I actually looked them up after this, and the reasons behind the ceremony are even better. To you from failing hands we throw the torch. Be yours to hold it high. The motto is from the poem "In Flanders Fields" by John McCrae which was written in 1915, the year the Canadiens won their first Stanley Cup championship. The motto appears on the wall of the Canadiens dressing room, originally at the Montreal Forum and currently at the Bell Centre.

Rolle Westin I have been a Canadiens fan since the 1967 expansion albeit living in Wisconsin. I have long wondered how a nine-time Stanley Cup winner Claude Provost has never had his #14 retired and eight time Cup winner Jacques Lemaire hasn’t had his #25 retired. And the Hans haven’t pushed to get Provost in the Hall of Fame.
