Played trombone in a cumbia band in Austin, TX around late '80's and heard the most interesting syncopated rhythm sort of duet between a large muted cowbell tape wrapped around it and a timbale simple rim tap or it might have been a bongo. The rhythm started with cowbell...diddle diddle DIT...Timbale...on the down beat Tap Tap...again...Diddle Diddle DIT Tap-Tap. On top of this constant driving rhythm they played Cascara style which seemed to create an interesting syncopated energy I'll never forget. Any idea what that's called or have you heard of this combo of rhythm played like this? Thanks for your reply.

I'm not sure. But when I played in Texas with Tejano musicians, drummers told me to make it "dirtier." They wanted more fills, sort of like you're describing, to contrast with a basic polka beat. ... for example, Richard Solis, drummer for Latin Breed, played rhythms like you described on the kick drum, bell of the ride, etc. So, I don't know if what you were hearing was traditional or just making things interesting.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing! I don't have timbales yet but I'm going to practice this on the drum set. Cascara on the hi-hat and the clave as a cross stick
