have i was allways wondering how the humvee got away with this (and without a manual transmission) the second one is not having a strong winch, extra cable, at least one snatchblock and some chans or loops with you while in that trails ;)

At AM General they told us the differential was originally developed for NASCAR but outlawed in the '70s because it allowed you to apply 100% power in the corners without losing control. Then the designer of the Humvee bought the rights and used it. As far as I know this is the only vehicle those differentials have ever been used in. I have videos of us climbing 4 ft concrete square blocks on opposing wheels by just powering through the brakes. I feel like this school should have been something every Humvee operator should have gone through day one. It was one of the best schools Army ever sent me to..

@@Total_Egal yeah.. Not having diff locks is a bit of a shock to me. You would think that would be an absolute must on these things. I'm not sure how the diff's are on these, but you can get lockers for about $1k each for regular 1 ton Dana axles. (which I know this doesn't use -- just a reference). I think putting diff locks on this is the number one upgrade I would ever do to these things.

That is a bare bones 6.2L GM slug. The trans is a TH400 3speed. The engine is a gutless plant, designed to run and idle FOREVER, the gear ratio is ideal for off-road use which doesn't demand much power. The newer HMMWVs have a turbo added to the bigger powerplant and a 4L80 4speed. The newer high output turbo engine was to accommodate the additional weight due to the addition of armor plating. There is a generator to power the radios and other auxiliary equipment that are typically installed for unit use. As already mentioned you found extra radio mast mounts. Yes the rear seats are designed to stow the way you found them to easily convert for field adaptability, two bolts hold the backrest up in place. The side wood slats should pivot down out of the way. Your doors don't fit right because they are the wrong doors, that is a soft top and the correct doors are soft doors (wireframe with vinyl cover), when the proper components are used together (and adjusted aka bent to fit) the result is pretty impressive . Be cautious going hell bent into water holes, the vehicle is more than capable, however, older units are prone to breaking the blades off the cooling fan due to age and use when coming in contact with deep water. Make sure you pay close attention to the geared hubs, they are straight cut gears and need to be treated as such. There are LOTS of other little things to keep an eye out for, look for the US Army Preventative Maintenance Magazine. They are little cartoon pamphlets with good info from the motor pool guys and gals. One last thing, at your own peril though. Those diesels can be an absolute prick to start in the cold, glow plugs or not, one trick (again at your own peril) is to have someone crank the engine while you hold a PMCS manual (any vinyl covered semi rigid book) over the exhaust.

@@64TommyG Yup Get the Intake tube and exhaust pipe for the Marine Corp version They will ford up to the top of the windshield with the deep water fording kit. With out it, I believe fording was only to 30 or 40 inches, I can`t remember which.

A tip for the fuel filter. When we do it, we take off the dog house, the cover in the cab completing the firewall (in the cab). You have a radio mount in there, but that should just pivot out of the way. It's a bit of an annoyance to get the house outta there with the radio mount on but it's two bolts to take if out if you want. After removing the dog house. There are four bolts by your right knee, you can take them out and pull the whole assembly towards you, hoses and all. Then just take out the four bolts, take the old filter out and plop in a new one. If you do it carefully, you can do it without spilling a drop of diesel. Hope this finds you well. P.S. the radio stand usually holds an AN/PRC-117, lots of different variants but F, Fox, is the usual. So I've been told, comms doesn't leave their radios in when they submit their vehicles to us.

Brings back fond memories of when I was a Mortar Platoon Leader in the 101st Abn. I had 7 HMMWV assigned to my unit. We took them everywhere! That HMMWV was like a tank. As long as you know what you are doing, they can go places that Jeep couldn't dream of. (We had jeeps and traded them in for HMMWVs!) Two biggest weaknesses - got remember to let the glow plugs heat before you start it! We went through a lot of glow plugs! And the batteries were always overheating on us. Sucks to sit over the top of batteries that are overheating! Enjoy that HMMWV! Went thru two wars with HMMWVs and they are great vehicles if they are taken care of!

We got our 3/4T HMMWVs issued in '87. It replaced our squad 2-1/2T Dump Trucks (M342A2) and my 1/4T M151A2 Jeep with 1/4T trailer. Definitely some Pluses & Minuses: Cons: Included less capacity than the 2-1/2T but increased capacity over the 1/4T Jeep (even with it's trailer). Thr Truck has a fiberglass hood and cheap, pop riveted sheet metal bed and body. Whoever heard of using fiberglass on a military truck that was going to be abused heavily? Those fiberglass louvers were an accident waiting to happen. If you tap a tree with that hood, it just shaters so easily. And it wasn't hard to rip up the rivets and tear up the sheet metal bed when you're out in the woods. The seats were so uncomfortable. Nothing but a canvas cushion sitting on top of a sheet metal battery box (for the driver) and cargo box (for the passenger). We did a 600 mile convoy between Ft Campbell & Ft Bragg. Talk about your sore backsides. Pros: You called the motor gutless? We found that truck could power through a mudhole so deep, water was about up to the windshield and come out nicely. It was a cargo truck, it handled like a cargo truck and it did it's job as a cargo truck well. The worse problem with exchanging the Jeep for a Humvee was the width of the Humvee. My Jeep was just over 5 feet wide. Narrow enough to sneak between the trees. The Humvee is 8 ft wide! Like a moose going through the brush. The jeep was light enough that 2 guys could get a jeep to climb over a fallen log and keep on going. We could easily push start a jeep if the batter went bad. A Humvee was like 3X the weight. Way too heavy. Final assessment - We sized the Humvee up as a lousy military truck, but it would make an excellent hunting truck for a farmer. It was just too awkward in the woods for military applications.

Hey Matt, a tip for off roading. Take a refillable fire extinguisher with you, the silver / chrome colour one with a schrader valve to put air pressure in it when filled with water. It will be a portable jet wash window washer to clean the windows when you finish off roading. I used to go off roading many years ago. Had one and and washed windows before hitting hte roads going home. A lot better than relying on the screen washer which only does the windscreen. :).

Those things you found in the curb side rear seat are totally antenna mounts. The ones you fit checked these on top of are beefier versions of the same function. (Edit:) Those hard doors on the vehicle are designed to go with a “turtle back” top instead of the rag top installed that you replaced with another rag top. There are wire frame soft doors that go with the rag top. All the turtle back versions have 4 doors with a hard, sloped hatch covering the cargo area. The rear seats you found are in every humvee and some are blocked off like yours (the 2-man cargo truck style), some have 4 doors for the 4-man sedan style. I’ve got some contact truck versions at the unit that have tool boxes and other stuff used for contact maintenance. They’re 2-man cargo but with 3 roll sides on the cargo area. And they still have the rear passenger wells.

After I worked on these in the military, I used to work at a facility that rebuilt these. We would road test them 50 miles in the winter. We would seal up every gap in the tops and doors with duct tape and plumb the heat on the commander side (passenger) with a heater hose (silicone dryer hose) over to the drivers hole. It wasn’t super hot but it got you by for driving in the winter. I’d say the configuration you have was set up for a unit supply vehicle or for someone like a 1st Sargent. Troop carry racks give it away. Have fun!!

That model Humvee wasn't meant to have hard doors with a canvas top. They have canvas doors that you can tweak to seal a little better, but other than that, take a rainsuit

Those fasteners are called Rivnuts. They require a special tool to install, but go in easily. Besides the low visibility from inside the cab and the school bus turn radius, humvees are fun to drive. In good weather, pop the top and have a ball.

As I recall, the two issues most common to our use were: 1. as someone else mentioned, wait for the glow plug cycle to start the engine to save the glow plugs and 2. there were run flat lube bags in the tires. The intent was that if the tire were punctured, you could continue to drive on the metal core on the rim. The lube packs would burst, and keep the friction down between the flat tire and inner rim. The problem was they would burst open on their own if the vehicle traveled more that 55 mph. As the vehicle sat, the lube would settle and coagulate in the bottom of the tire. When you started driving after sitting a while, you would feel the thump of the lube that had settled in the tire. Once it warmed up, the thumping would cease until the next time the vehicle sat for a while. I don't know if your vintage had that option, or if that system became obsolete. but if you experience that problem, that is the reason. The military specs their vehicles to be very reliable, and basically serviceable by the operator, and serviceable in a combat zone. Fun purchase for you, hope you enjoy.

Was wondering when you'd get around to posting this one. Have logged MANY miles in those things. Each of the bubble-wrapped pieces is for a "matching unit," which is the large cylindrical base and spring that mounts to the outside of the body (usually the rear) of the vehicle and onto which the long whip antenna would be threaded/screwed. The matching unit is a compensator that enables radios to send and receive on a wide range of frequencies using one fixed-length antenna. They're not much use outside of military functions but were in use from 60s-90s. You may be able to trade them off to groups who restore military vehicles - or have fun upcycling them to something different. Most came with the back seats under the floor as did yours. As there are no back doors, this one is a two-seater (but with hard shell front doors...). You could easily install a 4-seater soft top and doors and replace the rotted seats so you could torture passengers - they're not comfortable. You would need to find a LOT of hardware to convert it to a 2-seater hardtop (maybe Pomeroy PD still has the pieces lying around?), 4-seater hardtop or even the 5-door hatchback - good luck with that. Ply a mechanic at your local National Guard armory wtih coffee and donuts. They'll be a wealth of information for the lesser-known issues associated with that generation of vehicle (e.g., floppy fan belts, fiberglass pieces, tire maintenance (LOADS of fun there), etc. Unique pieces (tires!) can get expensive. Major downer is that they're NOT fuel efficient and diesel, sooooo... On the other hand - and as you have discovered - it has superior traction and offroad capabilities - your friend's jeep is no longer top dog. Good luck and thanks for posting.

You have one of the best off-road vehicles made as long as you learn how to operate it. Great thing about military equipment, EVERYTHING has manuals covering from an operator's level to what is known as "back shop" complete tear down and rebuild. These manuals should be easy to acquire from any military surplus facility. The doors you have mimic an up-armor version which form to a hard top. If you find a set of soft side doors to match your soft top you will get a better seal (not complete seal) around the door. Little interesting fact; the little upward slope, or notch, in the body in front of the rear wheels is to allow clearance for climbing a 24" vertical wall. You are correct in your assumptions of the seating configurations and the anti mounts. Although you were placing the anti mounts upside down. The hoops would be on the underside to guard cables. Mind you, the anti that would be used are powerful enough to throw you on your ass if you would grab them while transmitting. Have fun and enjoy your military grade off-road truck. By the way, remembering correctly from my days in the U.S.A. Corps of Engineers, it is also very capable as a hauler with a 1 1/4 ton load capacity.

Looks like you got a sweet deal on that Hummer. As a retired Army guy I had lots of fun driving those all over the world. They will take you plenty of remote places. The bubble wrapped brackets you found in the back are Antenna mounts and would have been located on the back quarter panels on either side of the tail gate. The large shelf in between the driver and passenger seats is where your comm gear would go. Definitely service the hub gears and let the glow plugs cycle before starting. Don't expect to stay dry or warm in your current configuration, you won't. All the lift / tie down points on the vehicle are truly designed for that purpose. It doesn't look like Pvt Snuffy has poked holes in the floor pans to assist with draining while at the wash rack which is good. Enjoy and put it through the paces.

Most troop carriers had the back seats installed like yours were, to maintain a full bed. The pieces wrapped in bubble wrap are antenna mounts, usually for the singcars radio (one or two), and sometimes for a secure phone antenna (MSRT -mobile subscriber radio telephone - style). Those would mount to rear of truck, on either side of the tailgate.

Hello Matt; This video brought back so many memories of when I went into the army as a m 60 tank mechanic, then change my mos to a wheeled vehicle mechanic when the abrams tank came out. loved the video on the 2 1/2 ton truck also. but on the humvee I remember when our unit got the first ones. they would get stuck in the slightest mud. it was the bad design of the tires. didnt take long for them to get different tires lol. The most fun I had was when I was I was on the M80 recovery crew. pulling out stuck or broke down tanks , heavy work but fun. Thats when I was in Germany for 4 years. One thing to do during an oil change is smell the oil and make sure there's no diesel smell. The mechanical lift pumps on the front passenger side of the engine have a bladder in them that separates the crankcase oil from the diesel. It degrades over time and will pump diesel into the crank. That ain't good :P

Those 1/4 turn fasteners for the top have been around for over a hundred years as Henry Ford used them on the Model Ts for the same purpose . They're called Murphy fasteners and are still used on Amish buggies for the side and rear curtains .

Power or lack there of is a relative thing. Under powered? Hardly, the thing will go just about anywhere off road and if it won’t, lack of engine power will not be the cause. The problem is we are accustomed to modern 4x4s that have plenty of highway power. Two different vehicles as those modern 4x4s won’t get to half the places the your hummer will. Look at the pre 80’s Land Rovers and Land Cruisers, slow, underpowered, unrefined, rough ride and noisy until you turn off the bitumen. Then they suddenly became strong, reliable, tough go anywhere vehicles that were heaps of fun. If you bought your hummer for highway cruising, you bought the wrong car. These come with either a two person or a four conversion. When I was in the National Guard all the Humvees came with the two or for passenger version. The one that our section was assigned to was a two persons but converted to a four passenger one with soft side canvas top and doors. I was the assigned driver for the S-4 section. The metal flat bracket inside is for the two way military radio receiver.

In extreme conditions, apply some brakes while applying throttle to get the Torsen differentials to bias, transferring power to the wheel with more traction. It will slip up if traction imbalance is too much, but they differentiate very well. Enjoy your humvee!

We drove those things into the dirt during the Gulf War. They worked fairly well at first, but after months driiving around in the desert with temps as high as 130 degrees outside, they had all the power of a go-cart at the end of our tour.

Yeah, that's one that was a 4man that was converted to a two man (with troop seats), the the antenna mount you found has the three bolt pattern go to the back of the truck above the tail light basically the same as the one on there, the dancing voltmeter is cause the voltage regulators on these like to shit themselves all the time. They'll usually run on a bad voltage regulator for awhile before they stop working on you

It's a factory 2 man. There's no holes on the back wheel wells for the seatbelts. All 2 man Humvees have the seats hidden like that.

It may be gutless by todays standards. In the mid 80’s when they were introduced to the military they replaced the Jeep. In comparison these were monsters. Great video, brings me back to the first time I drove one. 👍

they replaced the jeep mostly because the military wanted a vehicle that could ride on the same transports as the tanks - it's the only reason it's so wide. For practical use the Jeep was more than adequate for the job and in forests and such far superior

The antenna mounts were for the AT-1729, part of the VRC-49's. I helped developed the HMMV at 29 Palms,CA. back in the Mid 80's. We wore a bunch out, crashed a few. Lot better than the Mity Mites we had at the time. BTW- grill on top of engine deck is no step.

The two items in the bubble wrap are for mounting antennas used for the military radios. I use Shell Rotella T5 in my '04 Duramax. That engine now has 502,000 miles on it

some advice on these as this one looks in decent shape check the fluid in the portal boxes at each wheel. they make replacement covers that make servicing them cake, a locking diff in the front make a world of a difference off-roading in these, if the center diff has breathers make sure they are extended to the top of the hood so they dont get water in em when fording as some came with short ones or they already rotted off.

Interesting note on your grease fitting fix. The shop I worked at rarely had the "correct" threaded inserts and usually fixed them exactly how you just did. As far as I am concerned, that is just standard Humvee repair work right there. Also as many have already mentioned, the two unknown pieces were universal antenna/convoy light mounts. The nice thing about the canvas top is they are cheap and easy to repair compared to the plate top. The downside is they degrade quickly and are really never dry in wet weather.

Matt, I have worked on many of the GM 6.2/6.5 variants back in the day they are a pain an the azz boat anchor. Even turned up they are balless. I would convert it to a spin on fuel filter if you are going to keep it. Also priming that stock filter disconnect the spade off the fuel shut off solenoid when you crank it over to prime it will keep the injector pump from running dry or starting the engine while priming. Those Stanodyne pumps can be a bitch to reprime when the are full of air. Those engines require the glow plugs to work all the time, even here in Florida hot as it is, and don't use cheapo glow plugs if you replace them { Champions are JUNK!!!} they tend to mushroom the tip of the plug when they crap out I have had to pull heads to get them out. If you are keeping it I would 4 door it and put the slant back hard top on it.

As others have mentioned, those have Torsen like differentials front and rear. These lock up more and more from side to side as more torque is applied to the input. If traction is low and there isn't enough resistance at the wheels to lock them up, you can use left foot braking combined with right foot throttle to lock up the differentials. Even with two diagonal tires completely in the air, if you apply the brakes enough and apply the throttle enough you can lock up the differentials completely and get power to the two tires that aren't in the air. One trick to greatly improve the differential input torque is to put the transfer case into low range when off roading. In low range the differentials lock up easily with left foot braking and this really helps with getting through rutted muddy trails.

Exactly ... great comment. With emphasis to be in 4 low for the funky diff lockers on Humvees ... but even on my old Toyota HiLux diesel the electric diff locks won't engage unless in 4 low ... engaged, she'll climb like a Billy Goat.

Torsen diffs- you can see it free-wheeling when the one was in the air. Give it a bit of brake to help out- Torsen is torque-bias multiplying, if a wheel is in the air there is zero resistance, so it won't have anything to multiply against if that makes sense. A little brake will send power back over to the other wheel.

Matt, at 26:20 in the video I see the light switch is off. Make sure you leave the top lever in the first notch to the right or you will not have any brake lights! (You need to lift the bottom right lever to unlock the top lever.) Also, make sure the left liwer lever is in the off position when parked or it will kill your batteries. Or install a battery cutoff switch. And the military uses non commercial components so you can't use them on normal personal vehicles.

Nice Humvee, would love to have it at that price. The two metal objects you found are for the two external antenna's and yes, the back seats come standard, making the Humvee interchangeable from 2 to 4 seats pretty easy. All Military equipment is made by lowest bidder, changes periodically over the years.6.2 is a good motor, you can trust me on that. You can get more power out of that motor, just need to find the right mechanic. HOOAH!!!

I ran those engines for years in several different trucks back in the late 80s and early 90s . The easiest way to get more power out of one is to advance the timing on the injection pump. There is a mark on the pump and one on the cast housing. Advance the pump to the with of a Nicole. You will be surprised by the extra power you will have and it never seemed to hurt anything. I drove them for years that way.

I was in the US Army for 16 years and I believe your frustration with some of the nuisance parts and location of the HMMWV. They do great off road when it is built light, but they drive like a slug if it is up armored. It is never a pleasant drive on the highway with its annoying steering play, stiff suspension and road noise but as an off road vehicle, they are magnificent! You can have the engine tuned and add a better turbo to have more throttle response and a bottom skid plate to protect its belly and that would be a great off road vehicle. If I had the space, I would definitely buy one...

The Humvee is a beast, all come with the rear back rest when used in the 2 man mode, the green things are antenna holders. BE CAREFUL, the brakes stop the axle shafts and no the wheels. You can twist off the shaft in front by having the wheel spinning and slam on brakes.

Been a little while since I drove one, but I think the transfer case has H, HL and LL settings. The H is for most general use, but the HL and LL both lock the differential so you won't have opposing wheels spinning. As you said, probably one of the most off-road capable vehicles made.

Those brackets wrapped in bubble wrap are antenna mounts. You could get the air intake snorkel and exhaust extension like what's on the USMC version HMMWV

one thing to remember on all gm diesels especially with 6.2,6.5 turbo detroits there built for fuel economy and because they were the cheapest thing the military could get both th cucv(squarebodys) and humvees you will need to add some straight pipe where the muffler fell off (also be very cautious of the pipes going to the airbox if there cracked you will hydrolock the engine cleetus mcfarland found that out the hard way (all your breathers go to the box to make sure there in good shape too)

The Hummer I believe has factory fitted Torsen diffs on both axles and, being a permanent 4x4, possibly one at the central diff. The Torsens though supposedly fully automatic have their quirks and it takes some driver skill to make them fully deliver. The Torsens also place a limitation on the max size wheel one can fit, which if exceeded, leads to their almost immediate catastrophic failure. Something to watch here.

The nutserts in the windshield frame always fall out and the channel bar that goes over the door is always loose haha. They are super easy to fix though. The model number of the truck will tell you wether it was a 2 door or 4 door model but all the extra pieces are the seat pans and seat backs. You would just have to get doors and take off the hell hole covers.

I’ve had a couple of those from GovPlanet. Lots of fun but almost no creature comforts. At least the heaters really put out some hot air. Be ready for a noisy, drafty ride. At least you got hard doors. It’s probably been mentioned but look up a fairly rare spontaneous combustion issue. I always disconnected the batteries when it was in the barn. Enjoy all the thumbs up you’ll get driving it. Btw gentle pressure on the brakes will lock your diffs if you get too off camber.

Per The Book, to go 4-seater, you have to delete the stake bed sides and install another headache bar aft of them. The vehicles were designed to go "flat" level with top of the windshield mount, so, everything comes loose and stows in the back. Those seat recesses were notorious for holding all kinds of "contraband."

36:30 One thing I remember about riding jeep trails with my HUMMER is they are not wide enough. 38:30 with that open exhaust pipe backing up could plug the pipe. I don't know how the exhaust was run on the HUMVEEs but the civilian HUMMER had the exhaust loop up over the rear axle inside the left rear wheelwell which created a seal to keep water out of the exhaust system when running through deep water. Downside of that was the exhaust pipe radiated a lot of heat into the wheelwell and that heated up the tire. Was only a problem on long runs at high speeds though like turnpike driving which the HUMMER is not designed to run over 60 MPH for extended periods.

The HUMMER (civilian version which GM renamed the H1) and the HUMVEE are pretty much the same animal and go down the same assembly line up until the dash and wiring harness goes in. Then they start to diverge and go their separate ways. That's what I saw when we toured the AMG assembly plant years ago. At the time the H2 didn't even exist except for the prototype which they showed off at the event (first Hummer Homecoming) and the H2 assembly plant was still under construction in 2000.

The civilian H2's are just Yukons with ugly body work, the H3 was never touched by AM Generals, and is a glorified GMC Canyon.

Matt, you have serviced and brought back to life an infinite number of diesel engines compared to me. But... next time you change a diesel fuel filter try this trick a friend taught me. Fill the cavity with ATF. It's good for the engine and injection pump (lubes it).
