You guys are awesome! Thank you for giving us a glimpse of your life and this incredible study. I’m a C6 quad injured one year ago right before starting medical school. I am hoping to get into an epidural stimulation study, and to continue this kind of research as a physician as well. It really gives me hope for more positive outcomes in SCI treatment in the near future. Keep kicking ass Jerod!

@Rahul Sinha I am a c5/c6 quad. My accident was 6/28/13. My cord was severely crushed. My neck was so out of line that my C5 was resting right on the very edge of my C7. My C6 was completely shattered. It was so bad the doctord thought my cord was severed or at least partially torn and I could be on a ventilator the rest of my life. Surgery went great and my spinal cord was not even torn. At the beginning I couldnt do anything at all for myself. I had no left hand movement or left tricep. My right tricep was ok just a little weak but my right hand could barely move and was so weak that even if I got my handcaround a cup I didn't have the strength to hold it. Once I got to the rehab hospital they did the exam and I was classified as Asia A complete. My doctor there was basically saying that the condition I was in is pretty much how it was gonna be especially because of the severity my spinal cord was crushed. My neurosurgeon told me he believed I could make a recovery but could take years and each spinal cord injury was different. My OT in rehab just wanted me to learn how to live with no hand movement and we kinda butted heads. In the first several weeks my right hand was continually getting better and was able to hold a cup within that time frame. My left hand finally started to move after a month. I would lay in my room at night staring at my left hand trying to move it and just picturing in my mind it would. Then it finally did after 4 or 5 weeks. My left hand still isnt 100%. My index finger is weak but other than that it's good. Same with left tricep. That came back about the same time but is still about 50% of what it was before. In the 1st 6 months that was all I gained back except for a little feeling in my right leg. The other thing I did regain was when I was being discharged from the rehab hospital after being there for 3 months they redid the exam and I had sacral sparing so I was reclassified to Asia B incomplete. The doctor told me that after 6 months that whatever I gained back was pretty much it. That I might get a little something but nothing much. Which she was right until about the 1 year mark. Around that time I started feeling more and more below my injury level. Some of my core on the right side was functioning some but very weak. After about 2 years I was able to walk in water. I still cant move my legs but with the weightlessness of water I can. Gains have come in stages. I will notice places on my body that I can start feeling. Back in May of 2019 I could finally feel all my core muscles working. I can feel the muscle burn in my abs and lower back so I am working on the strength part now. I had my testosterone levels checked because our type of injuries can severely affect it. Well mine was 93 and its supposed to be between 400-700. Its hard enough building muscle with these injuries and with testosterone levels like I have makes it alot harder. So im starting a testosterone regimen which should help tremendously with strength and my energy levels. Keep your head up and most importantly dont give up. Ive had moments where I did start to give up and it put me in a really dark place. I still have bad days but its to be expected. If you want leave me your email or Facebook and keep in touch. We can follow each others progress.

@@theangryquad3127 its definitely a tough time to be a fan of either team. I dont know what the Giants were thinking with thehead coach they hired. As a skins fan I dont want it to work out but the football fan in me does. I want this division to be great. I wanna see playoff style games between these teams 6 times a year. As nice as it would be to see the skins dominate it would get boring after a while. If these teams come out and smash each other in the mouth would make for some exciting games. Redskins defense should be alot better with Jack Del Rio as the defensive coordinator and then adding a talent like Chase Young in the draft should really make a huge difference. We need guys like that with backs like Barkley and Elliott in the division. We will see what happens in the fall.

Very inspiring and I love both of your smiles you guys are so cute together. Great attitude do it which really helps day-to-day. My name is Pat my accident date was August 10, 2019 single vehicle accident I was ejected from my jeep and sustained a C7 T-1 spinal injury. I underwent spinal fusion surgery from C5 to T2 about 12 hours after my accident. I am a C7 in complete Asia C, So I have some sensation below my injury level but no voluntary movement. I’m working hard and PT and OT but I would love to get into one of these trials or studies. Do you mind sharing how you found out about the study how you applied and how you were successfully accepted? Also I know this is a little personal but I wanted to ask you about testosterone. I read that there can be benefits but also drawbacks do you mind sharing how you were able to get your doctor to approve that did you go to a urologist or to your main doctor?

Hey Patrick! Thanks for watching. Here's more on the study and how to apply -> victoryoverparalysis.org/ It took me a while to actually get into the study. I actually came to Lousiville before I was even accepted and got into other studies at the research facility. Four years later I finally got the stimulator. It was really easy for me to get on testosterone because my numbers were very very low. After I was involved in a testosterone study my general practitioner had no problem prescribing it. I now use a gel daily. Hope that answered some of your questions!
