This channel will never ever be forgotten, no matter that his website is now unfortunately down. This youtube channel will live for ever, it has to. It's so heartbraking that he never finished the project he set out to complete, but the fact that we have all of Bach's early cantatas is such a gift, along with almost all his motets/orchestral/harpsichord/organ music etc.

You are correct, it isn't easy but I enjoy every bit of time and effort animating in these great compositions as (I assume) Bach did when he composed them over 300 years ago. My only regret is that, since this is an earlier animation, I would have done with the added knowledge I've gained since last year. But judging from the views I don't think anyone minds. Thank you for your comment William and I hope to post more videos for you to enjoy in the near future.

In my opinion, that opening sonatina is one of the most beautiful pieces ever written- quite plaintive but with a hopeful undertone sonorously combined in a complex way typical of Bach's genius. À mon avis, cette sonatine au début est une des pièces les plus belles jamais composées - assez funèbre mais avec une nuance qui est plein d'espoir et arrangée sonorement d'une façon complexe qui est typique du génie de Bach.

I am speechless before this ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE. I have listened to this version for decades, and every time I listen to it I am blown away. I wish that this Cantata can be played at my funeral. The vocal soloists are unsurpassed. The words are profound. The music is sublime. The musicians are at the top of their shape. That day, many years ago, when all these people got together to perform this piece, a miracle happened. Perhaps Bach was disguised as Gustav Leonhardt. In one simple Cantata, Bach towered over all his predecessors, his contemporaries and future composers.

Thanks. I love so much the 106. I studied it and your rendition brings me back at school time, digging the subtleties it bears. Makes me regret of being agnostic, thus not benefiting of the consolation this work can possibly give to the believers. BTW here are the lyrics of the instumental chorale played during "Ja Komm, Herr Jesu" (9:20): "I have left all that concerns me up to God./Let him do whatever he wants with me./If I continue to live on here/I will surrender myself to his will."

I think that "Es ist der alte Bund: Mensch, du musst sterben" should be translated as "It is the old covenant: man you must die" instead of the "old law". And it does make all the difference theologically, I think! Because it is only with the new covenant that "Man, you must die" is overcome by Jesus' sacrifice so that we receive eternity. :)
@gerubach8 жыл бұрын
You are absoulutly right Lusia. My apologies for this mistranslation. As you can see I do not know German and this is one example of many mistakes in my animations. Back in 2011, translating Bach cantatas was a very new process to me. Now I consult and compare 3 different translation sources when creating English subtitles. I prefer to to stick more to the literal meaning of German words but at times I have to bend the translation because it might need more clarification. A good example is how Bach used the word "Holz" (wood) instead of "Kreuz" (cross). It is quite a chore to do this but viewer input does help me immensely. Thank you for your post.

In a sense it is a pity that Bach came later under influence of the Italianate operatic style with its succession of recitatives and da capo arias. The early works have a much more varied structure more suited to the meaning of the texts.

I would like to play the alto recorder part, but it seems that the recorder part is played one octave deeper than the score indicates. Does anybody know more about this?
@ArEightSix7 жыл бұрын
This piece actually called for "voice flutes" or recorders pitched in E-flat, a whole step below the ordinary alto recorder. Recorders pitched in other keys besides F and C existed back then, and Bach scored for them too. The cantata BWV 71, which gerubach also animated, appears to call for similar instruments from what I can tell. A friend and I played the recorder parts in this piece many many years ago, but since we had no access to voice flutes, we were forced to use alto recorders and rewrite a few passages. It's a shame we had no other choice.

The problem with seeing the score for me is that it raises an irreverent question. Not only is “Herr” repeated times numberless, but consider the following: O Jesu, komm nur bald! . . .Ach, fliehe nicht so bald von mir! Dein Abschied und dein . . .Bald zur Rechten, bald zur Linken . . . bei Christo bald zu weiden. . . Ach, schlage doch bald >>>>>>> Is there anything but skin under the wigs we see in the composer’s portraits?

A stunningly beautiful work, yes, but in my opinion *slightly* overrated in comparison to many other of Bach's more dynamic early cantatas, despite this being by far the most well-known of all his early cantatas.
