It's actually pretty cool! The idea isn't to "sound like doctors", rather it's to provide insight to our communication skills. We have actors who come in and present themselves as our patients whom we interact with and receive feedback from fellow physicians. The goal is to help us practice our history taking skills, read abstract social cues, understand where miscommunication on behalf of either party can be remedied, etc. It's valuable in the sense that the interactions are low-stakes and we get to learn through trial and error. One of my memorable experiences was practicing how to give bad news to a patient. It aimed to instill empathy into a situation where someone may be hearing the worst news of their life. It may not be the real thing, but it's great practice and helps you improve on your interactions with real patients on the wards.

not always...I'm 5 years in now and I still am passionate about medicine and helping people but the amount of studying you have to do (I'm in Heidelberg I don't know about american unis) is overwhelming and for me it kills all the fun I used to have with medicine...even though it still is my dream job I think I would live an overall happier life if I had decided against studying it...other than that I also started having a lot of negative experiences with patients who seem to always know what they have and just want MDs to give them medication and get angry if we say that their own diagnosis is wrong...or they won't vaccinate their children or just overall think we just want their money and so on...When I decided to become a doctor I had everyones happiness in mind - now it feels like I am killing my own life to make others happy who won't even appreciate my work. When choosing med school it is very very important to note: is it the thing that makes you 100% happy? and do the circumstances maybe drown like 10% of your happiness? maybe it would be better to go with plan B which makes you 98% happy and where doing it only kills 3% of your happiness...

my mom went into med school thinking she wanted to go into a certain field and halfway through she changed her mind and now she's a neurointensivist and she is the smartest person i've ever met. when she talks about medical school it sounded like hell so major props to everyone who works really hard to pursue their careers 😊

Medical School is only the beginning. Residency and fellowships are even harder. And then there is board certifications and licensing. The list goes on. For those who are thinking about it make sure you’re passionate and those who are in the midst of it keep that passion!

My dad was my practice patient a few days before my Step2CS exam. This exam is a clinical skills assessment where you see a number of standardized patients over a day and are graded on it. Anyway, I listened to his heart and heard an irregular, abnormally rapid heartbeat. I ended up telling him to go to the cardiologist because I was pretty sure he had something called Atrial Fibrillation and needed to get treatment. I ended up being correct, and he thankfully is getting treatment for it. Being in medical school is amazing but definitely hits home if you end up finding something wrong in a friend or family member.
