By train across Sri Lanka | DW Documentary

Asia’s most beautiful railway line? The “Main Line” cuts through tea plantations and jungle, then passes Buddhist temples and relicts of the British Empire.
In the 19th century the British built a railway in what was then their colony of Ceylon. Their idea was to transport goods such as tea from the highlands to the port of Colombo. Today it’s mainly only locals and tourists who use the so-called "Main Line." The route is considered one of the most picturesque in the whole of Asia.
Our trip takes us from the capital, Colombo, to Ella in the highlands. Our first stop is one of the country’s largest elephant orphanages. And then on to Kandy, the former capital of the Singhalese kingdom. The city is home to the famous Temple of the Tooth, which is said to house the Buddha’s top left canine. The train then winds its way further up into the highlands. We watch tea pickers at work and go to a tea factory to discover where the aroma comes from. Nuwara Eliya is Sri Lanka’s highest town at an altitude of almost 1900 meters, where a racecourse still brings the colonial era back to life. The stations have also retained their own colonial charm: in 1901, a signaling system was set up to make the long journey safer. And those suffering from the altitude can catch their breath at the final stop, the spa in Ella.

My husband and I travelled to Sri Lanka before, we used train from Colombo to Kandy to Ella, it took us very long hours. But was very fantastic. Every stop over was really good, you have time to get food, have a coffee and check the station. The sceneries were amazing. Worth the time.

@@user-mk3vd6bf5d about 250kms, Colombo to Kandy will take 2 hours (120kms) then other 80 takes again 9 to 10 hours, because Colombo to Kandy is express train ( upto 100kmph) then very slow due to moutions. Pro tip - reserve the ticket before or otherwise no seated are granteed, also take 2nd clz tickets because 1st clz is ac and close doors.

Great doc. Went to Sri Lanka back in 2016 and did this very tour by train. On first part, to Kandy, I went first class and it was OK. Second part, from Kandy to Ella, I went third class. In doing so, I was able to perch myself in one of the open doors. Got some of the most beautiful pictures doing this. Being able to lean out, while going over bridges and gorges and steep angles mountainsides was thrilling and highly recommended. Beautiful scenery and people.

I was in Sri Lanka in Jan 2020 and took the train up to Kandy. The small, boutique was on a hill and every morning I watched big flocks of birds fly down the canyon and back in the evening. The train ride was so beautiful I asked for the panorama windows in the front of the train on the way back. Absolutely worth it. I'd planned to go to further north but then - - covid.

this is second time I am giving my comments on this video clip. Here in Vienna, Corona-quarantine.. Once It is removed, I will be immediately move to Delhi my Home Town. Then sure to Sri Lanka. I live in Europe. People here say Indians are very friendly. Though I am Indian but partial agree. Let one should visit Sri Lanka and experience how god had made them so cordial, satisfied and friendly. Though I own 3 Houses. I one in Delhi, One in Lower Austria.One is Ternopil(Ukrine). But after pension I wish to settle down in this Island till God calls me back.

A beautiful country of wonderful landscape mountains amazing water falls .indeed a very clean island beautiful beaches. just return home after a week of holiday in this beautiful island. many waterfalls which is made easier access for mankind to explore and enjoy the wonderful bath at the falls. well kept,clean.and amazing people. India Indonesia and many 3rd world countries need to learn from Sri Lanka in keeping public places clean. not even Malaysia is as clean as Sri Lanka..just not happy with the food from hotel and restaurant, maybe they can do better in this sector. other than that it's beautiful and amazing place to visit .in case you're travelling to this island don't forget to pack up some packets drink and biscuits our guide was wonderful person. very knowledgeable and speak good English..thanks Sri Lanka a wonderful island. 😘.

I feel sorry for the tea estate workers they have no choices in life, with their little income they have to look after their family and to educate their children. Though the estate owners says they have everything free( education, medical facilities) that’s not true. So, we decided to educate few children’s in Badulla buying them shoes, bags and stationeries and sending winter clothes from abroad. Hoping one day these kids will look after their families and help their communities. we haven’t met anyone personally we made a contact with a nice gentleman we are helping through him. We want to visit them personally when the pandemic over maybe next year hopefully.

We had a month traveling around Sri Lanka by train and bus, it's a beautiful country. The hill country is stunning. I even found Jaffna a very interesting, educational city. Whenever I watch this video , which happens to be quite a few times I really want to revisit the Tear Drop of India.
