That's great advice. I'm hopefully going to buy my first bow this week end. I have just joined Meriden Archery Club and have been advised to head over to Merlin to get set up. Now all I need to do is work out what I want. Keep posting the vids, they've been really helpful. Cheers, matt

Hi Jim, I am a novice to trad archery and I very much enjoy your videos and the good advice / commentary, such as done on this one. Please keep them coming. I am envious of the arrow storage rack behind you. It is hard to determine how it was constructed by looking over your shoulder. Perhaps one day you would consider sharing that with your You Tube followers? Cheers.

can I add one more thing, from experience, you can go into the shop thinking they know and find that you've gotten a lot of wrong advice. I went to a large shop, fortunately I knew what I wanted but didn't understand arrows properly and trusted them to help me. I spent about 100 bucks getting a half dozen arrows set up to find that the spine weight should have been one set lower. The guys there were more interested in selling compounds more than traditional and the guys there that did shoot traditional got their supplies some where else. Over the past year I've been able to tune the bow to shoot these arrow well enough but the slightest error in my release and they wobble notably. So my point would be to also take along someone you trust to help you. Thank you for your vids, keep them coming I've been learning a lot from them.

Just what i was looking for. Information to help me choose a bow, put in nice simple terms, that even a newbie like me can understand and apply to my search for a first bow. Thankyou so much. Have joined Tumblr soi can check out your blog too. Thanks again.

I bought my first bow, which was off of eBay. It's a Chinese 50lb hunting style bow. I did struggle with it being overbowed, but I knew that before I bought it. I bought some spare 30lb limbs for it and had great fun. I can now shoot the 50lb version without too much trouble and am more accurate. I'm not into clubs, target shooting, etc. I just go out with a friend to a private indoor 18m range that we have access to and have some fun. ;)

Not really, from a hunter point of view here in EU where bow hunting is legal the minimum legal draw weight is 45# If I recall correctly only one country has the minimum allowed of 40# that's because the broadheads they accept have quite a large cutting diameter and low poundage bows will struggle to penetrate to ensure a fast and ethical kill But from a target archer point a view a heavy poundage bow is not practical in the field where flinging 300 arrows a day are the norm

One thing I hate when I started to practice archery is that in my club really recommended me/forced me to buy an initiation bow without any other option, when I was so sure about what type of bow and model I wanted. Now I practiced for over 3 months and I really need to change my bow because I need a good one. My advise is: if you can with the pounds, and you really o one bow, buy it. Don't start with initiation arrows and a simple young kit, if you want a longbow and wood arrows, just go for it. I think I wasted a lot of material for listening the recommendation and not my instincts.

I got a bow and arrow set for Christmas one year, but it was one of those metal bows. I was told they don't make traditional bows any longer, so I happily accepted the gift...only the torque was too much. I couldn't wield it. It wasn't until recently that I found the bow again, but this time it seemed as if the bow's metal strand has loosened up... Sorry for rambling, but I wished my parents had looked up archery before buying me the gift. Not that I'm complaining. It's one SWEET bow! I would go to the sports +outdoor store in my town, but I don't think they'll even notice I'm there because I'm a female. =(

Good advice Jim. I've had the same questions and I've started to recommend bows like the Samick Sage takedown recurve. It's a very cheap starter and you can upgrade the limbs at 5lb increments. :)

Honestly, any bow 52" and below should be shot with a thumb draw because of the sharp angle of the string. Besides, I *believe* the thumb draw is more efficient anyways, less involved fingers to muck up your release...

I recently decided to to learn archery. My girlfriend said she would like to try it too. So, off we went to the only place I knew that sold bows. We went to basspro. That was a big mistake. I had to find the only guy that knew anything about archery. I told him I didn't know anything about archery and I wanted help getting started. He pointed to the compound bows. I told him I didn't want a compound. And glanced at the takedown bows. At that time I didn't know what a takedown bow was. He looked at me and asked, if I wanted a takedown bow? I said I don't know. He offered no explanation of one. He did point me to some traditional bows. I asked, if he had one I could shoot. Nope. So, I walked away not knowing about bows and not knowing anything about archery. I ended up doing a google search and found an online store that had decent reviews for service. I called him and we talked a bit. I learned more about take down bows. I learned a little bit in getting started. I purchased 2 bows and some arrows and now await their arrival. I learned later that there was an archery shop 30 minutes from where I live, but they carry only compound bows. The second closest store is 1.5 hours from me and their website doesn't show recurve. And apparently crossbows are very popular right now.

I would personally recommend a Samick Sage in the 25-35 pound range with a Fast Flight string for a beginner. Yes, it's a cheap bow, but through the thousands of times I've shot mine, there has been no problems.. And that includes accidentally dry-firing the bow a few times. I got mine with 50 pounds to start out with, and although I plan to hunt with it, I do end up sore after prolonged shooting, so I recommend the lighter limbs. plus the limbs can be exchanged for 72 US dollars :)

Would you assume, a 45 pound bow is to much for me? It would be my second bow, but my first one is to small for me which is why I haven't shot for a year or so. I'm 16 years old and fairly athletic since I do karate several times a week for many years now and also work out very often. Thanks for any answers.

I would say MOST people Don`t have a clue about anything to do with Bows and arrows when they start ? they see a film perhaps of Robin Hood or see a friend that has one, then go from there ? I`ve experienced Hundreds and hundreds of people that come to do some archery and NEVER have I seen anyone hurt or pull muscles, You may have an Archery shop around you ? But I`ve found that most people have Never seen or have gone to one, ok , then It`s " I want one " Can you get me one ?? then you ask what type would you like ?? I DON`T KNOW !! Can I get one like yours ? Recurve ? What`s a recurve ? I just want one of those long round ones like yours ?? Then while you go and get one for him/her they get interested while waiting for thiers to come Via the Internet, Here in the UK , I personally have only Ever seen x 1 Archery Shop EVER and that was by fluke !! it seems only after the Interest has started does one find out more like = is there an Archery Place around where I live ? sometimes when driving along Main roads you may see some Archery going on with the Big Stand up Targets sitting around x 10 feet in front of them ( figure of speach ) and you have to ask yourself, what`s the point at that distance ? of course you and I know why !! BUT THEY DON`T ! I would say x 99% of all those that turn up to have a go, Usually a package lot that do something else along with Archery, Never get into Archery, or find out more about it. I would say to any Newbie, just get a 28lb - 35lb Bow, doesn`t matter what it is and enjoy what you have and if after x 6 months you want another , come and see me to talk about all the options, > or direct them to U-Tube to see Videos.

I am about to purchase my first bow, other than flea market purchases, I would like your opinion about Black Widow bows, and how important the size of the sight window is in a 54" recurve.

You may not be able to help on here, but I'm hoping you can. I've been shooting guns for a long time & am wanting to learn archery. Not for hunting, but hobby really. I am female & there isn't much of anywhere where I live to try out bows. I initially wanted a recurve, but a lot of opinions have said compound is the way to go. I really just want to know your opinion. I'm am about 5"4' & 26yrs old, pretty strong & willing to learn. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Hi Tamara Sumner if you're looking in to get in to the sport of archery, id always start off shooting a recurve or longbow, it will give you a better understanding of how archery works and ultimately be a much more rewarding experience.. compounds are a bit of a different animal altogether really and you tend to spend more time tuning them than shooting them... well thats my experience anyway ;) But the most important thing is to just have fun Take care, and let me know how you get on...

What would be a good poundage for a a 20 year old male beginner? Also, does draw length affect the bow length I must have b/c my draw length is around 27.5 inches?

I have recently started doing archery, but there are no archery shops near me. I have found one set online that contains everything that I would need ( www.merlinarchery.co.uk/first-shot-archery-kit-teenage-boy-handed.html ), but I can't find any information on bow size or draw weight etc. , so I was wondering if anybody could either provide me with information on this, or suggest an alternative. Thanks in advance.
