Usually when smallmouth miss the Whopper Plopper they are just bumping it, sometimes clear out of the water. You will notice if you watch closely that they often don't even have their mouths open when they do this, I think they are just curious and checking it out or possibly trying to stun whatever it is. If you don't set the hook and just keep reeling they will often come back around and hit again. Don't set the hook till you feel them, just ignore what you see, lol!

Gotcha. It seemed odd for them to keep hitting it but not hooking up. We’ll try that next time. Thanks!

We named our new boat Hubert George McGreggory IV based off one of the responses. Although Tippy Canoe is a GREAT name for our current boat. 🤣

Ok mann. I recognize that eagle in your opening shot. We fed it 4 years ago. 4 times in an hour. Unethical yes. But a blast. The eagle had been watching us. We caught a little bass. We paddled over to shore. My brother got out on a rock. The eagle flew closer and landed 30 ft away. I started the film rolling because wd had tried this on a fly-in trip and missed the shot. So my brother cut the fishes throat. Put his knife away. Turned his back on the fish and before he had a foot in the boat. The eagle swept up the fish. Flew to the nearest island. We continued to fish. And the eagle returned. We quickly caught another bass. I dropped my brother off on shore. He again dispatched the fish. Then just stepped back 6 feet. And swoosh. The eagle did not hesitate. It even said thank you on its way back to the same island. 5 minutes later we caught a bass but did not see the eagle. We put it back up on the same rock and started fishing. A few minutes later . We herd a swoosh and turned to see the eagle had come in from the back side. 5 minutes later it returned. We set the fish on a rock out on the water from the canoe. I attemoted to get the fish between me and the eagle. But it had shifted trees. And it shifted the angle. I was the camera man. But my brother did end up in a direct line so the eagle was coming right at him. He was only 6 feet from the fish. I havent gotten to that current on Crooked lake. But did have fun in the mouth of the bay inside of Wednesday bay. Topwater walley at dusk. Lol. And fun on Iron lake. Even your great pancakes will be improved with jus add water krustys pancake mix. Plus a little scoop of powder buttermilk and squeeze parkay butter and oure maole syrup. YUM YUM...

That’s an amazing experience. It’s great to see them out there in the numbers we do. We’ve never had one that landed that close. Powdered buttermilk and krusteaz sounds delicious. Definitely trying that!

My brother and i fished mostly for walleye the first thirty years. The last 10 years has been 95% topwater smallmouth bass fishing in early june. The bass start spawning when the water temps reach 60-63. They mostly spawn in the rubble right next to shore. Hit every pocket and rock. And let it sit 5 seconds. Give it a twich and wait 5. Give it a big pop and pause. And repeat for 4 hours. Start well before sunrise. Skip breakfast and yes coffee. Snickers work great. Calm water is a must. Once the sun rises. Shade is critical but not required. Hit every log especially if it is in the sun. I have documented 13 ways a fish can hit topwater. Early on we used floating rapala and the red and white toroedo. The torpedo easily got more action then the rapala. But only has a 30% hookup rate. A short fat very small crank bait also works well. Especially if the breeze creates a ripple. Then one year my brother brought up some "Rebel Teeny Pop-r. Not the full size pop-r. Color doesn't seem to matter. But the lurevwith the orange mouth is much easier to see. Especially when the fish misses the lure and leaves a bunch of bubbles. Bring at minimum 6 lures. You will get camut off 10 times in 4 days. 45% of the time the lure will be sitting there. 15% of the time the lure will be shacken by the leaping fish or come floating to the surface. Spawning bass are inconsistent. Sometimes they will inhale the lure. Sometimes they eject water at it to push it away. If you drop a jig or worm on the nest. They might pick it up and drop it iff the nest. Much of the bwca us too brown to see the nests. I had never seen a nest until a few years ago when i did a fly-in trip to a crystal clear lake. I could see the nest from the float plane ar 30ft up. I could see the fish on the nest from 100ft away and 10ft down. They would ignore a crankbait. They would slowly rise to hit a popper. And they would push a worm to the side of the nest. If the water is cold and tbe fish are still in 3-10ft of water. A mepps is excellent. Size 4 for bass and size 5 for northerns . Every trip we catch a couple 10lb plus nothern on the pop-r Our best trip was 220 topwater basd in 4 days. Were were in Quetico. So no barbs. Any fish that had a solid hook set we bassically counted as a fish caught. Maybe try a smaller whopper plopper. Make sure hooks are razor sharp. There is a much cheaper chineese version you can by on ebay. Maybe we can trade some fushing spots. I have fished almost exclusively in Quetico. But would like to get back to Crooked and try Basswood. And definitely learn how to fish in September . We avoid summer. Too hot and too many types of biting flies. And would like to learn about ice out to june 1st fishing

Thanks for this info. I know it takes a lifetime to gather and we appreciate every tip. I’ll have to get up early and give this a shot during our June trip. Maybe our May trip if they’re biting. And it really boggled us why we would see the fish breach but not hook up. It made no sense to us. They’re so fun to fish for on top waters. Love the comment about snickers 😆. Breakfast of champions

What size spinning reels and what size and type of line do you use ? Great video by the way. I've been up 3 times total, 2 with Boy Scouts back in the 80's and one time in the early 90's with a buddy. Planning a Knife Lake trip a year from this September. Can't Wait!

Hi Gregory Thomas! Thank you for the compliment and we hope you enjoy your trip later this year! We did an opening weekend trip last month and had an amazing time. Working on the video now. We typically bring up 4 rods, each with a Shimano 2500 reel (either Sahara, Sedona or Vanford) We use 8lb mono on all of them except I use 8lb Spirderwire on my walleye set up. Let us know how your trip went in September at info@portagemule.com

@@portagemule Excellent! I’m a Shimano guy! I’ve got an Ultegra 3000 that i’ll take and will find probably a sahara 2500 to add to my stash between now and then. Do you have any ‘recommended equipment’ videos already done or in the plans?
