He's got the most elastic voice. His voice expands from his diaphragm. Many other contemporary vocalists cannot expand their voice, and they convey emotion thru loud shouting.

This song was first written about the Missouri River and Chief Shenandoah of the Iroquois Indians of upstate NY, and was first sung by Canadian fur trappers. In recent years, claims to its 'traditional' history have been made by people in Virginia who want it to be about the Shenandoah Valley. Which it never was.

I recently saw a video of the Shenandoah area.A statue of liberty was seen in a front garden of a house nearby. Maybe they were reclaiming?

Going against all of the hysterical fanboys I have never rated this guy's singing , just a shouter , anything that requires clear controlled vocals and he is all at sea , I think the general opinions of his ability have a smack of the fairy tail Kings new clothes about it , or loud applause and all the wannabes just echo what they think they should say, the guy just is not in any way a great singer , maybe a fine shouting voice but little else, with that I await the usual howl of abuse for daring to designate a sacred cow.

@Wendy Joseph Van recorded this YEARS ago for the Sountrack to the PBS Documentary series "The Long Journey Home - the Irish in America". First of all - if you like traditional Irish music, with a touch of Americana, I HIGHLY recommend the CD or upload. Van does this piece with the Chieftains and a Gospel Choir from Toronto (shout out to my peeps 🇨🇦) which is beautiful. Other artists on the CD include Vince Gill, Sinead O'Connor, etc., but there are other pieces on this CD ( I've practically worn the coding off my copy, I've played it so much) which are tremendous. Also, the PBS series is, or was, up on KZbin and is well worth watching.

I don't know what you sycophants are hearing. He ripped this song to pieces and stuck it back together with sticky type. Just yapped it out incoherently and didn't sing the half of it. Horrible, horrible, horrible. Liam Clancy does the best version ever recorded.
