Measuring BYU’s recruiting is difficult. The fact that BYU consistently outperforms its HS recruiting rankings without regression to the mean suggests that the ranking system doesn’t accurately measure BYU’s talent, which isn’t all that surprising given BYU’s uniqueness. And whether it’s a transfer or a high school kid, I don’t think you can fault BYU if they lose a recruiting battle against a blue blood. It’s the peer schools that worry me. Outside position bottlenecks, BYU generally should not be missing out on LDS talent because of peer schools. I don’t know that anyone really tracks that, but it’s seemed to be less frequent since joining the Big 12. Also, Jake, it would be really cool to hear more about BYU’s strategy on NIL. Yes, it’s got to be spread around more, but there are some exceptions. I don’t think it would be all that crazy to pay more for a top QB, for example. But even that is complicated since football doesn’t have the lottery pick dynamic of basketball. You can’t recruit a kid with high dollars and have him sit the bench to learn and develop under and around guys making way less without serious risk to upsetting team culture. It’s complicated but not impossible.

BYU Football needs to do the same as BYU Basketball. We need to elevate our recruiting. Sure, we can pull some guys from FCS but we need focus our money and energy on top tier talent. We need to be recruiting higher than any other Big 12 school.
@JohnnyRocksUFO8 күн бұрын
Why are the media covering BYU such apologists? This football staff recruits at a bottom of the BIG 12 level. They can’t recruit, develop and keep QBs on the roster. The team over-performed last year in large part to turnovers, special teams and luck. You would think that would lead to a big jump on the recruiting path. We haven’t seen it yet. If the media and the fans don’t hold the staff accountable they will always recruit FCS talent while we watch 4 stars land at the other big 12 schools. When BYUs competition is always bigger stronger and faster, and completion percentages are barely 50% while struggling to run the ball, most years this will be a 6-6 team at best. That is not competing on a national level and the media should have the balls to say so. It’s their job.

The floor of byu recruiting has risen but it’s hard to see byu be this good on a consistent basis when they’re recruiting in the bottom 1/3 of the big 12.. they had a good season but this level of success is not sustainable year over year without a jump in talent
@ThereelBR8 күн бұрын
While I'm bugged by BYUs lack of aggressiveness in the transfer portal this "offseason" its obvious the floor of the HS recruits they are bringing in has risen significantly. Gone are the days of BYU bringing in a bunch of 1 and 2 star kids, the vast majority are now mid-high star prospects which undoubtedly raises the floor/depth of the team. I'm concerned with the lack of retooling through the portal of the OL/DL to date. However, let's not forget another portal window opens in the spring. I'll wait to see how it plays out before passing to much judgment. But, I do think they need help on both sides of the line of scrimmage.

Why is BYU recruiting players from lower talent pools? Why not work the transfer portal and bring in proven power 4 players?
@jeoffbenzos49597 күн бұрын
Proven P4 players are demanding a huge price tag. Kalani's recruiting philosophy is complete opposite of Kevin Young. He doesn't want to throw money at guys who haven't played a snap for BYU while we have players who have grinded for years in our program for nothing.
@dmtm11117 күн бұрын
@@jeoffbenzos4959That’s an incredible miscalculation on Kalani’s part. If he doesn’t experience a quick 180 he’ll regret it. The NIL and transfer portal has made his ways nearly obsolete.

@@jeoffbenzos4959 Basketball recruiting really can’t be compared to football. The budget is spread 5x more thin, and KY simply has recruiting leverage that few coaches in any sport have. I disagree that he just throws money at the best players and they come. It’s clear that the collective has a plan and my hunch is that it is to make basketball a self sustained powerhouse(cheaper, less staff) before turning the attention to football.

Kyle is probably a good OT and he could even end up being a star at BYU, but he's not ranked as a recruit on 247 and that means fans have no idea how good he is or can be. Right or wrong most fans look at recruiting ratings to decide how optimistic they should be about a class. Most of us have never seen these kids play before. And I think BYU fans may have been hoping for more of an uptick in recruiting in football after a successful season. But it takes time for those good seasons to impact recruiting and the rating system also often wrong. We need to be patient with the current recruits and with BYU improving their recruiting.
@dmtm11117 күн бұрын
Patience? This is our 3rd 10 plus winning season in 5 years. How much longer before we can expect to see that “uptick”?
@jiacheng237 күн бұрын
@@dmtm1111 We've seen an uptick every year since BYU was invited to the Big 12 but I think you're asking about a more substantial increase. That might happen this year or the next. I typically think it takes 2-3 years after a special season to see the results in recruiting for that season. It can happen sooner but for BYU I typically expect it to take more time, not less.

The idea of Colorado playing BYU is great BUT for me the underlying reason that bowl game was made was so 2 of the better Big12,teams would not be playing 2 other teams matched up with a SEC or a Big 10 team and show them up. Kind of like when TCU played Boise state a way back. The SEC and Bug 10 teams and that Bowl committee use that to protect their conference. They get richer. The rest of the conferences get the crumbs.

Wow how things have changed.....9 months ago you were telling us that BYU was never going to compete in the Big 12 until they hired and paid position coaches more money. "Do more with more" to quote you. You then spent several episodes telling us that BYU's recruiting dept is horribly understaffed compared to Utah and Utah State and will never reach the next level until they hire more people, because that's how you solve problems, you add more people........ Now you call out some random Bill dude on why he is out "over his ski's" with his silly "Hot take" on the recruiting portal.

As a Kansas Fan - it would be crazy to expect football to keep up with basketball. Recruiting a team of 85 where you have 30+ contributors and recruiting 13 players having 2-3 be major contributors and 3-4 as a supporting cast, its a different world. Football is so hard to recruit and evaluate talent. There arent national circuits and year round leagues for football. So many 4 and 5 star players never become anything. How many 0 stars and hardly recruited players has BYU brought in that have become staples and day in and out contributors. Zach Wilson, Allgeier, Prassas this year --- this list goes on. If you are mad about missing out on kids from the big 10 or p4 that are 2nd/3rd string over guys who are playing significant minutes outside the p4, then you're out of your mind. We lost a ton of players to the portal in recent years that weren't contributors on our roster then weren't contributors at "lower level" schools. What makes you believe a backup at another school can be a contributor at BYU...

In my opinion BYU does vary well in the Portal... Especially in vetting them. In my opinion the best programs are going to bring transfers from the portal only because their highschool recruit isn't developing as fast as expected!!! They're playing in the playoffs tonight with an FCS head coach and a bunch of FCS players.

BYU has no great recruiter on offense and you can see it with the lack of big time signing. You won't unless you bring in someone on offense that will bring big talent, AROD Fesi and Harvey are ok coaches but not recruiting. Offense needs to catch up to the defense.
