The Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed al-Maktoum is one of the five richest monarchs in the world with a fortune of 18 billion dollars. But by the number of wives he is out of competition. The most famous of them, Princess Haya, escaped from the monarch along with her children in 2019. And this is not the only scandalous episode in the life of the sheikh's wives. Princess Haya is sister of King Abdullah of Jordan, as opposed to some of the other wives who did not have that kind of connections, and that surely played a role on her succesful escape to the UK, as her brother protects her and gave her a diplomatic position so she could get a resident visa.

I remember being so angry with him in the early 1990s for - as I saw it then - fence-sitting over Saddam, when we'd assumed him to be pro-western. Looking back, he took his position most wisely; being well-aware of the role that even undesirable figures like Saddam had (and as we saw later, Gadaffi), in helping to keep the region stable. Time proved his wisdom when the West became increasingly embroiled in the region - leading to the shocking mess we've seen over the past 20-something years. That he picked Abdullah to inherit from him was another wise action. News reports back then seemed to indicate his brother the Crown Prince would inherit - or his son by his most recent wife, Queen Noor. But Abdullah has proved his father's faith in him was entirely justified.

I personally think the Greek Woman was the smartest. She made it clear she was not relying on his finances, to raise her daughter. She gave her daughter freedom to choose as well. I met Princess Latifa, the first daughter of the King of Saudi Arabia in the 1990s, a couple of time when I worked for a famous photographer in Los Angeles. She came in twice. The first time one of her security detail came into my office and asked me if I could get him a glass of water (he was stationed outside), and I said, Yes, and opened the door to the studio, and told him, the water dispenser was right inside the door. He explained that he isn't allowed to be in the same room with the Princess. Oh! I didn't know. So, I got him the water and told him if he needed anything at all, to please come to me and I will make sure he has it. We hired someone to do her hair and makeup, and she had a handheld mirror and she would look at me through it. When it was time for me to leave, as I had a school course I was taking, she smiled and waved to me through the mirror, and I waved back. She was very pretty. A little on the plump side, but nonetheless she was very pretty. She was sweet, but at the same time, she was like a spoiled child, but never rude. The second time she came for a photo shoot, she brought her two kids. This time, there were security in the studio, even though she was there, I believe it was because they were in charge of making sure the children were safe. Those little boys were adorable, but spoiled rotten, and they were destroying some of the giant rolls of paper that are used as backdrops and on the floor, and no one said anything to them about it. She was one of King Fahd's children.[1] Princess Latifa was the eldest daughter of King Fahd and Al Anoud bint Abdulaziz bin Musaed Al Jiluwi.
