Alkan Symphony is famous for its 4th movement, but its 1st movement is like a hidden gem.

The first movement is my favourite Alkan piece. Can’t wait for the concerto too!

Brilliant piece, already at the first video of the symphony with the first movement I wrote a quote by José Vianna da Motta how brilliantly written the first movement is. But the sad beauty that emanates from the second movement and the romantic beauty in the trio of the minuet can bring tears to one's eyes. (It's just a pity, it seems to me, that Hamelin played the funeral march a little too fast and didn't pick up some of the emotion, at least for my taste, and the piano didn't quite justify the piece with its sound). And the fourth movement is again utterly plaintive in a typically Alkanic way. Here Alkan shows something that Chopin used to be very envious of (and for which Chopin was criticized by critics in his compositions), Alkan was able to continuously maintain an intense tempo from the beginning to the end, developing the melody and building on it further and further to the absolute climax of the piece without a single unnatural interruption or stoppage. Otherwise, thank you for the upload!

If you're looking to do more Alkan in the future, I think his Grand Sonate would be a good one. There's high quality album recordings by Hamelin, Maltempo and Morishita.
