I am a tall man, and there usually isn't a lot of legroom on the bus or train for me to simply keep my legs in front of me. It is NOT that deep! At least not always. My dad and brother are 6ft 2 inches tall. They really need the space. It is very uncomfortable for them to not sit like that. Sometimes they would rather just stand than sit in small places in an uncomfortable way. And I feel the same. If there is space, I like to keep my backpack on the seat next to me and sit comfortably. And if the space is too narrow, I usually just keep standing. I also tend to sit like that sometimes in my car or in public transport when I'm with my friend group. The history: And about the opened up legs, we all do that unknowingly when we are comfortable. Most women tend to sit like that at home all the time. In public places, it is more of cultural conditioning. Also, generations of conditioning because since old times, women would wear dresses and cultural attire like short or long dresses which were not like pants at all. So they HAD to close their legs when they were in public to avoid exposing themselves and also avoid all the predators. So, we don't learn this "Sit with your legs closed" thing from the men in our lives, but from the women in our lives because their moms and grandmoms taught them that and so on. It was an instinct to protect themselves from the predatory male gaze. If we weren't taught that, we would probably be doing the same thing in public. They need to do better research and get their facts right before jumping on the bandwagon to use these buzz words.

I don't even do it on purpose, and if I am taking up room on bus and someone wants to sit down, I move my legs closer together, yet still apart, and let them sit. Most people don't care about how you sit. It's honestly more logical for women to sit with their legs closer together than men because their hips are usually proportioned differently. (Men often walk with wider gaits. Some women do too, but again, it's thanks to bone structure.) One of my girl friends sat with her legs spread kind of wide, but nobody cared. She stood with her legs far apart too, so it was just her natural state.

Just a quick note: this *isn't* feminism. My family and I are all feminists and this bullshit is what makes people think feminism is a joke. These are just women who want to bitch about everything they "don't like" (and trifles at that) and want to stick a cool term to their pettiness. You know what feminism is about? Actual issues.
