Renathal is a trap, but it's a FUN trap. I think it's less of a trap in Reno decks if only because card consistency being bad is part of the deck being a Reno deck. At best, the non-Reno deck has two copies of its best 15 cards normally, now it'll have two copies of the best 20. Generally, the quality difference between the best 15 cards and the 16th-20th best card will be higher than the quality difference between the best 30 cards and the 31st-40th one.
@SuperAmazingJared
@SuperAmazingJared 2 жыл бұрын
yeah, but you also reduce the consistency of drawing the reno cards, so the payoff is less worth it
@sacwingedbatsatadbitsad4346
@sacwingedbatsatadbitsad4346 2 жыл бұрын
That's true in standard but not in wild. Most decks have 20-25 mandatory cards and have to maintain a certain ratio such as miracle priest needing to have at least 2 cheap spells for each minion or reno priest needing to have cheap removal to offset the expensive raza, loatheb, reno, shadowreaper mandatory top-end. This means that you often can't include the 30th best card which would be an expensive tech card, say battlecry loatheb to beat shudder shaman, you have to include a suboptimal cheap card, say holy smite, to maintain that ratio instead. Same with 29th, 28th, etc. With ren you can put in the expensive tech cards to auto-beat slower decks without cutting all your early game and auto-losing to aggro. Now, this really only makes sense for classes that can both draw the extra cards and have enough mana cheat to play the extra cards, so pretty much priest, rogue, and druid exclusively. It can also counterintuitively increase consistency, for example, in a 30-card miracle priest, you would have to cut a cheap cycle spell to include the 3 3/4 naga that tutors the handmaiden and priestess, not happening, you might draw it a turn or two earlier on average, but more often than not you'll just be sitting on an inactive handmaiden for those 1-2 turns anyway. With renathal, even though the deck is 10 cards bigger, the naga tutor card still about doubles the chance of finding handmaiden early because not only are you twice as likely to hit it naturally, but you're also twice as likely to hit it off insight which is huge with the small minion pool, and you can still activate it because you maintained the ratio of spells to minions.
@bornagainbear

In music the gathering this is an old logic problem that goes similar to the donator in chat laid it out. Since Mtg was 60 card minimum decks with no max, people needed to make the decision on if they should go to 61/62 cards to fit in tech cards or even higher for reasons. If you want to put the best available cards in your deck and start with them, then the 31st card is worse than the 30th and reduces the chance you draw the better cards. Everytime you draw that 31st card was a chance to have drawn a different, better card. However in hearthstone, where games regularly go to fatigue, renethal makes sense in exactly the kinda Decks that run it: large mid range or control that want the 10 extra hp and anti fatigue tech vs other control decks.

Your thoughts on Renethal are entirely correct. The best example I could give for a comparison is Yorion in MTG. Upside: you start the game with an extra card in hand that’s always there that can be synergized with. Downside, you have to run at least 20 extra cards in your deck (in a 60 card game, the ratio is exactly the same as Renethal). There are very, very few decks that run Yorion, and those that do are only in formats where cantrips are extremely powerful, card quality is high enough, and card effects are replaceable enough, that you can justify the increased inconsistency (IE Legacy Jeskai Yorion). Renethal’s upside is definitely weaker and more situational, so I doubt it’ll see a ton of play outside of for fun. However, Yorion and Renethal decks are both extremely fun to build, so it’ll probably be a Wild staple still.

I think some of the evaluation of the "Start with more cards in your deck" comes from people not quite realizing how rare it is that you actually draw and play every card in your deck. It can kind of feel like "Oh, if I add 10 more anti-aggro cards to my deck without taking anything else out, I'm better against aggro". But except in very few matchups you don't play all the cards in your deck, you play the first 10 or 15 or however many that you actually draw. So it's not as obvious that "total amount of cards your deck can play" is a much smaller deal than "average card quality of the first X cards you see" Also kind of interesting to compare with Elysiana, where it's bad in the aggro matchup but useful in slow mirrors but has the benefit of being one bad card in your deck vs fast decks instead of being ten bad cards in your deck.

I believe you can apply the same logic as in YGO with Renathal: If your deck has some number of bricks, and adding Renathal allows you to reduce the proportion of bricks in your deck, it is worth considering including him. If you have 5 bricks in your 30 card deck, thats a 1/6 chance for any given card being a brick. If you use Renathal, you reduce the chance to 6/40 -> 15%. ...obviously if you have just one brick, you increased your chances of drawing one now. Assuming that Spider Tanks count as bricks

I was fiddling with a Reno Tesspionage Cutless deck when the Prince was revealed and released. I added him in for fun, and he is exactly that. There are some matches he is an advantage, some he I s a disadvantage...but definitely overall he makes draw consistency worse. And I fully expected that, and don't care. He makes choices more skill intensive and games a lot more varied, and I've been having a blast. I normally finish a month at either legend or diamond 5 depending on my mood that month, and have been stuck at platinum. And I am perfectly fine with that because it is a lot of fun. I've been playing card games since Magic was originally released. There is a reason that game was changed from its original 40 card decks to 60b and a reason why balancing your mana curve, deck thinning, and knowing how to use card selection/scy effects well is so integral to being a good player. But there are also reasons why formats like Commander are so fun, and the Prince makes Hearthstone (which already has Commander elements) feel more like that. And when you cue into a Prince mirror...best Hearthstone ever. But he definitely makes most decks worse. He is only remotely playable because stuff like Dredge or the new Findlay have been printed (card selection tools) He almost feels like a test; to see if a 40/40 format would work (either new format, or change to Wild). It would potentially add extra balance to a format that has reached a critical mass of cards that everything is just way to fast and consistent. Slow aggro down, make decks a little less consistent, small buffer against some OTKs. I think I'd welcome this.

Besides the usually downside of worse cards in your deck, in games where fatigue and outlasting your opponent is the wincon, Renathal has an obvious advantage. The only reason you wouldn't factor this in is because of meta at the current rank you play at. Unless I'm missing something about the meta for each deck being ungodly strict, isn't there cases of cards NOT being the literal best possible? Like, aren't some cards about equal and can be swapped, in which case adding both when possible should be fine? Maybe I'm imagining a more balanced meta than what exists right now, but I never see this idea addressed, it's like everyone talking about renethal agrees on the idea that every single deck contains the absolute best possible cards and any card outside it would ruin it.

If you have a Reno deck with 30 cards, you're got a 1/30 chance to draw Reno (more if you count mulligan and the size of your starting hand) You play Reno decks to get the benefits of Zeph, Reno, Alex, Kaza, etc. At the cost of consistency (as a result of increased card variation.) A 40 card deck is less likely to draw the Reno cards that make your deck powerful. Otherwise, just play 2 copies of the best 12-14 nonlegendary cards and throw in the best legendaries.

In other card games such as ygo, having more cards than the minimum is 99 percent of the time detrimental, because it affects consistency and because you don’t want a lot of good cards, you build a deck around something and want to make it as consistent as possible and that requires to carry the minimum cards you can carry. If you need one specific card, having more cards in your deck makes it harder to draw, usually it would be 1/26 (in hearthstone at a starting hand) but if you had renathal your chances plummet to 1/36. Honestly it even feels weird for people to question the superiority of a small deck, I guess hearthstone players don’t know about this because they always had just 30, so they haven’t bothered as much with ratios and chances

I know Roffle spends a while talking about how the 40 card restriction is a downside and how the last 10 cards will “always” be worse than the first 30, but would it not be reasonable to counter by saying that the cards you add in those last positions could often be better than those main cards in certain matchups? If you’re up against a deck with little board presence, certain removal cards will be less valuable, and those will be the worst cards in your deck for that match. Obviously 40 cards will mean you can more often get screwed over by bad draws, and obviously you’d rather have only 30 cards in your deck for a lot of decks, but there are plenty of times where the cards you want in your deck are not the ones you have in that 30 card deck.

That's a matter of speech. One could argue that making a deck better at a few matchups at the cost of being worse at most matchups is still "always worse" as long you're thinking from the perspective of not having yet matched up. It's like asking if you'd rather take 1/4 or 1/2 win-or-lose bet. It's possible that a person who took the 1/4 won while a person who took the 1/2 lost, but taking the less likely is still "always" worse.

Hey Roffle. Seeing you argue about the new card all video makes me want to weigh in as an off and on mtg player for over 20 years: you are absolutely right about the fact that adding extra cards to your deck can make it harder to then draw the cards you’re wanting to draw when you draw them. It’s purely mathematical. Sure the extra health can make a difference in some decks but the key word there is some. It’s basically a card that’s neither good nor bad all the time but there are times where you’d want to include it in a deck if the deck calls for it. Very situational but can have use on occasion. I hope this helped the argument as I’m sure some people don’t see that there could be a downside and there’s probably some people that don’t understand the point being made and are arguing against the wrong facts or thinking you’re trying to say something that you’re not. Also great video. I’ve had an odd taunt warrior for a while for fun so I might have to update it now 😉

The one card that make sense to say more in the deck is better is aluneth. Which is useless if you don't find it / has been broken

Why would you need more cards in an aluneth deck? Isn't the whole point of that card to draw your deck fast?
@mr.senkai574
@mr.senkai574 2 жыл бұрын
@@xsas8731 you right in most deck drawing the key cards is a must. Except Aluneth deck have two problem the first one is to find those key cards. The second one is to dumps your hand. And so you have mostly draw cards and cheap stuff to dump. Making this deck draw faster with less key cards - > less cards' value. Where I am going is : 10 more do not make the value of the deck go down (kinda low from the start) and make you less worried for drawing to fast and lastly you have more key cards ( for the same ratio of dumping / key / drawing)

A big part of renathal being bad is that he's a spider tank, adding 9 cards and a spider tank to your deck makes it consistently worse. I was thinking about how pirate quest wants to avoid drawing patches and ankarr so diluting with pirates seems okay, but it's actually. See usually, you have two bad draws out of thirty, which is 1/15 to draw patches or ankarr. With renathal you have three bad draws out of forty, 13.3333 chance to draw patches ankarr, or renathal. And you get 9 lower quality pirates.

@calebgao6931 2 жыл бұрын
@@micahturner8297 sure as if baku does any good for this deck. Putting baku into a deck where you rarely press hero power is a bad idea already, on top of this deck building restriction you even have to fit 10 extra cards, that's why roffle lost the first game, the petty 2 extra armor gain is completely irrelevant. If roffle jam down a nzoth on curve with full boards of minion that rogue stands no chance. Even and odd is only good for aggro.

Milling in hs is so much different than other card games. Hs is so simple it doesnt have a real graveyard so a milled card isnt a benefit like almost every other card game you also usually get to pick which card is discarded in other games but hs has a hand limit to even holdin cards. It kinda makes sense chat doesnt like to see milled cards cus they can never be recovered. Also the argument for your top card being the same as your bottom cards you dont draw doesnt make much sense since dredge is a thing. Your deck isnt random its shuffled in an order you dont know, in other games you can look at your top couple of cards and shuffle or manipulate your library were hs jus added this with dredge and the old tracking from hunter.

24:45 This is true but with one caveat which is, even if the card is technically worse, the primary effect of the card is needed in such a quantity that it's better to have another similar card. Priest has a lot of big board clear cards, Plague of Death and Whirlpool are extremely similar cards but Plague of Death is the better one, however, if all you cared about was just removing the minions on the board then one could look at it as adding two more copies of a card that says "destroy all minions". If you needed more board clears but still needed other cards for a win condition then in that case having 40 cards could, COULD, be better than 30. However, I don't think such a meta would be very likely to come about, it would require a very specific set of circumstances for that to be the case.

22:40 [About 40 cards being a downside compared to 30 cards because of reduced quality of cards] So... yes and no. Often times, with meta decks, things get whittled down to about 32-35 "best cards", with the last 2-5 being cut not because of quality decisions, but personal meta judgement. "I don't need a second Viper this meta, I'll cut it down to 1 this time, and instead take a Mutanis" - stuff of that ilk. In a similar fashion, cards which are functionally identical for the purposes of your deck can start to be considered, if those were cut for deck space issues. "Oh, I cut Lightning Storm because Elemental Destruction is a better overload payoff" - adding a pair of Lightning Storms will do similar jobs, so including them is not appreciably worse overall. So often, you'll easily be able to find at least a few cards that would have fit in the deck without impacting consistency, just from including duplicates of one-ofs that were cut, or just doubling up on cards that already effectively were included. That said, yeah. Those bottom 5 cards are going to be strictly worse overall, just becausd they're likely to be tech cards for matchups that... aren't happening right now.
@EnderPryde
@EnderPryde 2 жыл бұрын
(And then there's those weird edge case of actually decreasing the likelyhood of "garnets" - cards you absolutely need in your deck to function but never actually want to draw - but that's such an outlier I dunno if it's even worth discussing. Recruit warrior is not what I'd call "meta")
@centor111
@centor111 2 жыл бұрын
Don't include a card if your justification is 'it helps against this one deck' unless the deck is more that 33% of your matchups. There is a difference between viper and other tech as well in that it is 1 mana to cycle. Also if you are struggling to fit the cards you want into a deck then your deck isn't streamlined or efficient to its goal. You should be getting to 25 and then thinking about what 5 filler cards you want. The only exception to this was like K&C/witchwood druid where you were trying to shove win conditions on top of your 20 card package.

You fool Roffle! You assume my decks are composed of the 30 best cards, but in fact, I have to make space for useless jank by removing good cards, giving me 10 extra slots simply means that I will be able to include the good cards i removed in the first place, therefore transforming prince renathal in a pure upside by making my average draws better.
