Someone else mentioned, this does not incorporate how much Whole Foods pays their workers vs. how much the 99 cents store does. The 99 cents store probably pays low wages and *part* (not all) is the reason for the lower prices. That said, still love this video!

Loved this video. Such a great way to think about the varying cost of groceries and that healthy doesn't always have to be expensive.

Why am I just seeing this video. 😭 I visited the 99cent store this weekend and my mind was blown at the organic and plant based options they provided. From Jackfruit to whole grain rice! Love it. I spent $100 and I know That would’ve been 150-160 at my local organic store! We need a 2024 99cents store comparison

So people who say being vegan is only for high income families, need to do all their grocery shopping at the 99c store ?

WOW! You guys are lucky - a .99 store!!!! I am in Southern IN and we have a dollar store (that is now 1.25) and it is junk - all junk - I just went there and only found dried fruit and some detox tea. Everything else was processed heavily, no produce, no full size products (I would have purchased, but it was literally 1/4 of the size). Love this video - hope more see it!!

It's the same way in TN. No fresh food what so ever. Most don't even have a frozen food section.

Same where I live in NY. If you have a 99 cent store like this, why is it even a question whether or not to shop there? Literally I am so jealous.

My question is how much does whole foods pay its workers vs the dollar store? Is the cheaper store paying their employees a living wage? Do they have healthcare? The price of items you see on the shelves is not just for the item

Hey! So all of the amounts at these different discount stores can be smaller in size. I just started watching the video but do watch out for the weight/amount prices. Sometimes you can get more for a better price at the non-discount stores.

What blew my mind the other day is that I heard this organic farmer on the radio complaining that supermarkets sell their organic products for double the price of conventional, whereas overall, their way of farming is about 10-20% more expensive than conventional farming.

I’m curious, did you compare the price of the sized item that each store offered, or did you scale prices based on any size differences? I’ve noticed that at 99c type stores the items may be cheaper and the same brand, but are much smaller. I’ve always wondered if the cheaper/smaller option was comparable to an average sized item or even a bulk item. Just a thought.

Watching in 2024 I was wondering the same. There's been a lot of criticism to 99c and dollar tree lately for selling smaller packages and potentially different versions of food (I would even look at the expiration date too) under the guise of being cheaper. These name brands have to be compromising something in order to get their profits...Not saying Whole Foods is the solution either lol

Where Whole Foods shines for me is the high quality cat foods, the hard kombuchas, the specialty energy drinks, the frozen vegetables and the canned foods. Sometimes I get their produce on sale. They have deeeelicous heirloom tomatoes.

This was really interesting. And I love farmers markets despite them being more pricey, but it makes sense considering it isn’t conventional farming. Nothing is subsidized. you’re also feeding and supporting your neighbors and their families. 😊

I usually look at the sale ads for my more traditional grocery store and then I get some of the other stuff at the 99 cent store. I can always find my kids lunchables there for 2 for 99 cents as other stores sell them for 1.99

I live in South Dakota, and was just in Phoenix for two weeks visiting family. Whole Foods is NUTS. I eat organic as much as I can, and shop that way in South Dakota - Costco, Walmart, natural grocers, local health food stores, thrive market.. no place that I’ve ever been is as spendy as Whole Foods. It’s ridiculous.

Farmers markets are costly because your local labor is costly. Go to a market in South America and you’ll think you’re getting screaming deals.
