I bought my horse from a breeder; he was a 10 month old colt, barely halter broke, but he did load in the trailer just fine. He was curious about it, and just hopped in. I owned him for 33 years (34 when he passed away). I know that wasn't the best way to buy a horse, but it all worked out just fine. I let him be a horse while he was a youngster, but did do a lot of groundwork with him. He was broke to drive at the age of 3, ridden at 5, started jumping at 6. Last ride for him was at 32 years of age. He still looked great as an old horse, just a little bit of grey hair, kept weight on well. He passed 10 years ago, and I still miss him.
@janetgriffiths72007 жыл бұрын
His last 2 years were spent in retirement, just had the necessary vet work and farrier work done. He wasn't lame or anything. I felt he had earned it for being a fantastic companion all those years. He passed naturally from old age, a week after his latest vet exam.

we bought a stallion from an auction for next to nothing but my fiance and I decided no matter what we were going to keep him for the rest of his life and we would work through any issues he had. He is a great horse but it's a commitment already we had to get him gelded get his shots and new tack and his feet done and then there is the time. we work with him daily it's the same commitment that a person would give if they adopted a child

A little story on how my cousin DID NOT take my advice. My cousin is very spoiled and makes her dad get her anything she wants. I got her really into horses so she asked her dad for one, when she didn't even know anything about riding them. There was a jump set up while she was riding her new horse (I can't even believe her dad got her one) and the jump was about 2 ft. She kept saying "I can do it! I know more about riding that you do and you know it!" Even though she's only toke lessons like three times. I warned her not to even try because this was her first jump and the stable she was boarding at probably wouldn't even let her, and of corse she didn't listen. She moved into a walk and didn't even know how to trot so she kicked and hit her horse (with a riding bat) at the same time not gently, the horse galloped for that jump and my cousin flew off right when they were about to land. Also the horse had a small scrap from something but nobody found out why. DO NOT BUY A HORSE IF YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT HORSES OR RIDING!! True story. Not even exaggerating my uncle doesn't know anything and just gets her what she wants.

A story about our second auction horse. It was a large Amish auction, anyone could sell anything there. I watched the only four full sized horses all day... the livestock was the last thing they sold, so from 7 am till 5 or 6 in the evening, I watched those horses, spent the entire day walking over, talking to them, etc. The only one that was friendly and calm was the boniest one of the bunch. He was a scrawny, tall, beat to hell (by other horses) bay gelding with a short mane and a long long tail. They were all already saddled (but had loose cinches), so you couldn't tell anything about their backs or sides. I lifted the skirts of the saddle - he had scabby spots and scars all over him. He picked up his feet for us though, and he began watching for us (my daughter and I) when we started walking his way through the crowd. I did ask all the right questions, and I took the answers and told myself his 'little problem with this or that' was actually probably bigger than we were told. I bought him fully expecting the other shoe to drop. Got him home, he was badly beat up, but gentle and looking to us to clean him up. We carefully brushed him out, cleaned the infected wounds, started feeding him up. He's now massive and handsome. His problems (Spooking on the trail and lazy) are actually more than let on, but I expected it. His being lazy is he wants to buck a little to try to get out of being ridden and he only has a three speed transmission: Walk, trot, lazy lope (But that's okay, we're not needing to go anywhere in a huge hurry around here). His 'a little spooky' on the trail is low confidence away from other horses and looking for boogers in the bushes. He gets anxious away from home. We're getting him past that, but nothing he's done so far has surprised me. He's a good horse, just has a few bad habits someone has let him get away with in the past. So we wear him out when he acts like a turd under saddle. Glad we brought him home, he's like the dog pound dog - he knows he's taken care of here. Even dirty and battered, slat-ribbed, he had a gentle nobility about him, something we couldn't quite define. The name 'Sarge' stuck immediately.

There was a horse on our farm, which people avoided to ride. 'He is dangerous' they would say, I rode him out and sure enough he did buck and nap a few times, but after the 3rd day I got to know him more and he became a beautiful horse to ride. I respected him and he did the same to me, I will never forget him refusing to move, and whinnying for no reason. I got off, his foot was raised and he had a rock jammed in his hoof. did he buck or bolt. no. most people would have whipped him to move.

@honeyhearts27 : If a horse can eat teeth are not that important, unless they are cracked, broken and falling out, and that is the case they probably will not be eating. Teeth are cosmetic like color, mane length or tail fullness, does not really impact how the good or bad the horse will be. No horse likes metal in his mouth and it hurts his teeth, so most people want to blame teeth for them having hard hands on the bit and making the teeth hurt.

So true! I bought a horse last year. I wanted her for a horse I could learn with. When I went and seen her I knew I was going to buy her right away because I knew I could give her a better life then what she was living. She was skin and bones, they had no feed for her on their property. She had no water in her trough. Her feet hadn't been touched in quite a while and they had drugged her. I could tell right away. They just wanted money and could care less who ended up with her. I quickly loaded her up, gave them their stupid money and brought her home where she will live for the rest of her life being loved and fed and just taken care of properly. She has turned out to be one of the sweetest horses I've ever worked with and you can tell she just happy to be in a good place.

Rick,Right Again Thank You! Lots of intelligent horses go "Crazy",With being handled by the wrong person. Pretty well brought home to me by a grey games mare,who prefered Men,I'm a Woman.&I worked this out,luckily,within a weekend. Got her a great home,&Got an Exmoor gelding,who'd got taken off his dam,off the moor,branded old way(35yrs ago!)&Then herded onto a wagon,(At this point people,imagine the pain+fear!!) sold at auction. Told me,when he'd passed through a few homes,that he's too Wild,Crazy&Going to the knackers. Bless his Kind,Gentle Soul,My almost constant Companion for 5happy yrs, Until,one day,got home,No Whicker of"Where the Bloody heck is my hay?' I'd been at work,and thought he was sick,but ran to the paddock,He was Gone!!I'd not noticed the flat cart was gone too,pfft!! Mother had sold him,tack,flatcart &Harness,to a complete stranger. * The Utter Shock&Betrayal,What Upset me more,It'd taken 3hours to catch him😲😖. Whereas, he'd yell,for me,No bother to go in&put a halter on. Poor lad,😟. He had become,my friend,Trusted,handled properly Trustworthy. Never saw him again,so I'm pretty certain,If it took 3Hours to catch him,the Idiot who bought him must have gone in,With an Attitude,Mob handed. Don't bear thinking about,how things went from there... Wrong approach,wrong pony.😞😟 Missing him still,over 30yrs later. Mother "borrowed," the cash. Told her to keep it... Stupid People,,,Bad Outcome. Sorry,Sentimental old fool that I am. Andréa. Treated like an Idiot by Horsey set, Unless they had a Problem,(100%Always homemade!) Then,they'd Need me. No Bad Horses,Only Stupid People.

Great instruction in this video Rick! I have seen too many idiot "star riders" and "star trainers" complaining that they bought a horse, without seeing it first in person(!!!!), then they "were forced to sell" the horse as the horse had problems (meaning they can't control the horse and/or don't want to take time to train it properly). The poor horse gets shipped from owner to owner, never gets the love, respect, and training it deserves, and these idiots are responsible for ruining these horses. Horses endure some of the worst human treatment -- including the flippant way that some people will go about buying a horse, without even seeing it first, like it is a car -- though even these idiots will go to look at a car and/or drive it in person before buying it.

I totally agree. We have two from a sale barn. One is a filly quarter horse, she is blind in her left eye and we aren’t sure what even happened to her. I’ve had several people tell me they wouldn’t even pay to feed her, or take her right back to the sale barn and get rid of her. But she is the sweetest horse i’ve ever seen. She may never be a good riding horse but she’s been through a lot in her short life. We have a paint mare too, from the same sale barn and she is such a good horse. She is trained to ride but not been treated right. They’re so much happier with us now. The best thing you can do is get a horse that needs some extra love and TLC.

@honeyhearts27 : like a lot of things there is some truth to that, bad falling out teeth will mean a horse can't eat, may be hard to keep weight on, may not live as long, may need special feed, but Buddy was kicked in his teeth as a baby and his front teeth are crooked, that is why the lady did not want him, said he could not show with crooked teeth. As you can tell it does not impact buddy in the least. :)

Something I like about you is how you manage to simultaneously make training a horse easier, but also harder. You show the best way to train a colt is to just let the mother train it, that you dont need a fancy bit or chains or a chin strap or spurs or blah blah blah, some rope tied in this way and that does it just fine and is much better for the horse, but at the same time letting people know there are no shortcuts, good things come with time, effort, and something so many people forget, whether in relationships or horses or just in general, understanding.

I worked at a auction barn where I live, which is south Texas, so this is prime Texas cattle country. But with prime cattle country comes prime horse country. And in my time at this auction I saw good meat cattle come through, but at the beginning of every sale they sent through the horses. And these poor horses looked neglected and ribby. Now I'm now horse expert by I know animals and I know these horses were pitiful looking. It was quite sad really but there were times I've seen this same paint mare come through that auction 4 times! How do I know? Because I scare along the right side of her neck. And every other month this horse came through that auction and some other aspiring horse trainer bought her and it wasn't until a couple months later that I stopped seeing her come through. I assumed she had gotten a good home but I heard some cowmen talking over by the chutes and they said that 'ol jimmy boy (the owners son-in-law and partner) had bought the mare the first time and kept sending her through and making profit off the poor saps that bought her. These auction horses sadly have never been good looking horses but they are just pawns for big cowmen. Now I was raised with a Texas heart, and I've learned that around these parts your elders are to be respected. These old fellers got thousands of acres of historical lands. Owned by the cowmen in the times of Indians and Anglos. But this is just pitiful horsemanship. So if you are looking to buy a horse from the auction you better be looking to hold onto that horse and care for it...otherwise you're playing right into their age old game of chess.
@TheRosa637 жыл бұрын
I had never been to auction, so a friend of mine who is more horse savvy then me decided to go to sugarcreek, to a hrse auction. I felt so bad for those horses I never returned and never will. two horses were nibbling the neck and one horse was super thin ( appy) and had a big hip sore on his one side. most of them were underweight and looked so tired. I just wish people would be better educated on horses.

We have an old ranch horse out of an auction in Houston Texas. He is everything you just described. I don't think he was ever actually abused. But, he was rode to death. He even has a saddle shape worn right into his hide. In his eyes, he is so tired. Going blind. Almost completely deaf. Vet says he suffers not from any starvation as such, but long term malnutrition. He just never took into his body what he needed to use in energy and minerals. His auction papers say he is 15 years old but teeth show he is at least early 20's maybe lot more. He deserved good rest after such long life of hard work. For him, hope it is checkmate. Gives me the creeps when I think of where his many brothers/sisters may have ended up that same day. I agree. Is actually pitiful way to end up. Shameful.

I have to say i had a horse that her bottom lip used to hang all the time especially when she was just standing around and she was never ever drugged. she was raised by my grandfather and handed down to me. she was very hard headed and like Rick has said many times, if a horse knows you don't know what your doing a horse will take advantage of that. But she never once tried to buck me off, rear up, you could stick a little kid on her and she would know and just walk around. you get someone on her that knows what they are doing she would respond. Rick I love your videos and I can see you know how to treat and read horses.

My sister bought a registered quarter horse colt at an auction. He was an awesome very brave horse. However, she did almost nothing for 6 years and then sold him at an auction because she couldn't handle him (she had him gelded.) Fortunately, a real horse trainer bought him, trained him in dressage and sold him for a huge profit and he was bought by a lady who just wanted a nice riding horse. He now has a happy life and gets along well with her other horse. He could have been bought by a kill buyer and she just didn't care about that at all. She just wanted to get rid of him. I have nothing to do with her because she uses spurs, harsh bits and whips and then blames the horses when she gets thrown off and hurt. Stupid woman.

I agree with alot of things you say especially about there is never a bad horse, I am not an experienced rider, but I do love horses, and have seen horses that were considered bad, but were actually quite opposite. Horses are so smart, and each have a unique personality. I think horses are amazing and complex as people are in so many ways, but animals tend to be misunderstood and this causes trouble. I do not know as much as many people when it comes to horses entirely, and I know that it takes years to learn all there is to know about any animal, let alone a horse, I am not perfect, but I do believe that all horses have potiental and there is no bad horse. I have seen some horses many people sad were bad or crazy, especially this one horse I got to ride, she was extremely sweet. She was a little nervious, lacked some in confidence, but she was sweet, people were scared of her, but me not being way less knowledgable then them, though I still could see she was a horse layed under a great heart. She was my favorite horse because she liked things a certian way, she was smart bold, if you were against her she would not respond well. However , she had the most heart and the most will to try, she always gave her best if you do the same for her. I think horses are one of the smartest animals there is but tend to over look it. I listen to your videos. I agree completely, I think horses are just amazing, even though I am not incrediably experienced with horses, I do have a little. I have always liked the more sensitive horses because they are so aware of what you do and how you treat them. Last summer I got to be around saddlebreds and they are one of the smartest horses I have ever been around, each one pays attention to you, how you treat them, how you respond to them, and they treat each person differently. They are smart and are always trying to understand, they are willing, they would much rather please then fight, but this does not mean they would never try to do opposite of that if the oppurtinity allows. I have ridden a few arabians, another breed I love, gentle, full of personality, they are extremely assertive to you, they tend to be careful, sometimes spooky, as the mare I rode, but if I was okay she would try! She was the kind of horse that needed your confidence and your assurance to feel okay and comfortable. I also rode a tb/cross who was also extremely smart , older yes, but always so aware of his surroundings, and full of life. Another quarter horse who when I was a kid, me and my sister rode him, he knew we were inexperienced, he took that too his advantage, but I never blamed him, I was just impressed because how smart he was to actually remember that we did not know! I know through life there are things that can be improved and life things to learn from, but the way horses think is something that will always inspire me.

I sent you an email about buying a horse and I asked about leasing. That was before I saw this video. Now I have your answer; thanks!

I agree 100% I see people who buy beautiful horses and they are ruined and sometimes they are save able sometimes they are not. But just because they are born pretty doesn't mean they are bad. They are like dogs they learn from people. My horse to me I did the number 1 bad thing. Fell in love with him opps. When I got him he was bad. I rode him on trail etc. all that but he was fixable. Now he amazing he so quiet and does whatever I ask him. A lot of it is from stuff I learned from you channel.

I actually just bought a horse today and I'm really glad when you said "Don't just think because someone else can ride the horse you can" or "Just because they can pick up the horses feet doesn't mean it will let you" because today when I saw the horse I was gonna buy, I picked up her feet and she did good, then the other person with me tried and that horse had no part of it. She snorted and slammed her hoof on the ground. Horses are smart animals and they my new one is pretty opinionated. LOL

Me and my mom are thinking about buying a horse less than a month I think it’s best that you learn the horses things so you learn them don’t let anybody tell you it is a lie might be don’t buy the horse just because how it looks you need the perfect horse for you don’t say oh it will bite me it won’t there really kind people say that it is to much work for them they are but when you get used to just read this get the right horse not buy them just because there pretty!

I always wanted a horse but after watching this it make me feel like I can't bc you can't trust anyone and I'm not gonna buying them for there looks I will buy one to be part of a family and have a friend that I can trust.I don't know everything about horses but I know some breeds and were they come from and there behavior and I'm only in my pree teen too. My school has a Equestrian Team but cost to much to lead one so I hope I'll get on when I'm older

Rick would you please do a video about Tanner and Buddy? I know Tanner is a mustang, would love to know what part of the country he's from. Would love to know what breed Buddy is. I know bloodlines aren't what matter. It's the horse that matters. I guess I'm one of the "stupid people" who want to know all about your guys. Tanner is so beautiful. I want a mustang and seeing Tanner makes me want one even more. I know I will be in for hard work but it will be worth it

that is what my aunt taught me, look at confirmation. to make sure tack fits properly. she did tell me my 6yr POA /Arabian did have the best confirmation she'd ever seen. she was to much horse for me. she was abused horribly & i was a new rider. i did not learn correctly with her at all. makes me very sad & angry now to know that i most likely did more harm then good. i could only do what my aunt taught me. after 2 years & a horrible "accident", with my aunts horse, she sent me away & never let me work with her horses again. she sold my Lacey & i don't know what happened to her or how her life ended up. i haven't ridden but a few times since. am hoping to have a horse again, but hard to do when land cost are raising & raising so much. i won't stable a horse. won't own one if i can't have land to be near them all the time.oh well. just may never happen. ha, old wound reopened.

Hey Rick, I've thousands of videos to go to catch up on your channel. BUT this video was so informative!! I subscribe to Sanctuarys that save horses from the "pipeline" and the condition these horses and in are just heartbreaking. But one Sanctuary was saying this guy goes around with his 10 "daughter" and asks to buy the horse from them because it's in a lot of 15 they bought and they find this often with the "father" wanting to buy this horse and his daughter is in love with it. They told him come to their Sanctuary and fill out an application and pay the adoption fee ($500.00) but not for a couple of months cuz they have to put weight on the majority of them cuz their skin and bones!! They don't EVER see that particular guy(s) come out to adopt!!! Shady, shady!! They didn't explain why these people do that?? 🤔

can I add that when they show you everything the horse can do, as you said, if you do buy it, remember you have that getting to know each other period so don't expect a honeymoon right from the get go. All these tips are excellent. Just remember the horse had to get to know you and that he can trust you. Right Rick? :0) (you may have said that but that boy had me mesmerized and I can't remember if you said it...)

Excellent point about drugging horses before you buy them! A lady at our barn a few months back (shes gone now) bought an Arab and she had the mare out one day and was giving her a bath and everytime she reached up under her belly the horse would try and cow kick her and get all jumpy and just make it difficult to wash her. But she made a comment which was...I think she was drugged when I saw her because she was not like this...that horse was so dangerous and always pulling or trying to rear!

I know someone who was hospitalized after being bucked off buy a horse that was purchased at auction. The horse had been given a drug that kept it calm for 30 days. (don't remember what the drug is called) We asked our vet about it because we didn't believe that something would stay in a horses system for that long. He confirmed that it did exist. Not saying all horses are drugged at auction, but it is done. I know several people who purchased horses at auction and they ended up being real gems.

7:02 THAT RIGHT THERE. MAKES ME FURIOUS. I have recently leased an 8 yo mare that has been bred for and used in western her entire life up until a year ago where a girl who has never ridden before made her parents buy her a horse and she used the mare for English. By the point I leased her, with the girls inept training, the horse had a stiff neck, and does not know how to stop and has pain coming from turning. She also had a bit of an attitude problem, but we have powered through that and she is a wonderful, gorgeous mare. But the girl and her family decided, oh no. Her hairs to long, she can't see. So they chopped her forelock off. And. Oh no. Her manes too long, it doesn't look pretty. So they leveled her mane short. This just makes me furious because I've seen it short hand. It's now growing back but that jugs made me so angry and I'm glad I'm not the only one like. WHATS THE POINT. THEY CAN SEE FINE. I know some people do it. And I don't really care but if you say they can't see. Don't tell me that unless you have proof. If your horse ran into a wall because their forelock was in their eyes, maybe it's time for a trim. Other than that, don't cut that horses hair off because you don't know anything. Sorry. Rant. Just makes me mad though.

Some people are so cruel to horses, I work at an outback equestrian centre and my boss, Anne, rescues and retrains horses. One of the horses that came in last year was the most beautiful horse I have ever seen. She was a pretty light pally with a long mane and tail. My dream horse in the looks department. But, where she was rescued from, the man could't catch her so he tied a tractor tire to her so she dragged that around so he could catch her. So now Anne has been working with her and she has the best temperament. She is still a bit jumpy and you can't yet ride her bareback but when she is worked a bit more she will be the perfect horse.

I tend to buy older horses normally cheap old brood mares can't been backed. As little as a pound terrible just cause you can't ride them. I love ground work riding second folks think in weird. If I get a light hack all the better. Creaking doors last longest . I work better with golden oldies 😍

Here, here!! People forget how much can be done from the ground. It's not just about riding. I've had horses that could no longer be ridden & had just as much pleasure leading them out for a walk as riding. Keep on enjoying.
