The BYD e6 electric MPV has generated a lot of interest in India. But it’s not because private car owners can buy their first electric MPV nor is it because it’s affordable. In fact, with an ex-showroom price of nearly Rs 30 lakh, it’s expensive. However, it’s invited a great deal of interest owing to its plus sized battery pack and claim of delivering a real-world (and not just lab tested) range of 415-520km.
The e6 will be sold to fleet operators, the true champions of testing how a car fares with long-term high-mile usage. A trump card for BYD is their independent battery-development and production capability with even the semi-conductors for their cars being built in house. While BYD (Build Your Dreams) is not a household name for most in India, they have sold electric buses currently in use across several cities in India. BYD is also the company that manufactures Xiaomi mobile phones in India.
