The poem by Patrick Kavanagh from which this song derives is sad and beautiful in in its own right. Based on the Irish ballad "The Dawning of the Day," "On Raglan Road" (the poem) was written for Hilda Moriarty, Kavanagh's great, unrequited love. In "Hilda," Kavanagh declares, "I shall die in a ditch / Like a dog or a bum / Poet dead in a ditch / Unless you come." Van Morrison's rendition captures this dark side of Kavanagh's poem as well as its thwarted passion.

Many, many decades ago (nineteenth century), a Catholic man from Limerick went on a business trip to Belfast and met a Protestant lass who stole his heart. They had to go to this new land called America to be together. Their spirit still lives on in my Irish-German soul. Listening to Van & the Chieftans perform this song sends chills to me. T

Van's dynamic range on this is impressive, in his typical way. Belting out at nearly shouting level one minute, whispering the next, but it all feels so natural. Also love the use of brushes and the sparse, almost hypnotic drumming he adds to the performance. And of course the Chieftains deliver as usual. I keep coming back to this video over and over. Wish there was a better audio quality version.

Yes, you've said it perfectly. I met him once, nearly 50 years ago, and attempted to convey it, but of course it came out all wrong, as normally happens when you meet someone who has affected you profoundly. He said, "Far out." I mean what could he say? 😀

This live performance of Raglan Road by Van is absolutely sublime. As much as I love Luke's version, and undoubtedly Luke's rousing ballad singing style is quite simply the best there is, the tone and timbre of Van's voice here makes this version of Raglan Road, in my opinion, the best there is.

I am a Canadian whose paternal ancestors are all Irish. Most of them from Monaghan, as far as I know. Most of them leaving the Belfast Harbour in 1839. Is this why I happen to believe Van Morrison's voice is beyond anything I have ever heard or will ever hear in my lifetime? Is this why, regardless of how many walls I have put up to protect my battered heart he just comes sailing through them all? Could anything that isn't love do this?

Maurice Dickson also has a beuatiful version of this song. I recommend. But van Morrisson is a genious. As a matter of fact, We share the same base of musical and poetic culture, wich emerged around the north sea basin centuries ago. Patrick Kavanagh was originally a farmer from Co. Monaghan and moved to Dublin and lived at one point on Ragland Road. This is where he met Hilda Moriarty originally from Dingle, Co.Kerry. She moved to Dublin and lived on Raglan Road in 1944.She was studying to be a physician. The poem Ragland Road was inspired by her. When they met She was 22 and he was 40. She thought of Patrick only as a friend. This has more to do with a age gap. Dr. Hilda Moriarty married someone else and was in practice in Co. Limerick. Slan

This was the first occasion I saw Van on TV. He appears like a slightly shabby Literature teacher, and performs the song from the rear of the stage. I love Van's music. I grew up on it. I'm Irish. I bopped to Brown-eyed Girl as a Dublin teenager. His total body of work was a release and an inspiration to me. I still listen to him, my adult daughters listen to him. But he his an incomplete human being, a man who lacks the capacity to engage or trust others. A man who holds his audience in contempt. He is a monumental, elemental, example of a paranoiac. And even if I'm not a shrink - if it's not obvious to others, then....

To everyone dissing Van, mind that he is a blues/soul singer having his first run in traditional music, plus he was past his prime vocally at this point and still did an excellent job singing it while drumming. True musical genius he is, and Luke Kelly, but cut this fish out of water some slack, he did better than nearly anyone else

***** I use the word "evil" lightly, but he is mean & rude to his paying audience/fans - heck many times I've seen him in concert he just turns his back to the crowd and does what he wants. He could sing the phone book and I would eat it up.!

Not evil, just suffers from major stage fright. When he played with The Band, they practically had to push him out on stage because he was so nervous, but he ended up being the show stopper, absolutely epic performance, something not unexpected from Van the Man

+Michael Mitchell - chilling indeed. Van Morrison has an almost haunting effect on me at times, as in this song/performance, where he takes me places I would never have been, otherwise. God bless Mr. Morrison, grouchiness and all. He's one of the greatest musicians of our time!

@@vanmorrisonofficial-_ Not yet, but we will make it happen/get to one. There’s many tracts untapped, brand new (for me) that it’s astounding any artist can create a library, but especially one so vast and varied. My Dad told me about the newly released album @ just a year and a half ago, still need to pick that one up . 2024 will be the year, checking for a touring schedule, right now, in fact, so thank you for commenting

On Raglan Road on an Autumn Day, I saw her first and knew That her dark hair would weave a snare That I may one day rue. I saw the danger, yet I walked Along the enchanted way And I said let grief be a falling leaf At the dawning of the day. On Grafton Street in November, We tripped lightly along the ledge Of a deep ravine where can be seen The worst of passions pledged. The Queen of Hearts still baking tarts And I not making hay, Well I loved too much; by such and such Is happiness thrown away. I gave her the gifts of the mind. I gave her the secret sign That's known to all the artists who have Known true Gods of Sound and Time. With word and tint I did not stint. I gave her reams of poems to say With her own dark hair and her own name there Like the clouds over fields of May.

Van the Man can inflect his voice so well, and put power into the music. I remember Irish traditional music during the 60s and 70s - it was so flat, no personality at all - it was no wonder that young people gravitated to rock-n-roll. Thin Lizzie did a great job of bringing trad music into the modern age, as does van the man here, so let's ignore John McCrea - either he is part of that old expressionless Irish generation, or else he doesn't understand artistic interpretation.
