This is my local stained glass supply shop…lovely to see the very knowledgeable John again….yep he’s right it’s definitely better to buy glass in person however I still think it would be a BIG advantage and easier for customers to have the option to shop with stained glass Reading online…and that’s coming from someone that lives in Reading.

Great to hear from John that Stained Glass sales are on the up over that last 3 years and makers are busier than ever and also tragic to hear Tatra is closed for flat glass production. Maybe a visit to English Antique Glass could revive the UK production for mouthblown glass? Thanks Derek for another excellent video and destination Reading .

Derek, that’s my favourite place to visit, it’s only twenty minutes away from me. John is such a decent helpful man, I can’t recommend anyone better, his knowledge is encyclopaedic. You can go in there with a cartoon and if you want he will find the perfect glass for you. The only problem is that it’s so difficult to tear yourself away from all that beautiful stuff! Thanks Derek! You do need to remember that the shop is closed on Mondays though.

When I started with stained glass I bought my glass with Foka Stained Glass in the Netherlands where I followed a stained glass course. Some 17 years ago I bought the glass stock of a artist leaving our island Curacao, he let me pay half of the total amount in monthly payments over 2 years, without even knowing me, that was very nice of him. Most of this glass is from Lamberts. But I try to use machined glass for my Tiffany glass art because it lowers the material cost of these items, unfortunately this is no longer sold on the island😭, so now I have to import it myself and as Mr. London says it is harder to choose from the computer than when having the glass in front of you.

This is also my local stained glass shop. John is an extremely helpful guy, he has a lot of time for this customers. As a newbie, I also love the inspiration the downstairs galley brings. It’s another treasure trove! Highly recommend a visit!

I'm so lucky that I only live 30 minutes from Reading. The first time I went into the store I was overwhelmed but everyone there was so friendly and helpful made it much easier!

We don't really have anything of this scale in my area, even though we're a major metropolitan area in the American Midwest. 30 years ago we had 2-3 times as many glass shops as we do now, but there just wasn't enough demand to keep them operating. A friend owns one shop but if it weren't for teaching classes and converting most of the downstairs space into a little wine cafe and turning the former class area upstairs into a B&B, she'd have gone under long ago. My wife and I basically quit making stained glass because after a certain point you run out of places to put it in your own home, and people aren't exactly clamoring to commission new pieces with today's fashions in home style and decorating. I still do glass painting on a small scale, mostly on window glass though. Hopefully one day the pendulum will swing back and stained glass will be in demand again. This is a fantastic video, thanks for sharing!

What are the odds??? Maybe the Universe just needs a poke in the ribs sometimes to get it moving...

I really enjoyed this video, as I do all of your videos. Would you consider creating a video about glass kilns for new artists? I can't find much guidance on the type of kiln to buy for glass painters, and the distinction between kilns for fusing, painting, and ceramics. It's a major purchase so a solid understanding would be very useful. Thank you for sharing!

So here's a potential video idea, how does a beginner know if the glass is high quality or just high priced? If I had such a lovely gentleman near me I'd just learn from him. What are the different types of glass, bullseye, cathedral, van gogh etc and are there any types to avoid painting on? I see a lot of videos about using window glass to practice cutting on, but no success finding what to look for in a good quality glass. With prices ranging from $ to $$$$ and some marked "hobby" I want to know what I'm buying, and hopefully someday selling.

Great idea! I’m based in the UK so my range of glass types might not be the same as yours. Basically if you want to paint on glass then use transparent coloured glass rather than opal glass - it’s harder to paint on as you can’t see through it. Opal glass is sometimes not quite as good quality as transparent, and glass with a texture is often made cheaply and mass produced in a limited number of colours. It all depends on what you want to use the coloured glass for…🙂
