This lady needs some serious training or needs to pick another career. Instead of pursuing the suspect, she stops and yells for a biker to get off the road, as the perp continues to drive away. She obviously should not be on patrol being pregnant, but she shouldn't be on patrol, period. Even her whole interaction before the bystander, she sounded like a high schooler trying to demonstrate authority. She sounded more like a whiny teenager trying to control a situation. Have to disagree about the bystander in that the trooper needed help and this was obvious. This guy single handedly made sure everyone got home (or to jail) safe. The guy has as you say martial arts skills, and he kept the restraints to a minimum, and did not keep the choke on for any longer than necessary ( if you watch closely). I have done martial arts for 30 yrs, and I cannot fault anything he did in this video.

Great comment! I love this bystander, he's a total hero. I have a question though, which might be a "fault" from the the bystander, why go to the ground in the middle of a highway? Can you be at risk from passing vehicles?
@Ultimagtr650

@@jaykpotter9149 I think the reason for the ground game was that it is easier to control someone in a safer, and more complete manner, than when allowing them to stand up. They could affect your balance, or even sweep a foot, but on the ground it is much harder for anyone unfamiliar to groundwork to resist, and certainly to effect a counter in order to get the upper hand.. He took him down as soon as he could, and the location was secondary to him focusing 100% on the suspect.

Just to point out a couple of things.. Bystander did not have a choke on the perp. Noticed his cupped hands over the top of perps windpipe/adams apple. He was allowing air and blood to flow through the perps neck. Dont know if that was intentional or incidental. If the bystander was as trained as he appears to be the armbar was a fail safe if the guy had escalated the altercation and reached for something to be used as a weapon. Notice that the bystander hooked his foot around the perps other arm as a control mechanism. Had the perp reached for something I believe the bystander would have popped that elbow and escalated appropriately. While not textbook bjj, as perfect situations seldom are in the real world, the guy showed a higher level of training and confidence and did a good job of controlling and not injuring the perp. Should he have gotten involved? That was his decision.

I remember this video first coming out and I was pregnant as a Detention Officer. Our policy states you have to have medical paperwork to be placed on light duty. Most doctors won't give you an appointment until after 8 weeks. Luckily, I gave my Lt a heads up and was placed on temporary light duty until I could provide paperwork. It was odd being labeled unfit for duty but I am grateful to have had such amazing support and that I was kept safe during the beginning stages. Most policies state that you have to be fit for duty, and being pregnant is not fit for duty. I hope her superiors didn't knowingly allow this.

As a very experienced BJJ practitioner, I agree with John on this one. A chin strap hold from rear mount is not very effective, nor an arm bar (not cranked), in a self defense scenario. Eventually he gets top position which is best. Knee on belly, mount, rear mount, all from top position is your best option for safe control and staying out of legal trouble. Hats off to the bystander for helping out the cop.

You see something morally wrong and just immediately respond by trying to stop that behavior. I did help a cop once. Cop was downright winded, I asked if he wanted me to go after him and he said yes if I could. I went toward the man, realizing slowly as I was losing distance that, one this kid must be an NFL player, two (I was carrying) wondered if I do catch them, do they have weapon? What if they get ahold of my weapon? Where did the cop go? "bad guy" went to a salvage yard of sorts and hid somewhere. I couldn't find him, cop wasn't anywhere to be seen. ... I had to back my way out of there and realized I was way in over my head. I considered myself in great shape at the time and was heavy into training mixed martial arts... But it only made situation much worse for me in my opinion. If I injured him, I'd be damned for using excessive force, if he got my weapon I'd be responsible for bringing it to him. If he had a knife and hesitated I'd surely get stabbed, minimum cut.... Later found out that kid wasn't a kid, but some dude on meth. He got away and reason he was being chased was never fully explained. Also never found out where cop left to. (bastard) He abandoned me. Had to talk to other officers. They just told me they know where I live if there's any questions. For one. Police wearing gear chasing bad guys is no joke. I was fresh on the start, in good shape, and every two running steps toward the guy he gained distance on me.
