This video looks at the real range for Hwy driving and best approach to selecting stops. Designed for those that havent driven Hwy conditions and would like their first trip to be stress free. Also shows the Hwy between Gold Coast and Sydney.

Have my Atto 3 for 6 weeks now here in Ireland. It's a great car. I drive on average 120km to 150km per day. Mix of Motorway and A roads. The outside temperature has been between mid-teens to low 20s. At 90k per hour average my real range is 350km - 360km. At 100 - 110klm my Real range is approx 320km - 330km. At 120km the real range is approx 280km. From solely city + suburbs runs I have done the indictive range would be well into the mid 400s, no probs. I expect these will all drop be and average of about 20 - 40km ( low speeds to high speeds) in mid-winter. The WLTP range for this car is 420km. This is important to note. Not 480km. I did a lot of research EV range for over a year before buying. My advice for anyone thinking of buying an EV is to look at the WLTP range and then ask yourself if you can live with half that. It the answer is yes you with have years of happy motoring, even allowing for battery degradation over time👍👍👍Oh, and home charging is an absolute Must have for maximum happiness 😂

We would probably do Strategy 2, as we normally take a break every 2 hours, even when not driving a EV. Having a stretch, pit stop and snack ( normally 30 - 45 minutes ), we have learned over the years it makes for a more relaxing trip. Good video.

I don't own a BYD (yet) but considering it. I'm hiring one from Sixt in a few weeks to drive from Brisbane to Rockhampton and back as a test. I anticipate stopping to charge 2 or 3 times. Thank you for this informative video of your trip to Sydney! Looks like the quicker method is definitely #2 by only charging to 85% rather than waiting to go all the way to 100%.

I haven't gone electric yet. Interesting to see that stopping more often cuts your charging time which is anti - intuitive to me as an ICE user. The other thing that seems to do my head in (as i'm not used to it) is that in an ICE car you get better mileage on the highway, but of course in an EV in the city when you're not moving it doesn't use the charge so that's inside out and upside down in my mind. Great video for those of us wanting to learn more about it though. Thanks.

I believe that happens because the charging speed slows down btw 80%-100%. Taking more stops, before it reaches 80%, reduces the total charging time.

In my experience the Atto best range speed is 85kmh. But you dont lose much range up to 100kmh. But at highway speeds it's not very aerodynamic compared to the Tesla M3. Over 105kmh the Atto guzzles energy. The roof rack probably cost 10-20% depending on speed. We recently did Sydney to Canberra non stop, starting with 90% and arriving in Tuggeranong (south Canberra) with 13%. Distance 305km, increase in altitude +600m. Nice ride, no problems.

Hi I’ve done a few long Atto runs from Townsville to Ballina a couple of Townsville Rockhampton runs and a few cairns trips I work on average of 17 kWh per 100 km highway cycle travel at around 105 kmh indicated, I usually plan on top up electrons every 2.5 hours whilst having bladder break I’ve been using a better route planner app it’s pretty good you can set Atto parameters and it does the work for you re strategies I use 19 kWh as average in app so always have bit up my sleeve particularly up here as charging sites limited 😁👍

Electric cars are extremely sensitive to drag. The electric drive train is so efficient that small external changes are far more visible than on ICE vehicles. So a roof rack (you mentioned you had one fitted?) can make quite some difference. The speed has also quite some impact (doubling the speed increased the drag 4 times). If you look at Bjørn Nyland range test of the Atto 3 (kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6q0ZZuohtOWsLs) you can see it can do 445km - but he did the test at 90km. Unfortunately he did not do a 120km/h test, but If you compare a car that does about that range at 90km/h (Nissan Aria: 447km at 90km/h), the range at 120km/h has gone down to 308km. So about what you saw in practice. Unfortunately the software in the Atto3 is not very sophisticated and only calculates the range based on some fixed average consumption. If you have a lot of city driving mixed in this is good enough, but for long distance you need better tools. And I just checked ABRP and it agrees with 4 stops...

Thank you 🙌😊 Your videos 👌 I have an Atto 3. I love my car and I recommend, however, you are providing advice that BYD should have readily accessible!! I recently drove from Scarborough to Witchcliffe and the kms on the battery were reducing faster than the kms I was travelling - this quickly became very stressful for me. My trip was mapped out according to the battery capacity and the location of charging stations. Seeing the battery dropping quicker than expected was NOT fun at all! On the way home I ensured I left early should something happen, as I drove home the same occurred and it was a substantial difference too. A comment for BYD…….. I spent over $60k on purchasing your vehicle and my down south journey was hindered and stressful! At $60k+ (in a brand new vehicle) I should be confident I’m safe, and travelling with ease. EVs are NEW, you need to do better and make more information available. You were no help with a home charging station - and now even with solar panels at times when charging all my power cuts out. You were also no help with charging station locations or any tips on how to best look after my battery. I’ve had to google everything - hence watching these KZbin videos now. The car is great and I do NOT want to discourage people from purchasing one, but as mentioned EVs are new, so you need to provide more knowledge so the general public can be correctly informed. Not only was it stressful but it was unsafe. I mapped my trip to what the battery said, thank goodness I kept an extra 100km otherwise I could have ended up in the middle of bush on the side of the road on my own. So do better BYD.

The quoted 420km range is for urban + highway. I’m not surprised that you couldn’t achieve anywhere near 420km and that the realistic range was 300-320km at highway speed with a loaded car and a roof rack.

I've been watching this and other videos of your channel and I take good information and ideas to use them as a benchmark to my own Atto 3 experience em Brazil (named as BYD YUAN PLUS around here). I used your figures and calcuculated the trip performance, I came up with 95Km/ph average. This is importante to me to plan my future trips and choose the best Km/ph in order to extend the rage. Thanks for charing this kind of videos with the ATTO3 community. One thing... I wonder if you can say what kind of app or softaware you use during the trip, where we can see the actions of speed up and downs all the way. Thanks and greetings from Brazil.

Thanks for showing this, I find it really interesting that you actually spent less time charging by stopping more frequently. Out of curiosity was the regen set to high or standard, and did you drive in ECO, Normal, or Sport?

Stategy 2 being better than 1 is counter intutive and surprised me. Regen Standard and in Normal going to Sydney and Eco and Regen coming back. There was no difference. I was in version 1.0 and believe regen drive mode is better in 1.5.

Strategy 2 is better because the charging rate typically slows continually from 80% onwards, so if possible it is much faster to recharge to 80 or 85 and move on. By chance, did you use A Better Route Planner? I would be curious to know what it would said to do.

@ATTO Owner, how you did connect the mouse to the multimedia system? That's give me the idea to plugin a BDO with USB and use better routeplaner (in hope that cable must not be to long). BDO with usb for security reason.

Just need more charging stations, more regularly spaced. I drove to Canberra last year from Brisbane and anything more than about 150kms without getting out to stretch was uncomfortable. I'd rather a quick 20-30 minute charge session (from as near to zero to 50% or 60%) every 150kms - 200kms than doing it the first way. I'm sure this problem will be solved, just going to take a little time.

On a related note, p90 of the manual describes the driving range display mode can be switched to ‘dynamic’ which sounds more useful than the default NEDC calculated range display. I cannot find this setting. Does it exist?

On a claimed range of 480 KM , actual 300+ , battery pack sould have been 80KW , If BYD keep publishing such fake figures I see a class action coming pretty soon. 60KW pack just does not add up.
