1) Recently, one of the engineers working at google had claimed that AI being developed by google has attained the status of sentien ie., it is able to think and becoming conscious. This has sparked a wide debate across the globe. Pros :- - it can enhance the service delivery mechanism of various organisation - it is cost effective to the organisation when it comes to marketing - and thus, can focus on other areas of work like - enhancing the quality, etc Cons :- - the Data that is fed to the computer may be biased - this will cause wide ranging negative implication on the marginalised and minority sections of the population who already face such structural bias; and AI will only perpetuate the same (even in an exponential manner) eg., racial bias - it can be detrimental to the labour force which fall under unskilled and semi - skilled workers as there is a high possibility that they may lose their jobs to automation - the bias may result in disproportionate results when used by judiciary, intelligence agencies, etc Way forward :- The governments, private organisations, and the people at large through civil societies, etc - should frame policies and ensure responsible behaviour regarding the same .

2) Child marriage refers to marrying off a person before he or she turns of marriageable age ie., 18 for girls and 21 for boys. India accounts for 40% of the total 60 million girls who are married off before attaining majority age. The states that accounts for the same are mainly - Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, etc wherein more than 50% of the girls are married before the age of 18. Increasing the age of marriage for women :- - pros :- - it will give time for the girl to pursue her education - which will make her more self aware and self sufficient and thus, she can decide on her own without succumbing to the society’s views. - cons :- - over 56 % of girls are married off before the age of 18 - so this would mean criminalising her choices - despite the presence of child marriage restraint and prohibition laws - it is still rampant - so the same may happen while increasing the marriage age as well - it would increase cases before the judiciary - as such marriages would be valid however voidable at the option of the parties - it counters the existing legal provisions like - age of consent under criminal laws like IPC - which would mean that the girl can be ready to enter into a physical relationship but not start a family Way forward :- - focus should be on improving the socio economic conditions of woman like - education from primary to higher education; health; ensure employability, etc - which will make a girl self sufficient and self aware to make her own choices.

(Q)Is there a possibility of future AI technologies becoming "conscious"? Critically examine its concerns. (250W, 15M) Answer- Introduction: the news recently came in where Google engineer claimed that its new chatbot "LaMDA"/"Language Model for Dialogue Applications" is sentient ie conscious and have human like behaviour after he had conversations with it on subjects like - religion, consciousness, and robotics thereby opening a new scope of betterment in our daily lives. AI Pros: 1. Helped in raising crop yields, detect cancer faster, raising business productivities. 2. It could contribute more than $15 trillion to the world economy by 2030, adding 14% to global GDP 3. It could cause industrial boom due to its cost effectiveness in the near future, thereby enhancing the quality and quantity of of human lives. AI Cons: 1. Serous data privacy concerns--> the algorithm's never ending quest for data has led to our digital footprints being harvested and sold without our informed consent and knowledge 2. Bias--> data that is fed to the AI may be biased in terms of religion, race, colour etc that will lead to social, ethical, technical discriminations as the data comes from the human world. 3. It can be harmful for the unskilled/ less skilled labour sector as they might get replaced by the cost effective AI chatbots and lose their jobs. Conclusion: It is essential that we equip our people with education, training and support they need to take on the many jobs that will be created and also make AI responsible. Hence, Govt. and businesses must work together to develop a code of ethics- tangible standards and best practices to develop and use intelligent machines.
