I have to disagree about importing limitless labor. The first reason is not economic. Cultural cohesion with affinity for freedom is the ultimate economic infrastructure. Not all groups of people are open to the concept of free markets and, yes, that is correlated with genetics. Inter-ethnic conflict is the norm and always will be. We don't need more conflict. It is rather obvious that certain populations/cultures are literally incapable of fostering an advanced economy. The second reason is supply and demand. Importing labor necessarily lowers wages. The Middle Ages saw the most rapid advancement of technology in the history of the planet and formed the basis of modernity. It was not a coincidence that the massive population decline from the plagues lowered land prices, increased wages, and allowed rapid social mobility. We need less population density and higher average talent (as in the Middle Ages) - not the converse. By your assumptions, India should be the most advanced nation because they have the most people. Silly.

Happiness is an inside job. You can't buy it. Most people try to satisfy inner fulfillment by buying outer possessions. It doesn't work that way. All it is, is a distraction to your inner pain. Someone with real inner self-worth has it even if broke and stripped naked...and they don't need a zillion tats and a nose ring that makes them look like a barnyard animal to be whole. One definition or formula for happiness is: 1) Something to do. 2) Something to look forward to. 3) Someone to love. 4) Someone to love you. If you are a simpleton and don't require much, you can be happy with just looking towards the arrival of each season to fulfill "something to look forward to." You may look forward to a bike ride or a walk. Others may require more. We are all different in our requirements. But that's not the point. If you have no purpose to live and hate life, then not much for you to live for. Just don't get caught in escapism of always being occupied with the future. You can look forward to something, but still be mindful of the present...and enjoy life today, this very minute. I'm an archivist, among other things. I don't do it for $$...I do it for love. I work in a stupendous number of interesting areas. I got enough work for maybe 10 lifetimes. Every day I get up, I can't wait to dig into work. My biggest fear or worry is I will die and can't get more of my work done.

@@billpulido Here is another lesson about suppy and demand. Yes, America does supply (manufacture) shoes. However, is it enough to meet the demand? The answer is NO. Whitch is why the US must import over 50% of those goods to meet the demand. BTW, the demand for New Balanceand Red Wings (Red Wings used to manufacture most of it's shoes here in American, but now that is done primarly overseas) is far lower than Nike, Reeebok or another popular brand. Please learn more about the relationship between suppy and demand, you'll live a better life.

GDP measures consumption. The fact that GDP is used as measure of the economy's health is not a random choice. One of the consequences of using GDP as a measure of economic performance is that the government can goose the GDP value in the short term by increasing spending.

I have to comment on what Peter is saying about the imports dynamic. Albeit he is correct about the data on who produces these products that we consume. But i must say that we most certainly can produce much more of these products he’s referring to. It’s a matter of changing the system by which goods are produced where and how. So in other words, if Trump were to increase the tariffs substantially the balance of these products being produced overseas would begin to tip the other way. Momentarily goods would become scarce and expensive but slowly eventually it would be feasible for companies to produce them here again. Just as it took years to send and outsource all of our manufacturing elsewhere deliberately btw, it would take yrs but come back to us.

@peterponcedeleon3368Күн бұрын
The challenge with your belief is that you are assuming manufacturing will come back to America to the extent that we need it. Have you contemplated that it is very possible that manufacturing does not come back to America? Because that is a real possibility. Let’s assume that we lost all of our imports due to these massive tariffs. America’s standard of living would immediately plummet. It might plummet so deep that we as a nation simply cannot dig ourselves out of that hole, for the simple fact our nation is dead broke. you have a lot to learn about economics. Most of the cult of Trump are clouded with ego and pride. If Trump does go through with this, he will have the same exit as Mussolini did.

@@peterponcedeleon3368 I agree with you that the US economy would suffer but it’s hard to say exactly. Let’s say we experience a deflationary depression for about a year and wages decrease significantly. US labor costs become competitive again. For the same reasons all the products Peter mentioned began to leave the US and be made overseas was purely for labor cost savings. If we as a culture return to higher quality over inexpensive products this would reverse this trade imbalance as well.

They buy it as their goods for the whole year. This is what has been going on for years, and this is what helps people afford these things. This has been going on for years, and its not good, ppl just think its normal. Trust me, people did not used to be so worried about affording simple things like soap. Children in schools did not get yelled out for wasting something as insignificant as paper. Basic, Basic things are a fortune now. People are in denial that this is due to population overshoot.
