Advise for beginners in archery. Don't "test out" your new bow that isn't sighted in in your flat with a small target. You might miss and hit a metal cupboard which you then have to cut open in order to get the arrow out which is now effectively blocking a door. Totally didn't happen to me. Just wanted to give a good basic advise.

probably shouldn't be using your bow in your flat at all, whether its sighted in or not.... lmao

Shot my first bow at 10. Also fired a shotgun the same day. The bow felt better. It felt like an extension of my body, like my breath moving as a projectile through the air towards my target. The shotgun felt like a force I had to fight against. I still remember that. I still remember the bruise across my chest. I'm 32 now. I've played off and on with bows since then. Every time I pick one up it feels amazing. Don't let that interest go away. In my twenties I had nowhere to shoot except vacant lots near my apartments. Now I have a house with a yard that's sufficient for regular target shooting. Nothing relaxes me more than drawing back that string

Though I’m starting my bow experience with a traditional long bow, I recognize there is a great advantage to take down recurve for beginners. One thing you missed is it’s cheap to get replacement limbs, so you can work up in weight, or use one for competing, and one for hunting, for example, and not drop a ton of money.

@jimf1964
@jimf1964 Ай бұрын
@@claireoost9267 There are some recurves out there that are cheap, and supposed to be fairly good. You can get different limbs as you go up in strength and skill, which is a good thing. Only problem with that idea is the arrows need to be tuned to each bow for best accuracy. Since I wrote my comment last year, I’ve learned a lot, and it’s definitely a sport you can go down the proverbial rabbit hole. If you want to get started, and not get too frustrated (and if you can afford it) go to an archery store or hunting store with archery, and get set up with something about your strength and arrows that are good for it. Or do some research about tuning arrows and make a good guess. The problem is that arrows for a 20lb bow won’t work well with a 40lb, and if you feel comfortable with. 20lb bow at first, you’ll pretty quickly be able to shoot a 40.. Check out some videos from different people, then make a guess. Finding a club, or someone more experienced, would make the process way more enjoyable too.

I am tired of putting it off, but it is a big expense & I'm a little scared of making a stupid mistake. There is one gentleman at the store who is fairly helpful, so hopefully I can talk to him about it for a bit. I'm not ordering my bow online so the choices at the store are limited, But buying from a store does have its benefits, they help you set it up the first time etc.. & the return policies are a bit better.

As someone largely inspired by Renaissance faires and the Fate series (which ironically has very few “true” archers, lol), I’m a sucker for more traditional bow designs. While I’ll most likely be stuck with just shooting targets, I like the practicality of archery for hunting and find an appeal in having a hobby that can be used for both survival and sport (depending on the situation of course).

I kind of got into Archery in boyscouts as a kid. They gave us cheap little fiberglass bows and I guess I was pretty good at it, being only 9 years old. I want to revisit Archery now, but just turning 16 and just getting a job, I think I can try to fit it in with my other couple hobbies.

@Cult of DECC Right. But we could choose to make sure theres armed guards in every pre- school. But thats besides the point. What we really need to do is make crime illegal. Making things illegal solves everything
@bobbyrayvictory6905
@bobbyrayvictory6905 4 жыл бұрын
@Cult of DECC Have you ever bought a firearm in the US? The background check is such a pain in the arse I prefer buying my guns from private sellers and not from stores that issue background checks. The last time I bought a shotgun from a sporting goods store like dunhams it took me almost an hour to get through the process. Screw that. I'll go to my local drug dealer and be done with the purchase in five minutes. Four of thise minites being treated to a joint. There are already severe regulations and frankly its to the point that if they continue we'll be looming like a European country and frankly we arent having that. The problem isnt that we have to many firearms in circulation. All of our mass shootings are performed by people with pre diagnosed mental health issues. Not by standard law abiding citizens. Mass shootings dont count for even 5 percent of our gun crimes. The majority are gang related with the second majority being crimes of passion in arguments. With all that said. Melee weapons and knives kill more people than firearms and firearms are used defensively yo save about a million lives a year. America is already hyper regulated as far as we can be with our constitution (regulated more than what our constitution allows even). Guns arent the problem. As I said. Make crime illegal and maybe people wont murder. If its already illegal to kill people how are preventing law abiding citizens from defending themselves going to help anyone? As ive also said. Its much easier to buy a gun of the streets than from the government controlled system. As it is in every country around the world.

I got the Diamond SB-1 as my first bow. $400. Set at 70lb and 29" draw. Took a few days of tinkering around on the archery calculators, but I have gotten my arrow selection to 405 grains and I am getting 288fps and 74ftlbs of KE. I am very happy with it. After all is said and done, I got into archery for $500. I can hunt and precision shoot with the SB-1. The other perk with SB-1 is that it is adjustable by the shooter and does not require a bow tech. I did all my set up and took it in to my bass pro to have him give it the once over. He installed a peep sight and adjusted my arrow rest by about a quarter centimeter. and then boom I was pulling consistent 10s.

Very nice vid. Can You make a specific video about longbows? My first bow will be the "Compact Folding Survival Bow" from Primal Gear Unlimited. Please check it out, it is a interesting super durable long bow. And it can be folded! Is 50LB feasable for a beginner (masculin, fresh adult)?
@NUSensei
@NUSensei 7 жыл бұрын
I'm not fond of these survival bows. They seem more gimmicky than useful, and are terrible bows to learn with. 50# is simply way too high and most people who get one for the concept are unable to use it.
@TheGreenSmooth
@TheGreenSmooth 7 жыл бұрын
Okay, thank you for your quick answer. I agree that the name itself could misdirect to something gimmical. It would be very nice if you check out the specific model I mentioned above. It is just a durable longbow and seems to be quite good and acurate. It would be cool to see your opinion in depth about this interesting specific model. maybe the company Primal Gear Unlimited gives you a sample if you ask for a test. I guess then I will go for the 40# version, I hope it is not too weak.

NUSensei when I took archery in college, we learned on 40 - 60 lb wooden longbows. they were well maintained and had been in use since the 1960's this was in the 80's. Saying longbows aren't mainstream may be true in competition, but for someone getting into archery for reenactment unless you are playing a Non-European archer you will need to know how to use a longbow. The learning curve isn't much different from a recurve IMO.

Trad bows are mentioned but yes, I also think this option - inlcuding longbows - is a bit underrepresented. My reason for archery is that I'd like to get good at something people have been doing for thousands of years. I can shoot the classic general purpose bow twice a week at the club and wanted to have _something_ nicer. A bow that I not only like to shoot but also *have* and had my choices boiled down to three bows, one out of stock (and patience was wearing thin :) - so out of the other two I picked the one I see people on KZbin having a lot of fun with. The longbow, which was also the cheapest of all three.
