Pattaya, Thailand, is home to millions of fantastic memories. But with so much fun also comes possible confrontation and issues.
In this video I share a few things I have seen over the years as well as tips on avoiding possible trouble when you are here.
Pattaya is amazing, a wonderful place to visit and a place that has to be on your list of places to go. Just make sure when you visit you keep your head clear and your mind focused. Don't let Pattaya become a nightmare rather than an amazing time!

All the problems that I encountered was with drunk tourists. Mostly drunk Russians. But drunk people just don't realize they cannot fight drunk. You will be more likely be able to distinguish the difference between a ladyboy and a lady if you are just a little buzzed. But many men use alcohol as an excuse to be with a ladyboy...a hidden fantasy...555

Yeah me too, I never had any issues. As long as you keep smiling and being respectful people are much more helpful than in my homecountry. In my country if I want something from somebody: "Oh that's difficult." "Oh it's impossible" "It's your fault now you have to pay xxx." or "We cannot do this.". In Thailand however: "Ok no problem we will find a way." Just love it.

Trevor, this is one of the most important videos you have made ever. MATES, Play this video over again and try to understand what he is saying to you. He absolutely, knows what he is talking about. Something that seems like nothing to us is a big deal to Thai people, things can escalate quickly here. His comments about going with the flow and being polite are spot on...The Thais are beautiful people, that's why we're here. Respect our place, we are only guests.

I had an interesting encounter with a vendor on my second trip. Everyday in front of my hotel there was a lady selling fruit. I bought 2 bags everyday for three days but I was being charges twice the cost as the locals. On the fourth day I saw a couple of kids, kinda dirty just sitting looking bored. So, I bought them a bag of fruit each. they smiled and said Kapuncup. Then on my fifth day. The same lady charged me the same price as locals. Not sure exactly why she charged me less but I liked the fact that she was treating me like a local. I did leave a 100 baht tip on my last out. I really think if you take care of them, they will take care of you!

I love how you're emphasising that us foreigners are GUESTS in Thailand. It's good, especially for us heavy-drinking Brits, to remember that the days have long gone when we arrived somewhere and automatically assumed superiority. We are not their superior, we are simply GUESTS, and must behave politely and with good humour like we would if invited into a stranger's home. It behoves us to apologise even if in the wrong, and treat their country, their monarchy and their sweet people with huge respect. It will be returned tenfold, and you will learn so much more about the lovely Thai people and their culture.

The clearest and most realistic advice I've ever seen concerning Pattaya Trev. Well said. Lad's Especially Newbies... Listen and learn because they really will hurt you. I've been going since 1991 and lost count of how many times I been. In all that time i've seen it get really serious twice, and it was Brutal. The first time, a ship was in port for R&R. Walking street was crowded with drunk loud, I'm bigger than you types. One guy was pawing and grabbing at a girl in a bar (in fairness his two mates were trying to get him out). All at once the girl just said something, roughly translated something like tell this man to be nice. One of the door men landed a single kick which either broke or dislocated the clowns knee, he went down like a sack of poo and didn't get up. He was twice the size of the door man and obviously thought he was hard, he wasn't. Then... the girl added her displeasure to the guys knee. His mates had the sense to stay back because within seconds the bar was flooded with Thai men from other bars. When the MP's arrived a couple of minutes later the clown was thrown into the back of a vehicle while a uniformed Sergeant spoke to the bar manager and girl and paid a huge fistfull of cash in 'Compensation'. If that guy wasn't permanently injured he was lucky. And the girls just carried on dancing! The second I saw was a German and you could see it coming a mile off. He got smacked, very hard, and those stiletoe heels do much more than make a girl look tall. The boys in brown took him away for complimentary room and board but, word got around he was in hospital waiting for a flight home. DO NOT get into that situation, you will get hurt and it will spoil your fun. Big smile. Apologise even if it chokes you. Buy a few drinks, and leave quietly. You might just get away in one piece. Pattaya is fantastic but it's their Country not yours. Their rules not yours!

Another great video Trev full of wisdom and knowledge. I am one of those people who are doing a lot of research before I commit to visiting Thailand. The last time I was there was in the mid 1990’s for business when I was always with my Thai business colleagues. Have only been to Bangkok and fell in love with the country. Now it is 25 years later and the world has completely changed. Not sure if I have the stamina anymore but need to learn first and your advice is much appreciated. One author of a book that I read about the expat experience said that he mostly contends with Thailand by being a "polite ghost." Invisible for the most part, very polite for the rest. I don't fully agree with his take on Thailand, but I do believe that if you're going to call attention to yourself, it should be for doing something good, or something nice. It's my experience that politeness and kindness go a long way in Thailand. Thanks for the advice, Trev. Good job.

The confrontation part is tricky especially when big bucks are involved. I remember 4 years ago I bought a BMW from German auto in Pattaya, it was a nightmare. Long story short, the ECU was bugged in the car, god knows how in a car with 0 miles on it. I realized it after 10 minutes from taking the car out after paying. When I went back they refused that it’s their fault. And to be honest I was probably inches away from getting a thrashing from the BMW staff. Well, anyone will lose his mind if he realizes that the car for which he paid 6 million baht has one of its core function missing. Had to contact Bmw HQ in Munich to get this sorted. To my hidden pleasure, BMW Munich fined the dealer and warned of a possible cancelation of the dealership. But my learning is, Thailand have an uncivilized side of it which will turn ugly. So, kept away from it.

A few Thai words I learnt when first heading to Thailand and came in handy many a time. ( Mai pen rai. ) 'Never mind.' (kor Toht krap ) 'Sorry, Excuse me'. And for any persistent vendor or 'Mister, you want massage?'. (Mai OW krap.) 'No thanks or Don't want'. All said with a smile of course.

Currently in Thailand nearly half way through a 2 week travelling holiday me and my friend spent 3 nights in pattaya we only had 1 small issue where our bill had been mixed up with those sat next to us or that is what the staff told us, but all we did was politely tell them what we've had a couple of minutes later our real bill came out with no issues and no dramas, as fir the street vendors we found the best way to deal with them was just say no and ignore them

I had a (predictable) bad experience in a Russian GoGo in Phuket. My travel companion wanted to go in there so reluctantly I agreed. While I was chatting up one girl another woman just walked up and started dancing in front of me. I repeatedly told her no thanks I'm talking to this other person; Eventually I just ignored her until the end of the song long when she said I owed her a 600 baht for the dance. I refused.... As expected, I Gore the bouncer came over and tried to intimidate us. I took half of your advice!😎 I wasn't drunk and I remain calm and politely told him " Whether you and I make the news tonight is entirely up to you but the the one thing I can guarantee is you will not get a single penny out of me". He thought about it for at least 20 seconds and eventually said OK you 2 just leave, Which we politely did. It may have helped that I was 93cm and 20 stones... but even when you decide to stand your ground, being sober and polite is good advice.

I've never been to Thailand in all my 64 years, and never considered it either. I am a recovering alkie so have no use for the bars there. But the street food fascinates me, and just sitting and watching the nightlife go by looks wonderful. Then I'd be up at the crack of 10am to go and have breakfast and then a nice long swim in the sea. It all looks so amazingly inexpensive, no wonder retirees fo there. It doesn't necessarily have to be a full migration, just a burst of six or eight weeks through the worst of the British winter. All that good cheer and friendliness would recharge my batteries no end. To hell with what my family or friends say - if they think I'm up to dating girls every night then who cares? I'm not asking them to join me. I want to find out about cheap accommodation, preferably with a stove as I like to cook.

A couple of other things to be aware of with regards to the boys in brown (police) are if you are a smoker and drop your cigarette butt, that they are red hot with a 2000 baht fine for littering. (Especially at night they will spot that red glow hitting the ground without you knowing they are watching.) My mates tip was to roll the burning end out of the butt and put the butt in his pocket then when he got the hand on the shoulder from the boys in brown he just showed the butt and end of story. the second being if you are going to ride a motorbike always wear a helmet. There can be 50 Thai's riding without a helmet but will always be the 1 farang without the helmet that gets pulled over.

Was strolling down walking street a few years ago and saw a farang, two security guards, and two police standing by the ATM outside the 7-11. Farang was looking a little worse for wear and had clearly been thumped at some point. Moral of the story, the odds are never in your favor, pay attention to your surroundings and your bin, and at the end, to quote Kenny Rogers, you have to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away, and know when to run. :) P.S. Good video in my years of visiting Thailand if you settle in to a bar for the night make sure you pay your bill every 2 hours that will save you a lot of grief at times and when the bar staff know that you will never get additional drinks added onto your bill good lesson for first timers cheers and enjoy 🍷🍷🥂🥂🍻🍻👍👍

Thankfully I have never encounted any issues. Reasons being is 1) I always remember and respect I am a guest when travelling, their rules, customs. 2) I'm a very happy drunk, never violent but am also someone who always respects everyone, who am I to judge someone else. 3) Had a situation where I was heavily drunk, bin was 8000 b and zero chance it was accurate. I just paid and leave, no arguments. When your on holidays it's really so easy to just remain happy and calm, just accept it and move on. And if your going to get drunk be the sort of person who is a lovable drunk and let nothing fuss you. Who can possibly be angry in a place like Pattaya?

I know a married couple who once took a holiday in Pattaya. The woman said she'd never go there again! That makes me wonder why anyone would call Pattaya amazing or fantastic. I like the warm climate. I'm always cold, except in the sauna, but in Thailand I can walk around in shirtsleeves even at night. Thailand is a poor developing country where the police don't necessarily side with the innocent victim of a crime. I never get in the situations described in this video anyway, so I'm always out of harm's way. Even though I do visit Thailand once a year, I can think of many cities that are certainly more attractive than Pattaya. And I agree with what someone has said earlier: this video may not increase the number of potential visitors to Thailand even though every word is true.

Brilliant topic. It's my number one bit of advice. Here is how I knew the rules of not getting involved with this probably kept me out of a jam. I had just arrived from BKK from Udan Thani. It was after 2am and I had met up with a buddy from Germany for some drinks and was walking back to my hotel after a few. On the way I stopped at 7/11 for a coconut water a Thai Red Bull for my morning hang over and a Thai ice tea for the road. I stopped on some steps on the corner of I think Soi 12 and Beach Road at a business of sorts. There were bushes along the business front. I was chatting up some freelancers just for conversation and I hear a girl screaming at someone to my left. Knowing Thai people generally don't scream I knew something was going down. She was flinging beer at a guy from Australia from a Chang bottle. How do I know he was Australian? He had a tattoo of a cartoon kangaroo on his shoulder so it's a solid guess. Having enough of her, he turned, grabbed her 105 lb body and threw her through the bushes so hard she hit her head on the white wall. I sat there and just sipped my Thai ice tea as two motor taxi guys on the corner right there jumped off their bikes and beat the living SNOT out of this wanker. Still sipping on my drink one guy turned, grabbed the bottle from the ground and cracked it over the guy's head!! This happened nor more than 4 feet from me and I had some large shards of glass land on me. The guy did a face plant right on the pavement and the blood oozed and I thought to myself "I'm looking at a dead man" and I took another sip and just enjoyed the show. In an instant after they did it they turned and noticed I was hit with glass. The knew I was cool as I was talking to the ladies and they smiled a few times to my comments with them. Like a flip of a switch they went from animal mode to super nice to me saying "Mr. you have glass, are you OK....are you OK?" as they picked the glass off of me. I told them "yes, now RUN." So they sped off on their bikes and I found a quick exit while the ladies did too. I'm sure they guy must have been a "skippy" or something having not paid his bill with her or something. That said, I have never felt more safe than in Thailand and I travel alone. I've been lost down late at night and I never got concerned. I'm sure my story is rare but none the less, boy was it exciting. Moral of the story, DON"T GET INVOLVED WITH ANYTHING. You are in a movie..........enjoy the show but don't be an actor in it. If the cops come you will never win with the police as they will save the "face" of the Thai. Be chill, quiet and respectful to everyone and you will never have a problem. If you get in a pickle, smile and walk away. Even the Soi Dogs will kick your ass. Cheers.

In 14 years of living in Bangkok and Pattaya I've seen my fair share of Dust Ups between Thais and foreigners. I've never seen a Thai in a 1 on 1 fight a foreigner. They will ALWAYS fight in packs. 1on 1 they are gutless. Remember there are only 2 rules in Thailand: 1) The Farang is always wrong, and 2) The Farang will always pay $.

He took the gun of her and snapped it over his knee, all he'll broke loose he began to run down the road under a hail of beer bottles from the girls from all the bars then 2 thai guy jumped on a bike went after him and knocked him to the ground next thing police arrived and threw in to the back of there pick up truck. Do not know what happened to him after that. I wish I had it on video it was hilarious.

Lot of good info on this video. One of the main ones was remove yourself from the situation. Words to live by! It's just not worth it. The vendors: They are just trying to make a living. It's what they do. Just be polite, I know it's hard for the 198th time, but just be cordial and say you don't want any. About the two girls getting into a row over you: Yes, don't get involved. If possible, better to pay your bill and leave.......by yourself! You can find a new teerak a couple of Soi's over from the one you were on.

Dont know if its still a problem as it was years back when I visited "especially with whats going on now" but the go-go bars with the pretty blonds and brunettes are usually owned by Russian gangster and not a good place to go in for a drink. When I was there if you ever made that mistake it could cost you a LOT MORE than a drink and a bar fine to leave the place in one piece. May have changed now but heard quite a few horror stories about bad experiences in those places.

Solid advice. I'd be more worried about fellow tourists than Thai people. Also, if you are travelling with some friends, make it clear that if they act the d?ck, not follow Trevor's sensible advice, and get themselves into bother, that you won't be stepping in to share the consequences. And if they plan to go/ do something dodgy, and you don't feel comfortable with it, do be a sheep : leave them to it, and do your own thing. Trust your own Spidey senses.

Good advice Trev, Just emphasize a couple of things, Inappropriate touching, I have had the experience several times, being with my current squeeze, she goes to the bar and some geezer puts his hands on her, boy does that get them irate, The other thing is , walk into a bar, have a beer, then pick out a girl and say I want you, then get offended when they say no, Bars girls are allowed to say no. Made the mistake once, of talking to a nice bargirl with my current squeeze in tow over drinks, for an hour or so , kissed her hand when we left, boy did I get an earbashing over that, for days.

In March '10 I recall meeting some stragglers from a Stag party in the now gone music bar's nr end of Soi 8 (Beach Rd). A particular lad had no idea where his hotel was and we never saw him again, even though he promised to meet up again as he was enthralled by my advice for future reference. MY POINT IS......never, ever leave your hotel without putting their business card in your wallet. Because this is your lifeline to returning to your arranged and paid for accommodation. The amount of newbie's I've met that are steaming drunk and have zero recollection of their digs is staggering.
