Always wear your life jackets. The one time in 40 years of paddling we did not have our jackets on. We flipped

Glad you guys are ok. The humor of the 'tootsie roll' and 'same walleye' edits added great levity to that situation. You're the type of guys I hope to run into up there this year!

Thank you! It was quite the ordeal, we’ll go into much more detail in part 2. We kind of had one of those “well now what do we do” moments as we took stock of everything I couldn’t believe it when I was editing and I saw the Tootsie Roll. 😆 Of course the Tootsie Roll made it

Impressive haul! I'd love to have a day or two of walleye fishing like that! Thankfully no portage mules were harmed and everyone was safe. Thanks for sharing the success and the accident - both good to learn from. Good luck on your trips this season!

@@portagemule I paddled the mississippi and I had a moment of indecision which could have led to a very dangerous situation. Luckily I stayed upright and corrected the issue but things happen so quickly. Glad you made it back to shore and everything was "ok"

Great content guys! Been going to the BW for 25 years, and usually multiple trips per year. You guys are hilarious😂 I really enjoy how you put together the videos. A trip can turn bad just that quick, especially in cold water. After 25 years and even more trips, I’m lucky to say I haven’t dumped in the middle of the lake. Only once at the landing of our campsite, and it was warm. I look forward to your next video!

Thank you very much! We enjoy making them and really appreciate the feedback. That was our first time dumping a canoe too. “It’ll never happen to us” right… We’ve had the occasional slip in at the portages and maybe a floating bag or too 🤪 but nothing like this! Part II will be out soon!

Put a rope on the front thwart an rear thwart. Let the bow out far enough to catch the current. It will move away from shore as you pull it up stream. The rear rope will aid in control. You can use this same technique while getting your boat onto a trailer by yourself . Wrap duct tape around on over the top of your bait bucket. It will keep the water cooler and the fish will be less stressed by the sun
@portagemule7 ай бұрын
Words of wisdom, thank you! Keeping the bait bucket cooler during the way in would be great

Looks like the walleye fishing was pretty decent! I tipped one time with my older brother in the boundary waters, we had literally only gotten maybe 2 miles into our trip that my friend and I often took, after tipping my brother wouldn't cross Seagull.....probably for the best, that's a big lake to cross and I wasn't exactly comfortable with him after that, lost a lot of gear but at least my brother was ok. Glad you guys made it out! What about the anchor though??? looking forward to part 2!
@portagemule9 ай бұрын
The fishing was amazing. And it even gets better after the flip! Lake crossings can be sketchy. I’ve had a few times with white caps that made us very nervous. I tried dragging the boat up first only to remember the anchor was still attached. I had to swim to the back of the boat and cut the line and then drag it!

Do you guys just prefer minnows over leeches? A block of cheese for those sandwiches will be a good idea for next time! Great video, you make the fishing look so easy
@portagemule9 ай бұрын
The minnows seem to work better. We bring leeches as well and use them once we run out of minnows. The minnows are a lot of work packing them and making sure to change their water frequently on the way in.

Professional tip.... Take the extra rods and put them BEHIND the person in the back of the canoe. Put the butt of the rod under the seat and point the rod tip straight out the back of the canoe. On top of the net isn't a great place for that second rod. How did you deal with the anchor rope??
@portagemule9 ай бұрын
That’s the solution right there. Out of the way is much better than over the side! I’ll explain it better in part II but I had to swim to the back of the boat, cut the anchor line with a pocket knife, and then swim the canoe up to shore. Luckily the anchor line was long enough that there was probably 10 feet of it floating on the surface when we returned.

Yes, last year on the Kiwishiwi Triangle. Landed a 26 inch Northern while trolling. We are heading back again in September. We are heading in on Mudro and likely going as far as Beartrap. Great video! Be well.
@rob34609 ай бұрын
Well there are some monster Northern in bear trap. Good luck getting the campsite that's not at the Portage.
@Dude626829 ай бұрын
We are going mid-September and entering on a Tuesday. Hoping traffic is way down by then. If it’s taken, we’ll take the short portage out to camp, and then portage in just to fish.
@danbeeding12799 ай бұрын
What rod/reel setup do you each use?
@portagemule9 ай бұрын
That's a great question. Rob was using the Shimano vanford reel with the 13 fishing black omen 7'3 in rod. Ben was using a Shimano Sahara with a Fenwick HMG rod 7 ft rod. Both rods are medium light action. Our next trip out in May we’ll use new rods from 13 fishing since these ones took a beating during the boat flip. One of the lessons we learned from this is the BWCA it's not a place for super expensive equipment but rather reliable equipment.
@danbeeding12799 ай бұрын
@@portagemule I couldn't tell, were you guys able to recover all the rods/reels? Sounded like you lost a net and a couple cameras and some tackle. Or was that a teaser for the next video? Either way, you guys' videos are the best I've seen of boundary waters content and are really good watches.
@portagemule7 ай бұрын

@@portagemule That was freakin hilarious. I would've never believed that if you didn't have it all on video. Appreciate you guys sharing your content, it gets me through these months when I can't get up there to BWCA. We're hitting the Basswood area in June... hoping to get a spot near the falls but if we have to venture further into Crooked that wouldn't be the worst thing for our fishing trips.
