Bypass thermocoupler on an outdoor patio heater

This video demonstrates how to remove the valve the is operated by the thermocoupler on an outdoor patio heater.
This can be helpful is the flame sensor is dead or the thermocoupler is dead or in my case the tube for the pilot light is full of mud from wasps.

I have the PG183H Patio Heater and while the design and model is different than this one, the concept is the same and now my patio heater works again. Thanks for taking the time to post a good DIY video for us.

You rock, this saved me well over $100 as I was considering getting a new patio heater because mine wouldn't stay lit. Great instructions, took me less than 30 minutes. Thanks!!

It took me a lot longer. I decided to replace the thermocouple but tried to take off as few pieces as possible. Lol. The hardest part for me was putting on the electrical leads. I only lost one screw. I didn’t swear the whole time. But eventually I saved the cost of a new patio and and getting rid of the old one.

Worked great! Thank you! Have 7 year old Hampton Bay heater, stopped working after a couple seasons, then left it out in weather for four years. Was about to throw it away and buy a new one for an outdoor pandemic gathering. Decided to try fixing it first. After cleaning mud wasp dirt out of pilot tube I figured it would work but still no go. Tested tilt switch and it worked fine. Just about to give up and found this video. Heater now works as good (if not better) then when it was new. Of course safety mechanisms (tilt and flame out) no longer work, but as author says these are for outdoor use and we would never leave it unattended. Saved me $200 and having to assemble a new one.

Have that same patio heater. Even though it's only 6 months old, the igniter and thermocouple are both having problems already. Thanks for showing us how to bypass it. I also use a torch to ignite mine, works great.

So after buying two new thermocouples on Amazon and neither one being correct for my heater, I contacted the manufacturer who sent me a new one for another $25. It still would not stay lite. Watched your video and in 30 minutes I have a heater that works perfectly. Thank you for posting this.

If you take out the magnet switch, he calls it a valve, and wipe the upper aluminum part with alcohol as well as the brass parts it sits in you may get it to work as intended. The oiliness of propane can insulate the grounding from thermocouple to magnet switch. The voltage is milli volts so it needs to be super clean.

Saved me $150 from not having to throw away the old one! My design slightly different but the principal is the same, get rid of that spring. Just be mindful to close the valve at the tank after you shut down so you don't lose that expensive propane.

First of all, my heaters have this little convenient access door too, but I took the whole damn thing apart because I didn't know what I was looking for, lol! Second, yours is the first one I've seen where the thermocoupler was bypassed this way. Most people just cut and strip the two wires, then strip and connect them together. Yours definitely seems safer somehow. Finally, I resent the fact that the rest of us channel owners are out here fishing and begging for likes, then you come on like "I don't GAF if you like it" and get over 800 of them, lol! Good stuff man.

You can also try cleaning the electrode tip by the burner with sand paper. I took your valve off but did not know what you broke off so i put it back in, made sure everything was tight then cleaned the electrode tip or whatever its called (by the burner) not the striker, and it worked right after also

I tried to replace the thermocoupler but the bolt is stuck so o have no room to replace. Instead i tried your route and i took out the spring and boom. It works! However, now i feel that it is eating gas very quickly. Could that be related? I watched the meter and it’s def eating gas quickly
