The famous byzantine Lamentations of the Tomb of Christ, sung during the Matins of Holy and Great Saturday (Holy Friday evening). The official name of the hymns is "Εγκώμια", which is greek and means "Praises". The Praises (although considered being hymns of lament) are chanted in Plagal 1st and 3rd Tones, which are actually used for chants intended for triumphant occasions. On this performance parts of all three Staseis of the Praise are chanted. Note that in the beginning of each part, the second verse is chanted in arabic.
Title: "Εγκώμια - Α' Στάσις / Β' Στάσις / Γ' Στάσις" (Praises - 1st / 2nd / 3rd Stasis)
Service: Holy and Great Saturday Matins
Performers: Greek Byzantine Choir

Reading the comments below makes me sad. Can please offer some words of clarity? The Eastern Mediterranean world used to be united, much like Europe or the United States is today. There were Arabic and Aramaic speakers, Egyptians, Persians, Armenians, Slavs....and Greeks. They all used Greek language much the same way we are all using English to comment now. Culturally, they were a mixture of their local culture+ Greek, just like today people wear jeans and listen to Western music etc. Spiritually, they had what we know today as the Orthodox faith. Politically, they were united in what was known as the Roman (and Byzantine) Empire. The invasion of Islam shattered that unity, leaving mostly Greeks and Armenians, and pockets of others. But for a thousand years, we were all brothers, something we should remember.

Already in the 5th century the Churches were divided within the Roman Empire; there was a cultural dichotomy between cities and the countryside; the Roman Empire did not conquer the Persian Empire so the Middle-East was divided and within the Persian Empire there were different cultures, religions and populations who lived quite seperate lives. Greek was the lingua franca of the Roman East but it certainly was no unity. The Arab conquests brought with them an enormous unification of the area. The 9th century caliphate was a political union stretching from Spain to Khorasan (Bactria). Still to this day Arabic is the lingua franca of this now politically divided region. The unity with the Greek north was broken however and Greek culture started to focus more on the north - the slavs and Russia - areas which traditionally were under the influence of Latin (Romenian is a Latin language and Poland and Hungary are also Catholic). This brings the point that North Africa never belonged to the Greek cultural zone. St. Augustine lived in the modern day Maghreb but read Vergil and wrote in Latin. Yes I am a historian of Late Antiquity :)

what roman empire you are talking about, the byzantine empire was the only empire and our beloved father, emperor st. Constantine (the 1st christian emperor) moved the capital from Rome to the Byzantium and renamed the city Constantinople in 350AD. the Persian Empire had no presence in the middle east, by 640 AD the persian byzantine borders was located within nowadays iran (i.e. outside of the middle east), whereas a christian Arab kingdom "al hira" was located in between, that kingdom occupied the area of nowadays kuwait, south iraq, west KSA including bahrain and the arab emirates, and the capital of that kingdom was al hira, which was destroyed and grounded by the muslims, the only city to survive the so arab (non arab islamic) invasion was busra (located on the arabian sea in south iraq) Arabs as well had no presence in syria, the borderline between the arabs and the byzantines was located in nowadays borderline triangle between jordan-ksa and southeast syria (i.e. their presence was limited within the arabian gulf), the capital of the ghassanid kingdom busra al sham was a mixed greco-arab city located in south-east syria on the syrian-jordianian borders, and that was the west most expansion of the arabs, we are talking about the real arabs, and these arabs were orthodox christians (100%), only minor tribes were pagans (they counted less than 10% of the arabs at that times) and they lived in the area between ksa and yemen only, the rest of arabia was a homeland of many nations living with christian arabs. throughout history the persians had a one time presence in Mesopotamia during the times of our beloved prophet Daniel, and that was meant for a reason, but that occupation lasted for few years and disappeared thereafter, syria-lebanon-asia minor-north egypt are greek homelands, the romans were invaders, the byzantines were locals, whereas the muslims are invaders, they are not local and the vast majority of them are products of rapes and slavery of foreign nations, they bare foreign DNA. your knowledge is not accurate, and you need to review your sources. the byzantine church was never divided, and the locals of lebanon/syria/asia minor/ north egypt are ethnic greeks following the greek orthodox church, currently the patriarchate of Antioch is occupied by non greeks (or greek traitors) and its an abnormal situation that started after the genocide of 1820. Syria means "holy Aramaic homeland", and the name can give you an idea about the natives of this territory... it is the home land of one race and one culture... occupation cannot wipe the truth. St. Augustine was a phoenician living in a phoenician city when the phoenicians were the only natives of that area, the western phoenicians were finally defeated by the romans in the third punic war and the romans started to destroy the phoenician and greek settlements throughout the Mediterranean, however, the islamic conquest finished what the Romans started and they blew the entire face of west and north africa, including spain, portugal and many european cities...

dear.. emperor costantine was a roman emperor ; costantinopolis was the new capital of roman empire, you use byzantinum /byzantinum in a wrong way.. before 476 is totally not correct, and also in the Eastern part of roman empire, latin was the main language...after the born of holy roman empire in the older Eastern roman empire (now you can call it byzantine) greek was the official language...

Yigithan İnanmış Jesus himself, even in his obscurity, dreaded the gathering of crowds, and where possible avoided them. Everything in Christianity that matters is from individual to individual; collectivities belong to the Devil, and so easily respond to his persuasion. The Devil is a demagogue and sloganeer; Jesus was, and is, concerned with individual souls, with the Living Word. What he gives us is truth carried on the wings of love, not slogans carried on the thrust of power. The risen Christ came to save Jew and Greek, Greek and Turk. Mesih dirildi! @@DrDiabLLC so you are saying that 1000 years after the death of Christ the entire church was in error? No one is saved till the orthodoxy appeared? What you are portraying is ungodly pride. Jesus established one church but people divided, and who did has sinned already. When Jesus will return for his church will be one bride not two. The church of Christ cannot be divided. Mark 3 24If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. 26And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand; his end has come." That's why Satan has his grip strong on the church today because christians are busy with quarrelling than gathering. Colossians 3:11 Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.

I am using my daughters account sorry.I am Orthodox and a Reader in the OCA. I was raised and left the Latin rite, I needed more spiritaul disipline and orthodoxy was that piece of Christ's puzzle that I needed. I believe we have more ancient traditions that we keep and preserve where the west does not. But we as Orthodox must realize that it was the Emperor who made both Patriarchs of both Rome's Old and New drift apart. I believe someday we may reunite but for now let us do as Christ would have, and that is love each other. Because when we stand before him at that terrible judgement seat and our records ore revealed to us he will judge us and tells us all our faults.

no it is not a mix, it is a pure byzantine chant, it is an eastern Greek heritage, when we say Greek we mean ethnic Greeks and not limited to those living in Greece... you can introduce words from any language to this chant, but that will not change the chant, its a divine byzantine hymn.

"I believe in one Holy Catholic Church" I am an Orthodox Christian. The word has Greek roots. I would agree that its' use by the Roman Church when defined as meaning "universal" is a misinterpretation, for if this definition were real would'nt they have preferred the Latin Universalis (Universal)? There exist faults in both east and west. It is my hope that these schisms can be resolved with the new Roman Pontiff and that our Patriarch can achieve reunion. May the peace of the Lord be with you

Brothers and Sisters in Christ, lets not fight for anything or anybody. We shall invite all people to listen and accept such divine music. These are not made by men but implanted into men by angels high above through Holy Ghost. Let's not stop or comment or fight with anybody even if they do or contain porn. We SHALL NOT BE STAINED nor will our Christ,then what if we could save their soul by accepting them ! That's what God intends and had come to earth for- to save all+

I'm not saying this to be hateful, I swear. I think this in mostly greek but sometimes arabic. I speak arabic fluently, and at 3:34 after the chorus I can understand maybe 90% of the words (i'm not perfectly fluent though) They are talking about ascension of the soul.

Themostamazinguy Hmmm, I don't think so. I hear those verses in Arabic on Holy Friday and we speak Arabic (Greek Orthodox Church of Antioch). Coptic is, as I've been told, quite different from Arabic, so if you could understand it, and assuming you don't understand Coptic, then there's a good chance that it's not Coptic.
@Themostamazinguy

RealMuthafunctioninG Coptic sound similar to arabic because Coptic is like a little brother to Arabic. But you're probably right
@MathemaEducation
@MathemaEducation 9 жыл бұрын
Themostamazinguy Yeah, I'm not sure what Coptic sounds like. I've only ever heard it once from a friend's voice mail. It very well could be close to Arabic. But to the original point, I'm pretty confident that it's Arabic. Just out of curiosity, is the Arabic that you speak Egyptian Arabic? I'd be guessing but that might be close in accent to Coptic, not too sure though.

Actually... ancient greek is NOT the basis of all other languages.. hahaha... first of all, there were other languages MUCH older than greek... so that is obviously wrong. Yes, greek influenced many languages that came after it, but only in the stream of languages.. for example.. here are a few of the language families we have... Greek is only in one of these.. the indo-european...and it is the only language on its particular branch of those languages... it has been heavily borrowed from ...but you cannot say it is the basis of all other languages.. that is patently false... Niger-Congo (1,544 languages) Austronesian (1,276 languages) Indo-European (585 languages) Sino-Tibetan (472 languages) Atlantic-Congo (432 languages) Afroasiatic (372 languages) Trans-New Guinea (315 languages) Pama-Nyungan (240 languages) etc............. Just trying to keep it real!! (grin)

Forgive the ignorance of my following questions dear ones. I am a traditional Roman Catholic who absolutely loves the Divine Liturgy. I live in East Central PA, so am blessed to live near many Eastern Catholic churches. I frequently attend both Ukrainian and Ruthenian Liturgies. I have noticed some differences. Can anyone explain them to me? For instance, more kneeling in the Ukrainian church (virtually none in the Ruthenian). Praying the Holy Rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy also seem more common in the Ukrainian churches. (Again, this is simply my observation). I understand that the Ukrainian church came to union with Rome before the Ruthenians. I would never use the word "better", but is one Liturgy more traditional than the other? Or perhaps the differences I am seeing are matters of individual parishes? Thank you and may God bless you all my brothers and sisters in Christ.

You do realize some of the voices in this are Arabic, right? Christianity isn't about defending one society or another and it is kind of befuddling to see it perverted to mean such. This is a lamentation over death of Christ, not some rebuke of middle eastern society.

@@adrianbarbacena6853 I n the tomb they laid you, you, O Christ, who are Life; in amazement angel armies lift up their song as they glorify your self-abasement, Lord. Now we magnify you, O Lord Jesus, our King, we pay honour to your Passion and burial for from foul corruption you saved us through them. Fairer he in beauty than are all mortal kind, now a corpse we see, unsightly, bereft of form, he who beautified the nature of all things. Bitterly lamenting, ‘Woe is me, O my light! my heart’s longing and the Light of the World, alas! Woe is me, my heart’s desire’, the Virgin cried. Lord, your pains I worship, and your burial praise, and I magnify your might, Lover of mankind. By them I am freed from passions which destroy. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Word, we sing your praises, as the Lord God of all, with the Father and your most Holy Spirit, Lord, and we glorify your burial divine. Both now and forever and unto the ages of ages. Amen. Now we call you blessed, All-Pure Mother of God, and in faith we hold in honour and venerate the three day entombment of your Son our God. I t is right indeed we should magnify the one who grants life, you, that stretched your hands wide upon the Cross, broke and smashed the might and power of the foe. All Earth quaked in fear and the sun concealed itself, O Saviour, when, O Christ, our light, you set bodily, as the light that knows no evening was entombed. Like the pelican, you gave life, O Word, to your dead children, wounded in your side, you let life-blood flow, letting fall life-giving drops of blood on all. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Great eternal God, co-eternal Word and Holy Spirit, look down in your goodness on those who rule, grant their sceptres strength against the warlike foe. Both now and forever and unto the ages of ages. Amen. Wholly undefiled, Mother, who gave birth to life, pure Virgin, ends all scandals which still beset Church, and as you are loving, Mother, grant her peace. E ach generation offers, my Christ, for your entombment in hymns and songs its praises. The Noble Joseph takes you down from the Tree, my Saviour, and in the tomb he lays you. Let all Creation join us, as to the Creator our farewell hymns we now sing. ‘O my sweetest springtime, O my sweetest Child, where has your beauty vanished? Myrrh-bearers came and sprinkled sweet myrrh upon your tomb, Lord, at early dawn they come now. Peace unto your Church, Lord, salvation to your people, grant by your Resurrection. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. Father, Son and Spirit,O Trinity, my One God, have mercy on the whole world. Both now and forever and unto the ages of ages. Amen. Count all your servants worthy, to see, Most Holy Virgin, you Son’s bright Resurrection.

In my opinion religion doesn't even need to come into this. I'm agnostic anyway so you'll ask why am I here? I'm here because of this magnificent music. You needn't be Christian to love the music and the qualities held within. Why argue who's god is better? I mean we all know the Mormons got it right ;) jkjk or am I? What a twist of shyamalan consistency. I say this music is great and here for us all to enjoy. Why needn't be considered.
