Buzzard chicks grow up tough. Their nests are open to the wind and rain and if they drop their food from these high-up structures, it's gone forever. See how early trials turn these young birds of prey into resilient risk-takers, eager to be the first to fly and head out into the wild.

ABOUT THIS FILM
____________________
Buzzard ID
Common buzzards (Buteo buteo) are found on almost every continent. They belong to the hawk family. In the US, the term buzzard is often used to describe vultures, which is not at all what this species is.
Open nest
Buzzards nest in dizzyingly-high tree tops in loosely-built structures made from sticks. This means that when the chicks are old enough to no longer need brooding, they are exposed to wind and rain storms. Also, as they get bigger, and begin to stretch their legs, there is little space in these open-structures and these chicks need to cling on if they are going to avoid falling.
Parent birds
The adult birds are very diligent parents. Once the chicks no longer need brooding, they stay close to the nest, bringing in a varied diet that includes small mammals, birds, and even lizards. The female is responsible for feeding the chicks and will tear up larger meals for the chicks.
Chicks grow up tough
These chicks can handle small prey items on their own from about four weeks. But life in an exposed nest is tough, and if one drops its meal there's no getting it back!
Eager to grow up
This tough upbringing leads to a drive for independence. Just watch how the eldest chick is not afraid to take risks. It is quite a show-off too, jumping to the nearest branch and flapping its wings whilst its siblings look on.
Young vs old
Buzzard chicks hatch at three-day intervals, so there’s nearly a week between the eldest the youngest. By the time the eldest if 50 days old, it has left the nest.
First flight
I locate this juvenile buzzard in a tree nearby. It is incredible to see it exploring the world beyond the nest…… and it’s just beautiful to watch as it takes to the wing!
Next time
I'll be following the story of the remaining chicks as they too take to the skies and show you how these tough early days helped shape these birds into formidable hunters. Make sure to subscribe so you don’t miss a thing!

They're not "buzzards" as in "vultures". Only in the US they're called that. You know rough-legged hawks? In the UK they're called rough-legged buzzard. And those here are the same, but usually smaller and darker, and without the rough legs. Or you can think of it as a slightly different Swainson hawk. But at least as common as a redtail.

They are close to the Redtail, exactly the same family!! just as is normal in the US our language gets slightly twisted. The Buzzard is not a Vulture or a Hawk although a similar family to the Hawks their habits are not that similar. The two should never be given the same name, just shows people are getting confused.

buzzard’s luck n. bad luck. Editorial Note: This term refers specifically to carrion-feeding North American vultures that are called buzzards. The expression is often accompanied by the explanation that a buzzard “can’t kill nothing and nothing will die.” (source: Double-Tongued Dictionary) Not these buzzards! Incredible footage! Thanks Robert!

Yes we know there are Buzzards and 🤔Buzzards ours are the Common Buzzard Make’s it all complicated when in the US you have Turkey Vulture’s know as Buzzards Our Common Buzzard is very closely related to the Red Tailed Hawk We only refer to Sparrowhawks and Goshawks as Hawks and that’s the case in many parts of the world

Wonderful look into lives of these young Buzzard Chicks and the faithful Parents who fed them each day. Robert, when the young Buzzards are old enough to hunt on their own do they hunt with the Parents in the same general area or are they encouraged to find their own territories to hunt and nest in.?

They are pushed out from the adults territory before the following breeding season I think it sometimes depends on the availability of food/ prey as to when this happens more food the later this can happen

This is super. Thank you for sharing. Do the chicks, once fledged, come back to the nest for feeding for a while?

Yes the parents deliver food back at the nest and the chicks come and go

They can be sassy all they want look at that fuzzy head. Dropping that food suffering sassy fras, not. They saw your camera and know what you are doing Robert. They pooped on your camera to tell you how they really feel.

You seem to know your stuff when it comes to owl's, would you happen to know why an owlet would ride on the back of a turkey and why turkey lets him? It's a video, here on KZbin, I seen a few days back and I'm curious if this turkey didn't somehow adopt this owlet

Wow just looked it up Most likely the female turkey is feeling a bit maternal she may have lost her chicks and the owl is just young and probably fresh out of the nest , When birds lose there chicks they can take other chicks on the strangest I have seen a Herring Gull Raising and feeding Peregrine chicks
