A quiet journey into the Burning Ship fractal. The fractal is significantly stretched, so I started the video from the point of stretching.

As metaphor this is interesting - as I search ever deep for my Self - what happens is beauty is encountered a long the way - yet the search continues ever deeper - I never found a self down there I call that region The Ocean Beneath the Sea - the beauty created along the way - gives me a sense of the self that created it. I like the Burning Ship fractal because it is more linear and looks more like a computer chip than other fractals. However, it is infinite.

Kai Krause (MetaCreations) had software in the 90s for fractals and I recall being absolutely obsessed and spending hours and hours with it around work and raising two kids. Love of that eventually led to hot glass and I built a studio but fractals were the beginning of that exploration. Your videos really take me back, love your work!

Generally, one does not view fractal mathematics in that form. What you call fractals are just human viewable forms of complex plane n-dimensional math blitted onto a 2 dimensional screen. However, if you want to think visually: then yes, the so called "archetypes" of fractal patterns are often contained within many different formulas.

The complex plane is mathematically annoying yet intuitionally easily understood. In the most simple terms, complex or imaginary numbers are simply the logic complete form of describing the square root of negative 1. System.Math.Sqrt(-1f); (edit: that probably is not super useful, yet the underlying math when using x,y &OR +n variables as vectors or positions in topology will use complex numbers under the hood to make sure the equations return correct positions or values in n-dimensional spaces. Or you need to apply the maths yourself.) f is for float. Yet these fractals go beyond the Lim(ie: the limit) of floating point numbers, and I think require a different type of formalized math that involves so called "Big Integers". The logic is exactly the same. The system of maths is different.

I have a great passion for mathematics. Can I, as a doctor, study fractal geometry alone? If the answer is yes, what are the prerequisite mathematics to understand fractal geometry?

I would think so, yes. I followed a course on fractal geometry on the side and I was blown away by the first Theorem. For that you would need a little bit of prerequisites in metric spaces (complete metrics, Lipschitz maps, compact sets, Banach fixpoint theorem). We defined the Hyperspace (space of compact sets with Hausdorff distance) a set of L-lipschitz maps gives an L-lipschitz map on this space whose repeated iteration gives lots of interesting fractals, nl matter the set you start with! Ex. Sierpinski triangle

How do you render it so clean and crisp and 3d looking?

Probably some oversampling combined with a mathematically congruent coloring algo? Oversampling is very expensive though (literally and computationally). So maybe just the color algo choices? Perhaps a post processing layer for color correction, contrast and anti aliasing? The perceived 3D effect is basically a byproduct of how the algorithms are visualized,and how the human mind perceives reality in 3D.

What is truly amazing is how you can zoom this deep into complex mathematical objects via the use of some absurdly complicated non-floating point maths. Seriously: even with the "double" datatype on a CPU or GPU...you can barely zoom into the fractal at all. Eventually it turns into pixelated noise.
