Buzzed by F18's at Death Valley/ Star Wars Canyon

While on a roadtrip across country two dorks randomly out exploring on a ridge with no clue are surprised by two F18's during training in Death Valley. At the time we had no idea the spot was a regular training area. I literally had just stopped to get a shot of the canyon and some quick video of the rocks at the beginning of the video.
Definitely an incredible experience, like double rainbows or something.... Yes... I lost my shit...
BTW... Yes the "MURIKA!!" was a joke... get over it.... lol

If you guys ever watched the documentary "Independence Day" (1996) Captain Steven Hiller was in a pickle in a canyon much like this one. Since that incident, the United States Air Force decided this type of "low canyon flying" should be standard procedure in combat training.

However, when you are actually on the ground and see and hear and experience the sheer military power of these jets, you can't help but be overwhelmed momentarily by national pride and empathy for those who appose the United States and her allies. Nice video guys. I recognize your viewpoint as Father Crowley Point, overlooking Rainbow Canyon. A great place to watch fighters flying east out of the China Lake NAWC Main Range. However, just for the record, Rainbow Canyon leads into the Panamint Valley, not Death Valley. For anyone who wants to go there, Father Crowley Point is on Highway 190, between the Owens Valley and the Panamint Valley.

Yeah, the only airport around here doesn't operate jets, so when I visit my family's house near an airport, it's a real treat for me to see jets taking off and landing only a 100-200ft over my head. And they aren't even big jets, just small twinjets. I saw an F-16 (I think) fly overhead at like 200ft once when I was like 10, and was amazed by it. Shakes the ground, quite amazing.

That is cool! When I lived in Pensacola, Fl. they would fly over at O'dark thirty, 2 times a week to rattle us out of bed. You could watch them practicing and doing amazing things. Beach goers often got a show they would never forget.

Looks like these boys were on the dirt road out to Father Crowley Point, an overlook of the northern reaches of Panamint Valley, just off hwy 190, though they were technically within the boundary of Death Valley Nat Park. That's Panamint Valley the jets are flying towards in the video. Since this region is just north of China Lake Naval Weapons Center, I'd guess they were Marine jets. These impromptu "airshows" here in SoCal always give you a shot of adrenaline and national pride.

Maybe he hadn't. How often does the average person see actual fighter jets? Even most aviation enthusiasts only ever get to see them on KZbin, not in person. If you aren't in the habit of watching jet videos, when are you going to get a chance to see an F/A-18 fly overhead? I've never seen one. I've seen like one fighter at lower level in my life. Whenever I hear them going over at like 10,000ft (still louder than most jets even at that hieght) I'll drop what I'm doing to go outside and see. I still remember the time a flight went overhead at deep-twilight while the horizon was still orange, and I could see the sun glinting off their canopies, and I wondered what the world looked like up there, with dark settling below them and he sun shining on them still across hundreds of miles of cloud tops, flying towards the west. And that was the first time in years I regretted not having lived out my childhood dream of being a military aviator. The time flies by and before you realize it, it ha been 15+ years and it's too late forever.

My folks have photos from this deserted beach they found on Fraser island (NE Australia), they were hanging out swimming when F-111s started doing low level supersonic training. The photos are great, crazy blurs that look 20m off the ground, couple of nice focus shots. Seems like an awfully big plane to be flying close to the ground at that speed, much respect to the pilots in all these situations.

Any nation can own powerful military equipment and an army (and as far as effective military equipment goes, the GAU-8 is not high up there on the list. It's more impressive than it is effective)

For the most part I would agree, but the first time you get buzzed by a Jet you might change your mind. You literally feel the plane as it fly's past and depending on how fast they are going -- the time it takes the sound to get to you is honestly quite fascinating. Nothing like seeing it in person. Cool showing. I see military jets flying all the times, but never looking down on them. That is pretty cool. Around here we have all branches of the military condensed into one region. Apaches, Raptors, Eagles, Ospreys and the list goes on. Always view them from below them never above them! Great video!

When I was at George AFB in the mid eighties flying the F-4G Phantom II Wild Weasel, Death Valley was a great place for low level training. I've flown up and down this same canyon, and I'm sure I wowed the tourists as well.

Badass! I wanna go for a ride! I got buzzed several times in 2001, in, Grantown-on-Spey, Scotland, while resting on a hilltop with my dog, after the hike up. Got a wave from one of them. Was lucky to be in the right place at the right time. :)). Thanks for the video!

was doing some 4 wheeling with a friend off interstate 10 out south of Chiraco summit years back, when a couple Marine Harriers overtook us to our right, blowing by us on the deck at maybe 150, 200 feet, screamed down the valley in front of us and banked hard right around a ridge. Probably headed for the Chocolate Mountain range. Was definitely a surprise and a rush.
