He had terrible influences on him - his father known to be cruel, his mother drank, he had a foot malformation, he was abused as a child, he inherited a title but the estate was in ruin - there were so many almosts in his love life - he fell passionately in love in school with a young girl who got married and then his sister who he couldn't have - he was frustrated in love- he had an artistic temperament which tends to push against the norms of society - it seems to me he acted out to protect himself from his own emotions devouring him. I wish they could have had his love for animals and his writings touched upon more in this production - it needed to be longer for such a complicated man. Jonny Lee Miller's acting is extraordinary as Byron
Byron is famous for writing. I am kind of struck by how little time he spends doing it in this film.

There's no substitute for passion, not even art. Without I t, there would be no Shakespeare nor Blake or anything that has survived the rules of society. A film like this is trying to put that forward, however difficult it is to do so. The excellent portrayal of Byron by JLM has the subtle and perfect intensity of Byron's soft nature and yet his unsettled moods which were more hurtful to himself than others. Ironically enough, Byron was an innocent soul, in that he did not see evil in what humans did, that's why he used sarcasm rather than make moral judgment. He considered instincts to be most worthy in humans. No wonder he loved animals so much. This is an excellent production. JLM's diction is very effective, Shelly's reading of Byron's poem is wonderful and the female cast is spot on. The best thing about this film is the subject matter. It's more about Passion than about Byron.

If only they had antidepressants, Byron would have had a life and we would no have Byron. As not many read him now and he would now long be dead what is the difference.

Poor Fletcher! His wife must leave with Annabella. =( Such a terrible life for the servants.

Indeed! I still wonder how that could be possible: A married couple, as a matter of fact! Didn't those 'aristocrats' have any empathy with their 'servants' at that time? Because they were 'just' servants? Disgusting!

The woman was devoted to him. It's hard to watch when someone spits in another's face. He wasn't in love - Yes, I know - but have a heart man.

Byron was right to get out of England--it was such a self righteous place---

I'd probably pull the same kind of antics with a sword if I heard my wife giving birth. Guess I'm not cut out for fatherhood (not to mention Byron is my hero).

I've read studies that suggest he had Bipolar Disorder, but it isn't difficult to deduce that he had some form of mental disorder. He was a very damaged, broken man who was abused as well as most likely, as you suggested, also had a mental illness.

I feel bad for poor Fletcher. How he can stand working for Byron is beyond me. Even back then, he must have been able to find another position.

Like a lot of people with “artistic temperament” Byron was a self a centred man. Vain, self indulgent and selfish

But Lewis Caroll born later on and with a similar astrology was very different from Byron. I think Byron needed the Catholic faith and confession. He used women like Lady Melbourne in replacement and it did not work. I am reading a lot on this. And Medora had two children that joined the church. He was not an atheist and he gave Allegra to a nunnery because he did not want his child to be like the Mother Claire who was a feminist. My personality is very similar to Annabella or Lady Byron and I have faced similar situations like her with two boyfriends I had. They were a house of all evil and sin. I think Byron was easily seduced by women because he did not have the love of his parents. I cannot believe Annabella's aunt knew all this but did not told Annabella but she wanted them married. Lady Melbourne was his confidant and Annabella's aunt. She was not a good woman. I also recommend to read on Anna Catherine Emmerich a Holy Mystic the was born in the romantic era in Germany. I think Annabella was a saint. I think Byron needed a lot of help and guidance and he was lettering with Augusta at 16 and he told her about the quarrels he had with his mother. I think it was a case of grooming in part. Like why a child has an iphone? Lettering was similar to have access to social media. Byron was Scottish but he could not attend the Catholic church which had been destroyed early on leading to the Anglican church and other religious movements. But his thirst and deepest need was to be a Catholic and have an older man to guide him. He needed help. He spoke to the wrong people asking for help. Not holy women like Annabella who had help with the confession. Anabella made Ada Lovelace, Byron's daughter to confess before dying. Annabella helped with many charities. She was a very honorable woman who wanted to help. But she could not with all the burden. Men need the church. Wives now have to be therapists, psychiatrists, doctors, religious leaders, confidants... We need men to marry without carrying on their shoulder such tremendous trauma. Also, sorority is about being chaste. Claire and Augusta were not chaste women and they harmed Anabella who had been a chaste woman before and after marrying Byron.

It's so bad he and Gus could not be married, I mean if they could've, then he would hadn't have married Annabella, hurt her feelings and turn totally mad :( I know it's kinda odd (for some of you gross) the fact that a sister and brother fell in love....but if they truly loved each other then...why not?

Can't you see how incongruous the first part of your post is with the second? Free spirit? It's easy to be play the 'tortured free spirit' when someone else is paying the bills.....and I don't mean just money.
