@michael: IKR.Those cats can charge and easily jump and close that short distance in a flash. It was easy striking distance for the cat. Maybe it wasn't just too hungry? And he is shooting with one hand and missing whilst wasting precious time and distance holding his smartphone to record for posterity. Dangerously silly and not smart at all.

@@tarrantcountykid I could go into insane detail about how shooting from retention works and how dude can be bad breath distance away or 27 feet and it simply doesn’t matter they are going to get shot either way because you can point shoot from retention very very quickly. The best reason this rule doesnt apply for any big cats is because big cats. If god has any favorites in the animal kingdom, it’s those animals. They can jump 40 feet across. Imagine being able to jump across the street. The whole street no issue. People have no idea how powerful these things are.

In my case, I saw the lion first, and scared him off before he made the decision to prey on me. These cats are so amazingly beautiful, I'm glad I did not have to shoot. This is an everyday reality for some of us living in these mountains. I’m in Butte Falls which is way west of Idaho. Everybody here has a doorbell camera with a big cat, or bear in the view eventually. We have to be especially careful at night and in the mornings. When we go to our trucks to warm them up we stay extra diligent. We always check our roof and trees when walking out our doors. lol Things that go bump in the night here are all natural. Some naturally want to eat us.

I was riding my bike home on a trail that runs along the river in my town one night after work, and a mountain lion ran right in front of me. It was chasing something else but it didn't stop me from pedaling as fast as I could out of there. I didn't want the cats instinct to chase to kick in and target me. I didn't have a gun on me at the time. I wasn't financially able to own one which is also why I rode my bike back and forth on trails at night. Never again have I been on that trail. I started making my roommate at the time, now wife, drive me to and from work. I don't mess with cats. Even a house cat can ruin your day if it's mad enough.

Any animal that weighs 200 lbs., can run at speeds up to 45 mph., and jump 20 feet (straight up or across a wide stream) is something you don't want to mess with. Yes, firing actual warning shots in front of the beast where dust and rocks get kicked up might scare it away. That doesn't mean it won't circle back an hour later and have you for lunch. Mountain lions are more common in Northern and Southern AZ. Because of its legendary partying habits, the student population at ASU has scared them away.

if you are hunting in Idaho and a mountain lion is actively attacking you, you can legally kill it in self-defense, even without a hunting license or tag; however, you must report the incident to the Idaho Department of Fish and Game as the animal would then be considered the property of the state.

Pro-tip I picked up from dangerous game hunters in a video or an article a long while back- when faced with a dangerous animal that's that much shorter than you, counterintuitive though it may sound, crouch or kneel before you fire, get down on their level. That way it's like shooting at a stationary-ish target that's getting bigger. If you stay standing while they charge, you have to adjust your aim downward as they get closer

That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard, who ever said that to you wants you dead. I understand maybe if you’re far away with a rifle but not in a situation like this. The leverage it would give you over the consequences is so minuscule, If you miss then you can weave around at least while standing, you’re a sitting target when kneeling down. Also most small creatures will automatically feel more confident as you are no longer towering over them.

We live in 50 acres at around 5k elevation in the Sierra Nevada mountains, south of Mt Lassen. Our trail came pick up big cats and few times a week. It's not that they're uncommon, it's that 99% of the time you just didn't see them with your human eyes. I don't even walk around our own property without a hand gun. We have lots of bears to but I'm not so concerned with them, still a threat though.
