After many videos finally I exactly understand what flash duration is and what to do for improving.Thank you for clear and brief explanation 👃

Thanks for the great video. Given that you are using a quality light or a low enough power that you get a short flash duration, do you need to shoot with settings that kill any ambient light without the flash in order to freeze the subject? Also, what happens if your rim or hair lights have a slightly longer flash duration than the key and/or fill? Will that cause motion blur even if the main lights are firing fast?
@byuphoto Жыл бұрын
Good question. Yes, you need to make sure that your flashes are powerful enough to overcome ambient to freeze the subject. We try to keep the ambient light as low as possible and use a low ISO to mininize how much ambient we need to overcome. A quick test yo can do is get your light set to the level you want to use, then turn them off and take a photo of the subject with the same camera settings. If you see the subject you will have to turn up the lights and stop down more if you want to minimize blur. If your rims and hair light have longer flash durations than your key they will show more blur than your key. If your lights have a very short flash duration, the main reason for any blur is usually ambient.

So here are 2 questions (fairly new amateur photographer w/2 week experience with strobe). My questions cover information not really presented here. 1st: Let's assume for the moment we use flash t0.1 duration in a controlled indoor setting to stop action (i.e. and we have a black frame to start with) much like your football player diving to catch the ball on the matt. Do you generally use a stopped down aperture and movement parallel to you to acquire sharpness of face/eye or AF-C? Same question with outdoor freezing of motion with HSS and shutter speed. 2. I do not own a flash meter and have not played with my flash enough to answer this question for myself yet, but when using HSS to stop action, your power on each of the flashes is reduced. When lowering the power on your flash unit to obtain a faster flash duration time, your power is reduced. My question is, generally, if using the same unit to obtain a similar exposure in a similar environment, which generally provides more power output for the shot? Reducing power output? Thanks in advance for an excellent video on this concept. I stayed away from hypersync since I do not own a flash unit that has this feature, but it seems as though the built in IGBT circuit is the best way to cut flash duration time. Yes? Thanks.

1st answer - Yes, I'm tracking his movement and shooting at f/4.5. 2nd answer: Depends on the situation and the lights you are using, but I feel like when you use hypersync you are less efficient than using the flash at full power. We will be doing a hypersync video soon and that would be a good concept to test.

Makes my head hurt. When you shot the football player the background was black. Was that a result of light placement and the camera?
@byuphoto Жыл бұрын
The background is a matte black cyc, and we're careful to make sure our lights don't hit it.

I’m always confused as to how having two lights next to each other makes the lights brighter?
@byuphoto9 ай бұрын
The best way to look at it is that light is additive.

Before this video I used to think the higher the number on the strobe the shortest the flash duration 🤦🏾♂️ thanks helpful
