You should add your fineline tape last so you can pull it off without it being trapped and flaking paint all over.

More than one way to skin a cat. I add the fine line last sometimes when I have something to follow but if I’m creating the line, I just create it.

Sweet job on taping the tailgate letters. It makes you wonder how they did it at the assembly plant. Most likely a rigid template. One thing for sure, with the ability to disassemble the bed parts for work allows for a more comfortable experience. I believe you mention that exact point about being comfortable after the rotisserie build. About 31 videos ago. Thanks so much for sharing!

What kind of high build primer are you using and how long do you let it cure.
@StoutCustom2 жыл бұрын
To cover the filler, bond to exposed metal, and something thick for heavy blocking I use PPG’s Vibrance VP2050. I usually finish it with 180 then on this one I used PPG’s Global D8005 high build primer on top to fill the 180 scratches and give me something easy to sand with finer grits in preparation for paint. Dry time on the VP 2050 is overnight to 4 days…it’s slow drying and best to wait several days. The D8005 dry time is about 6 hours but preferably overnight.

How do you lay the tailgate flat on a 77 for re clear? No place for a tape line on the top side? I did get a few drips around my letters hanging it upright initially!
@StoutCustom2 жыл бұрын
I painted and cleared it the first time hanging. I got some slight runs as well in the letters. Second clearing was with it flat, taped off on the seam at the bottom and rolled the back edge at the top so there was no hard line. Just a soft edge where the clear blows across but doesn’t wrap all the way around the edge. If there is any transitional area it can be polished away easily.

what paint gun would you recommend for a beginner? i’m wanting to spray sealer, base and clear out of it. I know a lot of people have a separate gun for each but don’t have 3000 for just guns right now lol!
@StoutCustom2 жыл бұрын
3m makes their accuspray gun kit with different nozzles for different materials. Gives you lots of options and fairly cheap to experiment with different tips to find what you like. Harbor Freights Black Widow gets a lot of favorable reviews as well. I’ve noticed most cheap spray guns are copies of more expensive name brand stuff. Biggest difference is they usually don’t last as long but if you’re not in a body shop spraying every day they work fine.

How much base do you think you used for entire truck sprayable? Your work is flawless. Hope to see this year at C10 nationals
@StoutCustom2 жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly we made 2 gallons of color which is 4 gallons sprayable. I had to repaint the bedsides so they had color applied twice. When it was finished I think we had a quart of unreduced color left or maybe a little more. Thanks for the compliment and thanks for watching! I hope the truck makes it as well.

Painting the last piece of my squarebody build next week, the tailgate, i see you hung yours, would you recommend laying it down or hanging it? will be doing bedliner on the back side after it dries. As always, your videos are a huge help!
@StoutCustom2 жыл бұрын
I will sand down this tailgate, straighten out any issues with the lettering and reclear it laying down. So definitely laying flat is best for a flatter finish with less chance of runs on all those letters.
