Whenever I fish I am always looking to improve a method, and Buzzer fishing is no exception. I have been fishing this method for many years and I have met quite a few fellow anglers who have been fishing this method. It is very enjoyable and successful. Oh and SIMPLE. Hope you enjoy. Thanks Shaun. Very helpful. I live In British Columbia, Canada. Most people here fish buzzers static using an indicator. A mind numbing approach in my humble opinion. It works well when the hatch is on but I consistently catch more fish when using some movement. And it’s much more enjoyable than staring at a little bobber all day. I would agree with you there Andy. The buzzer take can be explosive. And to miss out on this by fishing it with an indicator is crazy. There is a lot many don't know about the buzzer. If you check out the channel and look for. The Buzzer the Truth. about four months ago. There is mixed fishing in there, but a very important bit on buzzers. I think you would like this one. I my self will fish the buzzer static. although it is not static. I am. But if that does not get results I soon start moving them. And some times a fast strip. Thanks for the comment Andy. Yes, had a couple of sessions last year on the buzzer where I could see the fish but they wouldn’t take the buzzer static or on a figure of eight retrieve. However, ripping the buzzer back as fast as I could produced several fish on both occasions. Always try what shouldn’t work when the recognised methods don’t.

I agree. Many times myself I've tried the slow or static retrieve to no avail only to try a very fast retrieve and then get hammered. It seems to against all the advice of buzzer fishing. Why is that I wonder ?

Hi Jon, its not really my way, its just another way. Just watching two high profile anglers a few days ago. surprise surprise they were retrieving the buzzer and catching plenty. Like all fishing you must try every thing. The video I posted after this one is a perfect example of when you got to move the buzzer faster to keep it high. Result Great fun and fish. Hi Shaun nice to see the video. Simplifies a lot of what is put about. Really like the idea of single fly fishing. If I go for 2 droppers and a 15' leader I seem to spend half the time untangling the leader or changing it for another one and just end up frustrated with my afternoon's fishing.

Hi David, hope your well. This is to show that fishing is not to complicated. But there are many out there that seem to make a meal out of what they are doing. But there is nothing new. Every thing still coming out today I was reading 30 years ago. The focus seems to be on the fly fisher with teams of flies, but there is so many that have to fish single or would prefer single by choice. Buzzer fishing is simple David. Hi Sam, yes I agree about more video's. But it is a balance with every thing else in life. If I was retired it might make it possible. I am pleased to hear that you are getting ideas from the video's. Mind they are not all going to be tutorials. But you can still learn by watching. Mind we will all have to be learning very soon, as things are changing very fast. Over the last two years there has been a massive change in aquatic and insect life. This in turn effects fish and fishing. I am watching this very carefully. The boys and myself have not had a good day of buzzer fishing on any water for two years now. And this year fish have been feeding constantly on caenis fly. This suggests one thing. Not a big enough hatch of anything else. Fish focus on the bigger hatches. Example. fish are feeding on caenis. A big hawthorn floats across the surface. Not a single fish touched it. we are working on how to pick fish up that are on caenis. A few people out there say they have cracked it. We have tried these methods and failed. Its not easy as they are so small. But there has to be a trick there somewhere. Some times its thinking out side the box. Thanks for the comment Sam. The water on this lake or pond are amazing. Its pure spring water, and I think the fish love it as they grow on pretty quick. Can make the fishing more difficult mind. Hi Chris, Thanks for the comment. I do static with buzzers, but when its slow I mess around.The thing is nobody has told the fish that this is a buzzer and this is how it works. All I am doing is simulating the bung style with a floating line and keep contact. I have fished this on a top water garnffrwd and matched the blokes fishing the bung. Yes more cameras, and I am still trying to set them up, as I am hopeless with stuff like that. They normally work on idiot mode.You are lucky to have had a good buzzer hatch and fish it. I am still waiting for a decent hatch to fish. All I have had is slow small hatches like in the video. Nice to hear from you and thank you. Hi Jonathan, yes it was great meeting you. The braid is not so important. As you have been watching this video. The more important part here is the buzzer. There are two sorts of buzzer. The resin buzzer, which sinks fast, and the slightly dressed buzzer, which slows its descent. It is the dressed buzzer which I find more successful. And certainly when the fishing is slow. Wish I had given you a few buzzers now. My most used one, is the red buzzer. I have got a video tying the buzzer. All it needs is a bit of peacock herl. Lindsay Simpson done one about a year ago, which looks quite good. Think he's been copying me. Anyway keep in touch mate and take care. Shaun. OH thanks for your support.

Stripping buzzers! Although I have plenty of buzzers in my box. The thought of just drifting and watching a bung never appealed to me, and thus all they do is look good in my fly box. Never had the confidence to straight line fish with them or indeed fish multiple flies on a leader, I spend more time undoing tangle's than fishing. I started watching your clip last week and stopped half way through and picked it up again this morning. Just about to leave it when you got onto stripping the buzzer. Something i have never contemplated, but I must say. My next visit to a water I will definitely put this into practice. Very interesting. Thanks for he tip.... Hi Alan, what a great comment. First of all I never fish a bung. I have done it, just to say I have. It was the most boring thing and most of all it eliminates the strike from the fish. For me I love the hit from the fish. When you have contact with your fly, then all of a sudden bang, fish on. Amazing feeling. The buzzer hatch was not as good this year as previous years. I think things are changing due to climate. But I hope this was just a one off. Second I look in my fly box and see patterns that will fish many ways. Unlike most, say would look at a buzzer and think it needs to be fished like this. Its just another bug as far as the fish is concerned. Fish don't have KZbin. Some will say a buzzer can be fished all year round. Which is true for most patterns. But it would not be my first choice for this time of year. Fish are moving onto fish fry. And a buzzer is not a good representation of a small fish. So it seems I will have to wait till next spring for your support. Oh bye the way, I nearly always fish shorter tippets and single fly, and I still catch plenty of fish. My fish count has not gone down since last fishing a team of flies. Tied some pulling buzzers copied from MD fly fishing. After a good day yesterday thought I would try them, for the last 5 minutes. got a hit immediately and a second follow. What is the “braid” please ? How do you buy this and how do you connect it to your line and to your Tippett - I have NEVER caught a fish on a buzzer - are you using just one buzzer here ? Thank you very much

The Braids that we were using were Snowbee. However they have stopped making them. Intermediate is the one to have. Roman mosser is a company to look at. Not the same as Snowbee, if I remember they are longer. Connecting is simple as they are loop to loop. Its a shame as regards the buzzer fishing. Buzzers do not hatch in the numbers as we had years ago. You will often catch on buzzers as they can simulate a lot of aquatic life. Before this video every body believed buzzers were to be fished static. Now they have flies they call the stripping buzzer. More fish are caught with some form of movement. OK you may not be so lucky to experience the hatches we had years ago. However some parts of the country can experience some decent buzzer hatches. But as I have already said, the buzzer can simulate many aquatic creatures. So you can fish a buzzer with confidence. When the fish are on the move we will often fish one buzzer. 10' plus tippet, the longer the better. I explain this in some of our videos. If the fishing is really slow, and are unable to determine as to what depth they are. We will often fish a team of three. Start by fishing them on a drift with the wind, or even static. But if no response, start to increase your retrieve. Before giving up on any pattern, you should try all retrieves. Good look with the fishing Howard. What is your leader made of a tapered mono or single line fluorocarbon ?

On the end of my braid leader I have a loop. So I make a perfection knot onto this. And its single line fluorocarbon. keeping things simple for me and it works.

Hi Shaun. One of your best yet and very informative. A couple of questions. As you know I have a thing about line memory. What make of line was problematic at the beginning of the video? It was interesting to hear your thoughts about feeling for bites. Have you any experience when using/comparing low stretch and nonstretch lines when using this method of bite detection? Finally, it would be very useful to show a close-up of the flies you use. For example on the day what colours were you using? Take care mate :)

Hi David, Yes I have a thing about line memory and its a bigger problem on still waters. The first line was not a massive problem but I required better. It was a trout flies line, which I have been putting on the water for the last 5 trips. I give all my lines a fare go. More lines on the way. As regards bite detection for low stretch and normal stretch. About the same. However a non stretch has better hooking at big distance. And big distance I mean over 80 plus foot. So for the average fly fisher its something they need not worry about. Now if you are referring to this video and the flies. Then you need a smack on the hand, as you were not paying attention. Hi Keefer thanks for taking the time to view and mostly comment. This video was during my very early days. Had no idea about presenting a video and editing I think is miles out. But I have improved a bit since. I do not post every week, but what I post will be the best that I can do at the time. I try to be informative, sometimes with a twist, but most of all honest. Buzzer fishing I have done for over 35 years. But over the last few years I have noticed a decline in the hatches. Some areas are effected more than others. The number of flies I put on depends on one, the depth of water, two, the size of hatch. When the hatch is small it can be difficult to find the fish. So more flies go on. This can be slow fishing despite what you may see on a channel which is edited. If you are in deep water, anything over say 20' three flies. BUT IF you find your self so lucky to be amongst a really big hatch. This is when millions are coming up at the same time, and this could be restricted to one area. Then its one fly. Tippet anything from 4' to 10'. Choice of buzzer is not so important. But I would keep them simple and size 14 is always a good bet. But during these big hatches your catch rate will rocket. Oh and one point about fishing the buzzer is the hit. If you decide to fish with a bung of sorts, you will miss out big time. Straight line every time. There is a lot more to the buzzer than most realise. They do very well when fished like a nymph. Fast. I have an interesting point on buzzers in the next video due out by end of week. What length is your leaders to keep the flies higher in the water

Hi Andrew, the shortest tippet I have fished is 2' which is attached to a 7' floating braid leader. I was in the process of doing a video on this, had two fish. Then decided to shorten it to 1'. bye the time I had done this the fish went down. I will get this on a video some time soon. But I have had a lot of fish on a 2' tippet. Some fish are spooked by line flash as it hits the water, that is all lines. But once it has sat there a while they are fine with it. The tippet length is only a means of presenting the fly. So what ever depth I want my fly, will be the length of tippet. I hope this helps. Any thing else just ask. Shaun.

Hi Brian, It is in Pembrokeshire West Wales. Hayscastle Fishery. There is not much online info on it. But the rewards are great, as the fish really are top notch and very hard fighting. The water is so clear which can make the fishing a bit difficult at times. And if you would like a fish for the table, they say these are the best eating fish. Hi m8 new to buzzer fishing, if I was fishing the top hat buzzer on a cast of 3 would that be tied on the point or as a top dropper?

Hi Martin, both positions are great. But its going to be decided on the day or some times on the hour. Fish may or may not be on the buzzers, but they will often take fish. The first thing to establish is weather the fish are high in the water or not. If they are deeper put it on the top dropper. If they seem to be high put it on the point. This time of year they may not be showing much, but could well be a few feet down. Its a pity that you are only getting into buzzer fishing now. Buzzers are most definitely on a decline. The response from the fish is nothing as it used to be. But the good news is fish will pick a buzzer up even if there is no buzzer hatch. A buzzer can be fished like a nymph as you may have seen at the end of this video, as more and more people are discovering. I have meet more people now than ever that retrieve the buzzer. I will fish them static to start, which will pick up fish deeper. But if nothing I start a retrieve and some times end up a really fast figure of eight. Mess about with them mate. Hi Shaun… this was a really enjoyable and informative video. I know what you mean about how satisfying it is to get the feeling of the take with direct contact, fishing slowly. I found your points about the dressings to slow the descent really useful, but I’ve got one question. I’ve always struggled with trying to visualise the depths the flies are fishing at. A few times you said “this was 4ft down, this was about 6ft down,” etc. How are you getting these estimates? Are they based on how far into the cast the fish has taken (so, assuming some slow sink rate even with keeping contact?) Or are you counting down at any point, particularly after the flies landed? Hi Ryan, you are more or less on it there. yes I calculate the time in the water once cast, and allowing for the drag of wind or retrieve. I do check how quick the pattern sinks by watching it in the margins first. But how far it drops depends on conditions. I can tell you most people think they are deeper than they actually are. If you are fishing in a wind, there is undertow going in the opposite direction, and at the same pace as the wind and some times stronger. The wind will hold your fly up and the undertow holds it up even more. Undertow is not complicated, its just we can't see it. And it's never talked about as they can't get there heads around it. I have done a video on undertow. Called the invisible river. But in the video you just watched, it was easy to calculate the depth as the water was slack. But as the wind picks up, then the pattern is more likely higher. There are so many variables to this. But I hope this gives you a bit more of an understanding. But don't get to wrapped up in the depth thing. If someone on the water says the fish are about 10' down, who's to say they are reading it properly. If anybody tells me that, I just take it that they ain't on the top. If there is any thing just ask. Take care mate and good fishing. Shaun.

The boys have covered a few waters, and one of them is in north wales at moment checking out the waters. This mainly as I want to do a remote water in the hills for next year, over a few days. I am lucky the boys look after me, and they help a lot when we are trying new things. Actually the next few videos will show some of what we have been doing. I will do Ellerdine this year. I know you are wright. Thing is I am new to doing this stuff and I had no intention of having a channel. But I have accepted it now and want to improve. I think the most important thing is to be honest. I have many years experience fishing but none on video making and computers. Whats with the braid though? are you using it to help you turn over the line as I cant see why else it would be useful?

Hi John, Yes it can help turn over, as it is a tapered braid. For my self and many people have found a good few benefits with the braids. First of all they are floating, Intermediate, Slow Sink and Fast Sink. Loop to loop both ends, which means we can switch them very easily. I can loop to my fly line loop with no damage. Unlike tippet which will cut into the line. I only need one good floating fly line. If I want to present a dry fly I go floating braid. If I want Sink tip I go Intermediate or Slow sink, and fast sink for patterns I want to fish a bit quicker, but maintain that lower level. However they do not replace a sink line. The sink ones do however pull a fly line down if you were wanting to fish smaller or naturals deeper and slower. You can control the depth of these patterns with a lot more ease than a sink line. I hope this gives you a bit more insight to leaders John. Oh bye the way another leader material used is the mono or poly. I have tried these and found they carry to much memory. @@johncarrigan5530 I nearly always put my fly into the margins before fishing it. This gives me an idea as to how fast it drops in the water. I then drag it around in the water to see how it moves. Once I have cast I have a good idea as to how deep the fly has dropped. There are sometimes things to consider such as wind speed. Which will hold the fly up. But in the main its a calculation, but a fairly good one. If you ever have anything your not sure about John, Please check me out. If I have not got the answer I am sure one of the boys will. Thank you so much James. Ever since doing this video I have been looking for the opportunity to do a full on buzzer hatch and fish. Sadly this has never materialised due to the low numbers of buzzers hatching. Not sure where you are, but the UK is suffering a dramatic weather change due to the jet stream moving so far south. Our south and south westerlies used to bring warm air in from the Atlantic. Now it brings the cold north Atlantic. People out there say they are having the same buzzer fishing. But what they are fishing is stock fish, which will eat most things that move. I fish most of my time for resident fish, which are more tuned in to there food. A fish will target the largest hatch. And at the moment and like the past two years is the smallest of flies, which can tolerate lower temperatures. Such as the Cainis fly. The one good thing about this pattern is that I don't always fish it as a buzzer. Its a great stripping pattern and on a long tippet fished near the bottom, the blood worm. The fish see the buzzer as a small nymph or bug darting across the water. So many people think its to small to fish fast. Its our perspective. Hi Bob thanks for the comment, Yes and No. I really enjoy using the Snowbee tapered braids 5' they help turn over and give me more options when fishing. They come in a few lengths and have floating, intermediate, slow sink and fast sink. This mainly started when I fished the rivers. But have found them very useful on still waters. I’m not new to fly fishing but I’ve been fishing in still water as of late and the fish seem to not bite on conventional flies. You pickup one or two but I believe these trout are taking the buzzers and I’ve tied up a few and going to give them a swim. Trying to crack the code. Thanks for the information. Hi Stan, sounds like you are like us boys. Come from the rivers. You are correct, you will pick fish on conventional flies and it will be slow. First thing to remember the fish you are fishing for now have never seen natural foods in there life. So these stock fish will be more drawn to bigger flash flies with movement. Fish these patterns higher and a bit faster, as stock fish spend more time higher in the water. This is because they have never been deeper than about five foot in there lives. They will slowly start to switch onto natural foods and move around the waters and go deeper. These fish will then be more difficult to catch, but for most will fall to a more natural pattern. Buzzer fish is not as it was years ago. Insect life in this country is on a massive decline. The last really good hatch I fished was over two years ago. We will still catch on buzzers. But why we catch on buzzers is more down to its size more than what it is. The buzzers we see are nothing like a real buzzer. The size of pattern is more important. But if you happen to be on the water and there is a big hatch, you need not worry about what buzzer or how deep it is. The fish are on a frenzy and smashing every thing in there path at all depths. At this time you only need one fly on. When we don't know whats going on and where the fish are we fish with as many as we can cope with. We often fish the buzzer static at first, but we don't spend to much time at this method. We will start with a slow figure of eight, and end up with a fast retrieve. Fish all patterns with as many retrieves as possible, regardless of what they say. So stock fish bigger brighter, and as the fish become more tuned in go smaller and more natural. Small and sparse is good. When the fish are high or if the water is clear, fish this faster than norm. Give it a go. I hope you get to grips with it soon. Most of it is common sense. Good luck Stan. I’ve noticed that I will pick up a few fish but the fishing has been difficult for me. There is usually not much visibly hatching and I think that their eating something small in abundance. @@shaunfishes101 Hey Shaun, thanks for taking an interest. It’s a club pond about 20 acres shallow on one end with tons of lilly pads and deep on the other end to about twenty feet. It gets stocked in March and April and may with 300 then 100 and 100. The water is clean and clear and the trout seem to do well. Their are some rough fish in there like bass and crappie and bluegill. The trout hammer those pretty hard. May flies hatch in there as well as caddis. Plenty of little stuff too and that is probably the most abundant and makes me think that might be to go to in thete for consistent fish catching. I’ve tried all kinds of different stuff. You know trout. Some days they’ll hit anything but mostly their difficult. You’ll catch a couple but I know there’s plenty of fish in there and you shoukd catch more. It’s more challenging than stream fishing. I love fishing faster water and have mist if my life. You make good sense when you said the fish stay closer to the top when their first stocked because they live their first year in tanks a few feet deep so it probably takes some time before they can go deeper and I always fish deep. That’s where the bruisers end up because I’ve caught several of the bigger three four pounders on bigger stuff like wooly buggers. Mostly rainbows and brookies with an occasional brownie. Makes me think these fish might be hitting smaller chironimid type insects. Anyway that’s about the low down and thanks for taking an interest. I’d still be in rivers if I could wade but due to injury I have to moderate my activity. I can still fish still water so on I go. @@reserrvoirman This is a big water compared to a lot of waters over here. We would avg 400 to 500 fish in a quality water at around 3/4 acre. But this is a water where fish are taken out for the table. We calculate natural death and predatory kill along with fish taken for the table. What ever the numbers are we then restock. This is done throughout the year. What we have noticed, is when we restock it gets the resident fish moving. In this may give you an idea why we catch more often. You say you always fish deeper. This is great for bruisers as you say. But you may well be limiting your catch rate. Fish spend more time looking up, and as you have said the water quality is good. There for a fish sat on the bottom will see your fly much higher up. I think you should experiment and enjoy the process. I would start with a few different size patterns. Fish them high and fast. Try this at different times of the day. You should find out quite quickly if this works. It is more effective mornings and evenings. Buzzers are effective. I was asked not so long back what would be my go too pattern, and if I could only use one fly for the whole year. Simple. The buzzer. The chap who made the comment, said olive damsel for him. Big mistake. He can be successful for short periods. The buzzer all year, but can be fished in many ways. A buzzer does not need half the dressings people put on them. A simple buzzer which is mainly tying thread with a wire around, can be very effective. Worth having a few around a size 10. But 14 and 16 is more common. But remember you can fish these fast at times. All done on a Floating line. Not sure if you do this. But I have introduced a log book on the water. Every body puts down what they catch, what on and method. This helps a bit for those who's catch rate is lower. But it also shows how the fish behave from day to day. We have noticed that the better fish here are most definitely feeding on the small stuff. Which was so different from several years ago. Fish do switch onto the biggest hatch. For us this is due to climate change I am certain. Our temperatures are lower. Smaller insects can tolerate lower temps. Only the other day I was watching as we had a hatch of Hawthorn flies coming off. Only a few fish took advantage. The rest kept on cruising taking in the small stuff. So the fishing looks more challenging. But at least we are fishing. Keep in touch. Shaun.

@@garypage6960 OK I have found one. Its unreal really when you look at how many buzzers are out there. Seems like every body is tying for the fun of it, and I bet most have not caught much more than a dozen fish. Any way the one I found is Kindale Light Weight red quill buzzer. The key word for me there is light. I would fish this with confidence. And that is the most important thing in fishing. Confidence. Believe me we are no different from you or any body else. We just go onto the water with confidence. If you ever get onto the water early, say for the first 2 hours. Thats 8 to 10. Check out the top 2'. You may not see the fish, but they are often there. I fish a small dry hook with a bit of fox dubbing, then a very small amount of gink only on the back. It will sit on top for a while and if it goes under fine. just start a very slow figure of eight and maybe a few pauses. Keep in touch Gary. Shaun.

Hi James, I fish two mainly. black and a red one. I do sometimes fish the resin buzzers. But mainly they are slow sinking buzzers. And this because I fish a lot for resident fish, not stock fish. Its great having fun with the stock fish, but you ain't going to learn much. There is a lot of buzzers out there, and they can all work really well on the day. Its more about your own confidence in the pattern. And when the fish are feeding heavily on the buzzer, you need not worry as to what buzzer. They smash them all. I will be covering more on buzzers soon, with a short video. I really believe people don't get the best from there buzzers.

@@andrewsmyth6027 When fishing slower or even static, a bad line is going to make thing very difficult. Mind even some of the better lines require a very slow retrieve just to keep contact. I do find the more aggressive lines carry more memory. OK for casting but crap at fishing. We spend more time on the 5 and 6# stuff. And never use things like rocket lines.
