I feel like it should be noted that you can get a c5 z06 for the same money as a c6 base, which eliminates the performance differences almost entirely. At that point its strictly about which one you like the looks of.

C6 will get you between 186 & 190 mph (convertible vs coupe) for the base & Grand Sport. The Z06 will get you 198 mph. The ZR1 will get you a claimed 205 mph.

Yeah, the trunk is much smaller, by 3 cubic feet, engine bay is about the same, you can ls7 swap the c5, but the older ecu isn't to advance, so it idles only decent, cant get the precision tuning. Id go c5 over a base c6 anyday, much more sleek, wider body, longer body, lower stance. Better in every way their. Looks with a c6 z06, debatable.

After owning both, I find the C5 way more predictable in handling where at the edge, you know you are there, whereas the C6 makes you feel like it is on the edge at 80-85% of its ability, but when you hit the limit it lets go quickly. I ended up selling the C6 because of the driving experience compared to the C5, which translated into more of a "driver's car" imho.

I had a car you'd regard as a "driver's car:" a Triumph Spitfire. You knew where the edge was. The car gave you LOTS of warning. I could slide around corners in a 4-wheel skid, no problem. Lots of road room and handling feel before I hit the "edge." In that margin between traction and the edge was lots of slop. Unsafe slop. It is a dangerous car. The C6 gives you everything until it has nothing left to give. In that lack of margin is safety. The C5 will slide towards danger. The C6 keeps you out of it.

@@connor3288 the C5 is more honest about how much lateral G you have left before you lose traction. The C6 feels like it is going to skid well before it reaches its capability, and it leads you to believe as you push it further that you are ok until you just aren’t. It may have to do with the improved ETC, but I’m not sure.

Good video, I'm surprised the C6 is 20 lbs lighter. I knew the power was much better in the C6. The compromise comes down to price. Yes the C6 is quicker, but it cost 50% more. I bought a mint C5 convertible, with low miles and a 6 speed for far less money than a kit cobra, and I've got a roof, windows, pretty good stereo, air conditioning and cruise control. In few years I might trade up, but this car has enough everything to keep me entertained. What's quicker? Newer Corvettes, vipers, Hell Cats, and Shelby Mustangs, And they all cost a lot more. Just like the C4 which is still incredible perfornance for cheap, the C5 is a bargain now.

I bought mine 7 years ago for 20k in MN - around July. 3 yeas ago I tried to sell it for 12k in August... Glad it didn't sell because that is what made me drop the supercharger in to make it new again. It worked!!!

I personally prefer the looks of the c5 myself. I think it's the best body style since the c2 and up until the c8. As cool as I felt driving my dads 66 hardtop when he owned one it definitely wasn't the most comfortable car to drive around. I'm currently looking for a c5 since it's the one I can afford currently.

The way i always explain c5 and c6. Is the c6 is really just a c5 but without the pop ups. For chevy at the time still wanted to be producing the c5 with pop ups, but big boi government said no. And so basically more or less the same cars, one just has a newer more powerful engine from factory.

C6 is a more compact, tighter package, yet has a longer wheelbase. The C6 has more tech, a better engine, a better interior, etc. These are the normal changes for any other car generation, like a Honda Civic, one gen to the next. Corvettes have tended to change design cues dramatically, skewing people's perception. Big changes between C1, C2, C3, C4, then C5. After that C5, C6, & C7 are quite similar, visually. Sure, angles & edges change, but overall shape is the same. The same as any other car model. The C6 is as mucha a C5 as any other manufacturer's model is the same model. Except that it isn't. A C6 is not just a C5 without popups. Popup lights are a gimmick. A cool gimmick, but a gimmick just the same. A slippery drag coefficient was a goal at the time the car was made without the thought there was more to the game than that: keeping the car on the ground. To provide downforce some drag is sacrificed.

C6 is better in just about everyway...but...with the money you can save by gettting a C5 and throwing a supercharger on it may be more beneficial. Bye bye C6 once that C5 is pushing 450+whp for the same price all in all as the stock C6...something to consider and think about.

I'm trying to decide between a C5 or C6 currently but my biggest factor is long term reliability. Whichever I get I want to pay off and keep forever if possible, throw a new engine in it when need be. The electronic factors are what scare me going with a C6. Any idea which is more reliable overall? Found a 2002 C5 and 2005 C6 im debating rn.

I absolutely love the C5, C6 & C7......... and I am wondering if the C6 and C7 suffer from the "could be fatal / expensive" torque tube rebuild that I assume is always eventually needed on the C5....... And if this exists on C6 (2008 and on for the LS3) as well as the C7 2014 to 2019 models (standard 460hp motor) models, is it more likely to be needed, or less likely needed on these later GENS with the assumption that Chevy improved upon this flaw from the C5's? In 2022, between these two for a first time Corvette owner just learning to do work on their own cars, which would you recommend? Initial price is less of an issue. I'm more focused on cost to own (recurring), driver feel, reliability and beginner friendliness with regards to doing your own car work. I've owned a 600whp RWD 6speed and I'm relatively comfortable driving a high powered car so not a new driver. Just wanting now to do more of my own work myself and enjoy something different and new

If you're going to work on it yourself and have it for a number of years, parts might be more available for the C6, overall reliability I think is fairly close except for avoid the early C5 years and go for a C6 after 2008 or after.

I have kind of backed off that a little bit, but I definitely would take a closer look at a Z06 just to make sure it hasn't been abused. All things being equal, I think it's fair to say as z06 may well have lived a harder life so take a very close look at it to make sure you get a good one!

You make great vette vids! Thank you. 1.5yrs ago I was shopping C5 vs C6 vettes.. and I too limited my interest to 01-04 and 08+. I chose to go 03-04 Z06 primarily due to value -vs- content (performance). I bought an 04 Z06 w/36k miles and so far its value has not fallen below what I paid. I've done one long road trip (1300 miles) and I have no complaints at all and don't regret going with the C5 in Z06 trim. (no car design and trim is perfect IMO) If / when the day comes that I seriously consider getting something else.. at the top of my list would be to keep it and replace the entire drivetrain w/something that'll run deep 10s AND be drivable on cross country trips. (maybe TT)

The C5 and C6 are the same car. I tend to think of them in this way: th C5 is the last old school Corvette, and the C6 is the first Modern, new school, Corvette. The C6 is just an updated, upgraded C5.

Everything in the video is true, and well done. For me, a very important factor was left out....looks. I find the front of the C6 extremely unattractive. That psudo- viper thing ruined it for me.(same goes for C7) It just doesn't look like a Corvette, to me, anymore. That beautiful , sleek look that the hidden headlights give the car. The affordable, non pretentious, American Ferrari . It was a great decision in 1963, and they should have left it alone until the total revamp of the C8.

Considering that the C6 is like 2-3x the price of a C5, it's kind of irrelevant, you can massively make up for the loss in performance in a C5 with "cheap" mods. it's a fair comparison in the sense that the cars are like nearly identical platforms to start with though. a C6 really is like a C5 with a bunch of great bolt-ons

As a German the choice is rather easy which one to get for the money. The C5 Z06 is really hard or impossible to find on the used market, unless they're in different countries. The C6 LS3 is quite pricey starting at 30k, but at least you can find lots of offers. And now comes the weird part: I can find cheaper 09 CTS-V than C6 LS3.

@@Toys4Life Let's see how it turns out. If I have 30k lying around I'll easily get the CTS-V cause they're a rare sight. Camaros, Mustangs and Challengers can pretty much be seen anywhere in Germany. But I only rarely see a first gen CTS, the ones based on the Opel Omega. Never seen a second gen CTS, let alone a V.

@@Corvolet5 I've spent seat time in a early CTS-V (SC version), base C6, and my C5 ZO6. The CTS-V is very impressive to drive. You'd have to do something like 4.10 gears and a tune in a C5/C6 to get that instant TQ feeling. Even then it would still be lacking as compared to the V. I'd imagine over there in DE it could be expensive to fix a CTS-V. And finding one that's not been beat on would be tough and expensive too. (finding clean ones here is not easy or cheap. The ones I see here I'd not touch at all. I think you'd be much more likely to find a clean trouble free vette than a CTS-V. But... it's possible.

@@wydopnthrtl Heya, sorry for the late reply (KZbin is a little messy with notifications sometimes). I might consider buying a C5 in one or two years for about 18-20k for a 2001+ model. The German market is kinda weird overall, that's for sure: even a C4 is terribly expensive, being around 14-17k for a base model from 1992. If you want more, you'll be spending 20k upwards. The C5 on the other hand is really inexpensive, and the C6 is hard to get under 30k if you just want the LS2. As for the Caddy, it seems like an interesting choice. But I kind of want a sports car for car meets and some summer drives, as I already have a Ford Mondeo for everything else. One of my buddies has a 2002 Pontiac Firehawk with the exact same LS1 engine putting out 350hp. Pretty impressive machine to say the least. He gets his spare parts from Rock Auto overseas, and the import doesn't take longer than 8 days to Germany. Which is insane when I think about how long some Amazon packets from Germany can take. The only real issue is to learn a few basic repairs and proper English, but I usually was top of my class at that language anyway. TL;DR thanks for the input. I'll probably get the C5 as long as insurance costs won't kill me at that point haha

I've owned both. Still have my '06 with the Z51 option and six-speed manual. The C6 is superior for me, and I like the styling much better. Never cared for the popup headlights. Frankly I think the C6 styling is better than the C7 and C8; I'm sure I will get some flak about this.

@@Toys4Life sounds like you know..... I'm in the OEM realm and have been for close to 30yrs. Project scope, cost, and target buyer all change at new model introductions. What the traditionalist finds offensive vs what the new buyer finds pleasing, is something we sometimes consider. But not always.... the more emotional the product the more its considered. And sometimes it's thrown out the window! (like in C6 fixed lights or the C8) In my experience over the years and at all OEM's that I've been associated with, costs is usually the largest hurdle we battle. Then engineering and marketing have to figure out how to "sell" the product within the cost constraints imposed. LOL... which causes ridiculous disagreements about the smallest things. Like Tadge had to do with getting the 8K tach removed from the C5.

No offense as I enjoy this channel. I would say that now we need a supercharged C6 owner to do a similar test from his perspective to get a balanced overview of the 2 cars. I have to agree the C5 interior is preferred as the C6 interior is "corporate/generic" down to the steering wheel. However even the C6 base LS2 and 6l80E are great improvements over the base(s) C5 LS1(s) and 4l60/4l80. I love Corvettes. Each new generation improves on the previous generation.

When it comes to the better looking of the 2, ill take the c5. I predict the C5s will go way up in prices. It's one of the Best Looking corvettes EVER, and one of the best looking cars of all time. Personally I would not pay the price difference of the z06 for .5 seconds quicker in the quarter than the non z06.. I can take the difference in price and put a supercharger on the base c5 and blow away the z06! But, I like my cars all factory original.

My son had the 2013 Grand Sport, got rid of the cat, and had it dyno tuned and a set of headers installed, he was getting 500 hp at the wheels, I drove it a few times and yes, it's fast and LOUD!!! Very fun to drive, he bought it new and when he sold it he got more money than what he paid for it. And did I mention it's a chick magnet, I wish he never would have sold it but he bought a Tesla which is even faster.

I have a C5 2004 now but either car is fine with me. I had a C3 1973 first. I guess I like the hidden headlights as the 2004 was the last Vette made meeting this criteria. 👍

@@Toys4Life the newest generation silverado has that, but still keeps that same old 6.3 liter like in a tahoe/suburban, yukon/yukon xl, escalade/esv. it's like having a corvette engine block, but using it to make it more better and efficient. L99 and LS3 are simulair, but the L99 engine has the performace and fuel efficency while still having that 6.2 liter v8 vith tuning potential

@@Toys4Life I actually like the body and interior better. The pop up headlights are preferable. I wasn't a fan of the magnetic door handles on the c6. The c5z is just a bargain.

I have a 98 C5 coupe and a 16 Chevy SS sedan. I never rode in a C6 but I know the LS3 is a mean-ass motor. That plus the 6 speed auto makes the C6 a terror. However, I never took to the C6 styling. Coming at you, a C6 has kind of a goofy smile appearance and the tail looks too chopped off. Chevy stretched the wheelbase of the C6 for no reason other than it had to share the assembly line with the short-lived Cadillac XLR. This lengthening of the wheelbase together with reduction of body overhang gives the C6 a kind of diecast "Hotwheels" look it didn't need. But I'll admit the Z06 and ZR1 versions were well done and help redeem the C6, styling-wise. I've resisted going to a C6 or C7 because of the great looks of my C5. The C8 has my interest but I'd have to sell the SS and the C5 to afford it.

@@Toys4Life I'm a car magazine hoarder. It would have been in Car and Driver or Motor Trend around the time of the introduction of the C6 and/or XLR. I'll check around and repost if I find the article but my issues aren't in order. I followed the genesis of the C6 closely at the time. The wheelbase thing was fairly common knowledge then and may turn up on the net.

@@clevlandblock I knew the wheelbase was longer, and the reviews I watched said they did that to improve handling. Although it seems to me that moving the rear wheels back will take even more weight off the rear wheels thus hurting acceleration.... I would definitely be interested to see what you find!

@@Toys4Life I recall reading that the wheelbase increase was due to Cadillac's attempt to get an improved ride versus the Vette and was not related to handling. It's not like the C5 was deficient in that area. You don't hear too much about automotive engineers increasing wheelbase by an inch or so to gain a handling advantage. Otherwise the Porsche 911 would look like a limo by now. The Corvette group had to bow to the wishes of the GM brass and their push to make Caddy world class at that time. The XLR concept was warped. The one Car and Driver test of the XLR that's on the internet said that the wheelbase increase was due to the bulkier engine and to better accommodate the folding top of the XLR...hardly relates to improving on the C5.

@@Toys4Life personally I prefer naturally aspirated for reliability and performance. But a supercharger ain't bad especially 600 horsepower. Im looking for lower but strong power, looking at ram air induction and a cam swap. Thats is, maybe exhaust. 410-420 horsepower.

Sorry . No corvette produced yet will shine with a C6. By far the best overall 'vette in history as of 2023 . Time will prove this out. C6 is ICONIC. Take a look at some video games and see which one you see. Oh yeah, where do you find an replacement ECBM for a C5 ?

If you don't already own a C5 or C6 I'd get a C6. But if your like me and already have a C5 I'd upgrade it to be better than a C6.

Wish you had done this as a 3-way comparo including an early C6 with the 400 HP 6.0 liter LS-2. Possibly the best bargain of the three. You did not mention ATs... IMHO, C5 and first year C6 with the 4L70 trans should be avoided due to poor reliability. Anyone after an AT car, consider the 6L80 equipped C6 only. And... C5 looks MUCH better without the rubstrip!!!

Appreciate the comments sir! I like the idea of the 6 speed if I were going auto but if you look at RPM and other High Performance builders they all get more high HP durability out of the 4 speed auto. The rub strip is interesting. I love it. A lot of people don't & remove theirs... I think it is close to 50/50 on love hate of the rub strip - very subjective. At the end of the day - research both cars (hopefully my video helps answer a few of your questions) determine what is important to you and then find YOUR Corvette!

Reputation for burned up bands, 3/4 clutches, torque conv. clutches, and valve body problems. Those comments apply to all 4L60s, most of which were installed in trucks. In a Corvette, driven moderately, may be less troublesome. As they use to say, "your mileage may vary".
