History
The BX Heidelberg locomotives of the Royal Bavarian State Railways were express 2-4-0 steam engines with an inside frame, cylinders behind the carrying axle, and front-mounted steam pipes. They featured twelve compound engines, with two initially simple engines converted to compound in 1896. Mainly used for passenger services on Bavarian mainlines, they had spacious ash boxes and advanced steam distribution systems. Despite their innovative design, operational difficulties, particularly during startup, were notable. Modifications improved performance, but challenges remained. These locomotives significantly contributed to efficient rail transport and technological advancements in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
