In 1986, at the bottom of a ten-year spiral into depression and self-loathing, Byron Katie woke up one morning in a state of joy. She realized that when she believed her stressful thoughts, she suffered, but that when she questioned them, she didn’t suffer, and that this is true for every human being.
Her simple yet powerful process of self-inquiry, which she calls The Work, consists of four questions and the turnaround, which is a way of experiencing the opposite of what you believe.
Katie has been bringing The Work to millions of people for more than thirty years. Her books, public events, weekend workshops, intensives, and nine-day School for The Work have brought freedom to people all over the world.

Because the TRUTH is "nothing is happening".... the mind creates the story which gives everything meaning, this is the egoic mind and this IS OUR PRISON. If you continue to believe yourself to be this person, especially your name which is the root of your illusion, then you will always suffer and never realize that you and everything in existence comes from unconditional love. You are the awareness which observes all things, not the body mind which feels, reacts and stores all illusory experiences🙏🏻💜🇨🇦🕉️

I've been doing The Work for about 15 years now. It's just one of those things that is pure, as opposed to the plethora of "self-help" procedures you can go through. It's simple and common sense. It's just a way of seeing something from different perspectives. That can be really helpful. Sometimes it can be very insightful.

@@Helter195 That's not how this works. It's not a one and done thing. You don't ever complete the work. It is a process. We will never reach a point where we will stop thinking, until we are gone. Many of our thoughts are automatic, and as people, it is natural that some of these thoughts will be stressful. The work is a way to process those stressful thoughts as they come, and look at our views from other possible perspectives, and see if we can find one that feels true and doesn't bring us pain. I also started doing the work about 13 years ago. It has helped me tremendously. I am not as reactive as I used to be, but I'm also still human. There are situations that come up, between friends, family, coworkers etc. Life in general. If I find myself stuck on something, I do The Work on it, and it always helps. This isn't a gimmick or a business tactic. It's a way for people to help themselves get through the tough stuff. If you think that this is something you do one time and then you're cured- then you're fully mistaken. It helps to truly understand what something is, before making up your mind that it's bogus or "not working". Also, Byron Katie has all her teachings of The Work (instructions, explanations, worksheets, etc) available for free to everyone.

A lot of people are stuck on trying to understand this literally. She is giving an example of how to transform your relationships because you also need to give up on your fixations which create barriers in your relationships. When we say, you are doing this, its a place that creates a barrier in the relationship. When we can hold ourselves also responsible to the relationship we can give up struggling.

Two great books to read: The Untethered Soul and Living Untethered by Michael Singer. It simplifies our understand of where our thoughts and emotions come from. Until we deal with the roots of those reasons, we just continue suppressing (resisting), and putting temporary bandages to our past traumas. The works is a great tool, but it doesn't work for everybody and it is not guaranteed that one cannot distort the results. Our mind loves to intellectualize everything.

May I share my experience with the work? I tried it a couple months ago and it worked a dream. I became more compassionate with myself and a lot of my self inflicted fears melted away. Until recently where I felt let down by being unemployed for a long time (whilst trying my best to get work- it’s terrible in the UK at the moment) and then all this work fell to the floor. I’m at my wits end. I need help. I have a therapist who referred me to this gem of a woman and I feel lost again, without control. How do people do it? How? Maybe I’m being too hard on myself. I don’t know. I just feel defeated.

How do you do “The Work” but in the first person? For example, it teaches to judge others, but in a situation where I want to investigate myself. In this case, I have thoughts about the situation, a way of acting, and a perception. It may not necessarily be about judging someone but about you, with a belief that influences your actions. How do you trace that belief?

I understand this from a spiritual perspective and especially since my awakening. However, anyone I would share it with that struggles and hasn’t woken up yet to reality will simply say she suffers because she tricks herself into believing good when others are doing wrong and letting them off the hook . They wouldn’t see it with enlightened non-judgemental eyes tat wish to learn more about our truth and our true nature but only in victim consciousness 😢

Because she’s recalling times where she has also lied to him. Humbling herself with the truth that by keeping the negative thoughts she is reacting to her own hypocrisy making herself suffer. Without the thought she lets him live his life and loves him anyways while also letting him make his own decisions. By doing the work you learn to let go and be more compassionate. She says compassion takes the place of anger! We make no progress if we expect others to take accountability of their actions. Should they? No. Because in this present moment they are not. The thoughts surrounding his actions are causing her to suffer. And her reaction to the thoughts are making him suffer. Dropping the thoughts allows us to choose not to suffer and love the moment as it is. She said “I’m not changing anyone’s world, I’m changing my own” That’s all we can do.
