Bypassing VATS On My 1993 Corvette LT1 (First Start!)

In this video I bypass vats on my 1993 corvette with the lt1.
NOTE: This method will work for 1986-1993 Corvettes. 1994-1995 will need an obd1 tune, and 1996 will need an obd2 tune. All years will require the theft deterrent relay (TDR) to be bypassed after disabling VATS in the PCM. This method is how to COMPLETELY remove VATS.
I explain a little information on PASS-KEY, PASS-KEY II and VATS. This is the fix for whenever the resistor trick does not work. When the theft deterrent module goes bad, this is the fix to bypass the security system. Feel free to comment and ask any questions about the VATS system as I have answers to your questions!
Also, the engine in this car is brand new with hardly any miles on it at all since the rebuild. I was not expecting it to start when it did and therefore did not spend time priming the oil pressure in the system, and the first start had some lifter tick. But after a few seconds the oil got to the entire engine and the noise went away. Also discovered another issue that was causing a rough idle at first.

I have a 1993 Corvette.that I just bought. I replaced all of the sensors and also replaced the fiuel pump and the fuel regulator. The security light is flashing, even when the key is out and the doors are closed. The previous owner said he had a mechanic replace the optispark. I replaced the door switch on the drivers side. no change on the flashing security light. The interior lights do not come on when the passenger door is open, so I assume it's the switch on that door. I'll buy another switch.The car cranks and attempts to start when I turn the ignition ket to start position.. It does not stay running, but have had the car barely run for about 10 seconds. Fuel pressure is over 40lbs. and maintains when cranking. I did notice that whoever the mechanic was, put the serpintine belt on wrong. New Coil, ignition control module, and MAP sensor. Since the car cranks, I don't believe it's the VATS system. I'm guessing the mechanic bought a bad optispark. Any thoughts?

Mainting fuel pressure while cranking is a good check, that helps rule out vats. However, vats will also disable the fuel injector pulses, so you should check to see if your injectors are activating while cranking. First check the easy things, like is it getting fuel? Is it getting spark?

Thanks SOOOO much for posting this video!!! I purchased and am about to install the same ECM chip - but I have a question about correctly grounding the starter interrupt relay. I've located the three wires on the relay per your video - Purple, Black Yellow, & Black (Ground). My question is in the cutting and grounding of the "black yellow" line. Do I cut the black yellow in two - leaving it still attached to the relay next to the Purple at the top? Then ground it by splicing it into to the black? Just want to make sure before I go cutting wires. Thanks again for posting this incredibly informative video - really helped!!! Ron

Appreciate the comment! So yes you will cut the black/yellow wire. And then you can splice it into the black ground wire. It’s been a little while but I believe you splice in from the black/yellow wire sticking out of the relay. And when you splice into the black, you are just adding another wire to the connection, not cutting the black wire. If the end sticking out of the relay doesn’t work then try the other end of the cut wire. In this scenario there is no harm if you have it installed on the wrong side of the wire, so there’s nothing to worry about.

Here's one for you Ibotta vat system and plugged it in to bypass the chip on my key is just like two wires and goes underneath the dash you know it will start I do not hear a fuel pump and it does take a little bit of cranking to get it started and the alarm light does stay on and flashes. It idles fine but when I give it gas it will either die even a little gas what do you think I've replaced everything on it I'm wondering if it's another step I have to take for the ECM and that would be buying that chip that goes inside the ECM what do you think about that I did pull the fuse out that sounds the alarm when I do try and start it is that have anything to do with the fuel pump or anything I'm stumbling lost on it

On my 96 C4... this sounds funny but I turn the key on then turn the dome light switch on and back and the car starts, Because when I got the car the safe switch would go on and the car would not turn over but if I turned on the dome light it would start... don't know why and don't care as long as it works, My 92 C4 has no problem at all and I hope it stays that way.... If it does I will read the OHM of the key and order the by pass kit.

Lol that’s a funny “security” feature of your 96. That’s one way to prevent thieves haha. It’s been my experience that the vats system always fails at some point in the future, more often than not being the resistor in the key or the ignition cylinder resistor reading. They do tend to give you a warning in some shape or form before becoming completely inoperable which is nice

Top of China 😢 wall on intake manifold is leaking , looks like oil sensor, but isn’t, did a top end gasket replacement on my 93’

@@bluesxt great because I'm having internment no start on cordoned reman ecm. When it's cold no issues but warm outside I get security light and service asr light. Something funky communicating on CAN bus or faulty module. Will definitely be looking for chip. 93 vette

Hey yooo so question I have a 96 C4 it went from being moved starting no problem from 1 second to another to not start. Replaced starter thinking it was it and relays and still no start no crank, I’ve looked into this vats bypass so you used the chip bypass and not the module?

So the chip that plugs into the pcm only works for 1986-1993 corvettes. For 1994-1995 VATS will need to be programmed out. For 1996 VATS will again need to be programmed out but this time it’s obd2 so you can use something like hp tuners to do that, and then you’d still need to bypass the theft deterrent relay (TDR) to enable the starter to spin. Personally, if I were you with a 1996 corvette and it sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t… Measure the resistance of the resistor in your key and buy a resistor of that resistance to wire into your ignition key cylinder. That is most likely your issue and a resistor is much cheaper than a tune and relay bypass :)

@@devotedanaheim1575 not quite, the chip does not bypass TDR, it bypasses VATS. So you still need to bypass TDR like I did in the video in order to get the starter to work

@@ricardocastillovillarreal5714 I just googled VATS bypass chip for LT1 corvette, and you should be able to find it. It is not the little chip with 4 wires coming out of it, that’s for the f body camaros and firebirds. This is a plug in device that plugs directly into the pcm on an lt1 engine
