How to Destroy Wasp, Yellow Jacket Ground Nest Video - naturally using soap and water

How to destroy, get rid of an underground bee, wasp, yellow jacket nest using soapy water. No harmful pesticides needed - organic green method. Do it at night when the wasps aren't active. Get some dish soap, a water hose and some door screen (the door screen may not be necessary - but I don't like getting stung so I was ultra protective). Place the screen over the hole, squeeze a good squirt of soap down the hole and then shoot the water from the hose down the hole. I've used this several times and it always works.

The BEST/EASIEST way to deal with these kinds of wasp nests are to wait until dark, boil a big pot of water and pour in down the hole while they are asleep. Environmentally safe and very effective. Been doing this for 40 years and had 100% success.

I used this method on a ground nest of yellow jackets outside the front door of my sister-in-law's house. It worked perfectly. The weirdest thing was after I put the dishwashing liquid in and then poured the boiling water I could hear them buzzing underneath the ground so it must've been a big nest. Thanks for the tip!

Years ago whenever my parents found a nest of ground bees, it was always right near an area where they needed to be working on some sort of outdoor project. Since they needed to get to that area right away, what they would do is they would bring out the Shop Vac, lay the hose on the ground right by the hole of the nest & then turn on the Shop Vac. They never had to worry about getting stung because as soon as they came out of the hole, they got sucked up into the Shop Vac. I remembered this a couple years ago when we were having a new fence put in. The crew members came to the house asking if we had any spray because they ran across a ground bees nest right next to the area where they needed to put in a fence post. I told them of my parents little trick/tip so we hauled out the Shop Vac & they were able to get the fence done without having to worry about a single ground bee. :-) If you try this, though, make sure you let the vacuum run for a bit after it sucks up the last one just to make sure the last of the live bees suffocated. If you shut it off right after it gets sucked up, sometimes they don't die right away & will fly back out of the hose.

I had paper wasps that went into a crack at a corner where the wood met. Spraying didn't work as their nest apparently was not in direct line to spray. Apecide powder didn't work. So I noticed they would slow down, land and walk into the crevice. I set up two Shop Vacs with long extended rods set near the hole and walked away. I felt bad for my neighbors as I ran them at dusk for quite a while two consecutive evenings and you could see and hear the wasps being sucked into the Shop Vacs and then I sprayed into the Shop Vac hose. Poured Apecide into the hole and then sealed it.

Excellent technique! I've used dawn mixed in a hand-compressed sprayer very effectively for yellow jackets nesting in the ground. Great idea to add the screen for extra protection. Anyone trying this should remember that this should only be done at night; also, yellow jackets often pick old rodent burrows to nest in and these usually have one or two additional entry ways for escape. Put a screen over these too if you can find them. But be careful looking during the day- yellow jackets often have sentries guarding the entryways, and they will investigate you and possibly sting if you stay long enough. Happy hunting!

One afternoon, while attempting to play a game designed for calmer temperaments than I possess, my golf ball landed “in” the opening of a nest, in the fairway of the 3rd hole. Not realizing this valuable tidbit, I walked right up to the offending ball and the unamused occupants, lying in wait. It was then, that I suffered the vindictive rage of a colony of yellow jackets, who’s numbers rivaled the population of China (my estimation). I’ll spare you the details, but for over four satisfying minutes, I relaxed and cheered on the hose in this video, with gusto. I would have preferred a tiny guillotine demonstration, or individual live dissections, but time constraints didn’t allow. That said, I thank you from the bottom of my heart, for this quality entertainment ! This was more therapeutic than the year of anger management counseling I was ordered to attend, after seeking several illegal forms of retaliation, at the course. I got away with the gasoline, the first and second night. But, on the third night, the explosives apparently alerted neighbors. Country Clubs don’t like that. 😁

I get about a half-pound of dry ice from the local grocery store, put it in a green muck tub, and put the tub upside down over the hole. The CO2, being heavier than air, seeps into all the nooks and crannies of the nest and suffocates all the insects, without leaving any toxic residue or mess behind.

Consider yourself lucky. They usually have another exit and have sentinels in the grass nearby at night. I know this because I found out the hard way. On another note, you can also take a handful of Seven Dust and toss into the hole. As they enter and leave the nest they become contaminated with it and then contaminate the nest and it eventually kills them off. Not as fast, but less work.

Thanks for the tip! In your case it was very easy with such a large opening. I had to eradicate few nests and every time it's different. If it's under bricks, it might be hard to identify entrance or they might have several. I put on my "bee suit" and used water+detergent method during the day. That actually worked as I was pouring it in and removing bricks at the same time. When I got to the actual nest I dozed it with some wasp killer spray and fortunately got the queen. Workers showed up for few days after but then disappeared. Next year I had similar nest nearby so I tried "sevin" insecticide powder. I dusted half container above entrance at night. There were few wasps patrolling in the dark! Next morning I saw something I couldn't believe. One two of them were flying out holding something in their feet. They were EVACUATING. I never heard about wasps doing that. But there was no-one back there after that...

From another video I saw, you don't need to cut a slit in the screen. The soap will get through it just fine, just blast the water and fill up the nest. Add more soap as needed to make it foam up more.

Tonight was night 3 of my war with a huge yellowjacket nest. They came out & went in 3 per second so there are a lot. The 1st night I sprayed aerosol spray thinking it would reach the nest then piled dirt onmthe openings. didnt work. Last night my son held the light while I sprayed & dug. I thought they couldnt see at night but with a flashlight on it wasnt night & he got stung. I never found the nest. Tonight I tried dish detergent & water. After an hour I decided to use the shovel & see if I could find the nest. I hit a huge void. I heard what sounded like a plane flying. Then I realized it was from the ground. Then the stings & I ran into the house bringing 4 wasps in my clothing - to the condemnation of the rest of the family. I went back out, took a look. A few were flying around irritated. I turned the hose on higher & will leave it on all night. I lost another battle but maybe morning will bring victory.

Thanks for this! I have a rather large hive in my yard and am deathly allergic to bees/wasps and have pets that roam around the yard. I was reluctant to use pesticides and this is a perfect solution. I do think they might have an alternate exit so I'll cover that as well with the screen just in case! Edit: After reading up a bit more on ground bee habits I might just use water and not soap. Supposedly this will make them move to another place. If they don't move along then it's soap time!

Tunapaw, I'm also deathly allergic to stinging insects; bees, hornets, wasps, yellow jackets, bumble bees, etc... All of them. I have a bee nest in the ground next to my grill/patio. The nest is active and I can't get near it. I've been stung recently by this nest. I don't want to kill them, but they gotta go. I'll try the water hose at night using your screen method. @@tunes5077 I wish I could say that the water hose worked, it didn't. Neither did the soap/water. In the end I had to use expanding foam unfortunately which did work. The hornets now live in my neighbors lawn that they never ever cut so it's manageable. Please please wear heavy canvas type pants and jacket with no holes they can fly into, use duct tape. Do what you need to when it's as cold as it gets at night. You do not want to get swarmed and die! Good luck my friend. It's you or them haha.

Man I just wrecked this wasp nest in my front yard like a secret agent at 4 am. Not just any normal wasps, these things were like 2 inches long. Nasty suckers. Had 3 main holes to their hive a couple feet apart. So I had it all planned out. In a 30 second period, I plugged one with a scoop of dirt, stomped it down, poured like a pint of lighter fluid down the second so the fumes would suffocate them, stomped it down with a hand full of dirt, and then poured a gallon of water mixed with a lot of hand soap down the third before running my ass off. +Snipahkiller03 you just go at night. They aren't flying in and out anymore. Just be careful not to stomp the ground and wake them up. If you use gasoline, then none of the wasps ever make it out of the hole alive. If you are allergic it would be best to ask someone else to do it for you, but i have never seen any of them make it out of the hole. Even if they did, you are plugging the hole with the bottle, so they would just fly into the bottle.

I guess the negative comments are from people who have never stumbled on a nest and gotten stung. You need to control these insects around your home. People, children included, and pets have died when they disturbed these nests. Lighter fluid and gasoline also work but I think soapy water is safer.

Suggestions for improvement: 1. Either put your dawn in a garden sprayer, then cut the slit put the nozzle of the sprayer over the hole - no need to cut a slit in the screen. Put a brick on the hose/sprayer to hold it in place, THEN go turn on the water. OR 2. My method - after dark set up your screen using 3 bricks. Return to the safety of your house. Pour your bottle of dawn in a 5-gallon bucket. Boil some water on the stove. Fill the bucket with boiling water. Agitate to create foam (I use my drill and a paint mixer). Go back outside and with a red headlamp, pour the steaming mixture over the hole - bricks act as a funnel. If you want to you can pour a second or even a third bucket of boiling water down the hole. Bees can’t come out due to uncut screen/foam.) Place a heavy rock over the hole.

My only suggestion is wear gloves, so your hands don't get stung. Some wasps are active at night. So be prepared if they do appear at night. No flip flops or sandles should be worn when doing this job.

Yellow Jackets have multiple entrances/exits for their hive, an average of 3 to 5 per nest each can lead up to 10 ft from the main hive. An average/established hive less than a season old can house easily 20,000+ yellow jackets as they are very prolific. Also, yellow jackets ARE active at night. At any given time there are 100 - 1,000's yellow jackets out of the hive at any given time...day or night. Because yellow jackets are very "maternal" shall we say, once the hive's adult population killed off, there are still many scouts (out and about) who will (and I do promise you), will return and attempt to care for the eggs, and larva. They will also begin preparing to create a new Queen. So, attacking one entrance/exit and doing one application will not work. I does however, give you a false sense that you have conquered them, when in truth you have not. In reality, you are potentially putting yourself, your loved ones or your pets in danger of future attacks. Do your research.

Keepercreek IS correct. They do have back doors. I have seen nests over 6 ft long with what you could call hidden doors under brush and leaves. Yellow Jackets are a real threat. I was stung ALL OVER my face and body. :( So many came out that they completely covered the weed eater which i had dropped while running and screaming with my hands in the air like Kermit the Muthafucking frog. There had to been thousands.. they filled the air of my entire front yard.. about half an acre or a tad less.

The soap melts their Chitin.. the wax that makes up their exoskeleton.. so yes it works. The best way is to actually mix Dawn and water in a bucket and pour it in.. that way you know that you have coated them all.

My husband didn't see a Yellowjackets hole, and he ran over the area with a belly mount bush hog on the tractor. He got stung once, and turned the tractor off, started running for the house, and you could actually see a trail of the Yellowjackets coming after him. He made it through the door of our screened in porch, with a few getting in with him. We had bought a few of those little bug "tennis racket" looking bug zappers a few years ago, and they kept breaking so easily. I got tired of the things breaking, and I thought the voltage needed to be amped up, so I made my own version. I too an old metal tennis racket that needed new strings, and turned it into a much more sturdy, and more powerful bug zapper. I was glad I decided to make the "Schwarzenegger" zapper. I took down the ones that managed to get in the door behind him, and I don't thing the little plastic things would have stopped them. I've never seen Yellowjackets in KILL mode before! My husband has been stung by wasps/Yellowjackets before, but never this many at once. I sat him down, ran to our closet, a got our med kit to start treating the bites, but when I got back to the den, his eye lids were puffy, and his face was swelling a little. He didn't have any difficulty breathing...yet. I immediately forgot about the bites. He is 6'3", and wgt about 255, so I gave him Benadryl 100 mg, Zyrtec 10 mg, Zantac 150mg, and Prednisone 20 mg orally, loaded him in the truck, and headed for the ER. At normal speed, we are only about 20 min from the ER, but I made it in half the time. They took him to a room, removed his clothes, and I immediately counted at least 8 stings on his face, head, and neck. I told the staff what I had given him, how long it had been, and they dosed him with Epinephrine right away. They also gave him a dose of IV Corticosteroids. I only had the oral Prednisone at the 20 mg dose at home, he needed more IVP. Thank God, his swelling stopped, and he never developed any airway swelling. The ER doc asked why I didn't call 911, and I told him that my husband needed treatment right away. I explained that we live out in the country, but only 20 min from the hospital. If I had called 911, it would have taken the ambulance at least 15 minutes to get to the house. The ER doc asked me, "how did you know the medication, and dose to give him at home, are you a nurse?" I said, " No, I'm sorry you must be one of the new docs that Perry hired. I've been on vacation for a month, trying to get moved into our new house, so Perry has been in charge of things." He looked at me like I was crazy, and said, "I think you are still a little shook up over yours husbands allergic reaction, because your not making any sense. How does my being new here, and Dr. Perry hiring me, have anything to do with what I asked you about the medications you gave your husband?" I laughed, and said, "Yes, my husband's ordeal was intense, and I sorry to confuse you." I stuck out my hand and said, "Hello Dr. XX, I am Dr. BTS....your boss." Perry walked up as I was introducing myself, laughed at the look on Dr XX's face, and said "she will be back in a couple of weeks. Smile boy, you just help save your boss's husband; you already racked up Brownie points!" Life can be strange at times!!
