Looks like the same rendering as Fractalis. This is my first time seeing this game. Thank you!

I still recall this being pretty extraordinary "3D" for a Commodore 64.

I never beat that last dragon- the amount of slowdown made it all but impossible, I was basically just tapping the space bar as fast as I could and hoping, often in vain, that the computer was receiving my throw and absorb commands, never mind my aim being thrown askew by a hit. Thank you for the playthrough. By the by, for those unaware, the implication is that the man with the egg is your- I think uncle?- who mysteriously vanished, leaving the titular Eidlon, the machine you pilot, behind for you.

Figured this game out on my own years ago and loved playing it again and again! Wouldn't mind playing it again!!

"The team - Gary Winnick, Charlie Kelner and myself - played ideas off of each other to create The Eidolon. Gary's characters were the key elements of the game, and the remainder were mazes, fractals and effects. Ron Gilbert and I joined the games group to provide C64 expertise, and we created some impossible effects. Eidolon used full-screen sprites and particle models which were revolutionary at the time." -- Kevin Furry, programmer [The Eidolon - C64]

Never got the chance to pass the first level because I had it on cassette and the rest of the game was absent. Great to see the ending after 30 years!

Played this one the Atari 800XL, I could never defeat the multiple headed dragon, first time I see the ending after quite some years.

This game was advanced for its time, and it wasn't a bad little game either. The simplistic music has stayed in my head over the years. Could never beat the eight headed dragon at the very end though.

It's funny, I played this as, at the most ,12 year old, and I still have some feelings and nostalgic memories about it, and I don't know why exactly, but it motivated me to look for this group

Characterful game. Each level was a bit of a puzzle, since you had to defeat individualised enemies with limited numbers of colouted fireballs, and each end of level dragon required different tactics. Got my heart pounding.

Fascinating that the Atari 8-bit version is a bit faster and has a few more graphical effects, despite the Atari hardware being several years older than the C64.

The C64 had a pretty weak CPU even for its time. The 6502-based CPU in the C64 runs just over 1MHz, while the Atari 8-bit line used a 1.79 MHz 6502. So, in CPU-intensive games like this, the Atari computers actually have a pretty good edge, as do other home micros like the MSX and Spectrum.

I can remember struggling to complete this as a 12 year old ( cassette version), but went to a mate who had a disk drive,and after a marathon 12 plus hour sesh ( it was during a holiday period otherwise we would never have got away with it), we managed to smash it.

Never got to the end of this one myself, still play it it on one of my old C64's every now and then with the hope that one day I will get to the end... :-) Still amazing to think that long before Doom or even Dungeon Master the good old C64 was able to produce a 3D style game such as this and do it well given the limited hardware of the day... :-) Just goes to prove that you don't need Gigabytes of RAM and Gigahertz of processing power and Gigabytes of code to produce computer games that are truly enjoyable... :-)

This was one of my favorite and most memorable games for the C64. Very immersive, scary, and graphically impressive for 1985! I could never beat that final boss though.. lol. Thank you for the memories!

I remember back in ´86 even tough it was on the same machine (Commodore 64) this games was seen as a next-generation-game.

Wow I just started a very random 70's sci-fi animated movie and they mentioned 'Eidolon.' That's a name I haven't heard in 35+ years and I had a 'Whoaa that's an old ass C64 game's title too!' revelation so I came here to see what it was. I recognize the interface but I have no recollection at all of it being a dungeon / dragon thing. What's the gameplay against the 'boss dragons' ? I just assume they're shooting and we're shooting, but can we defend / aim ? Thanks for the vid @DerSchmu

the ending is a bit confusing. Was the dude supposed to be the vanished professor? It always saddened me to find a game with a captivating story, yet no real ending ^^

I played this on the Atari 800XL. Interestingly you can tell the Atari version is faster with it's 1.79Mhz vs. 1.0Mhz proc speed of the C64.. Cheers!

Question is - how you know how to finish level and how to kill level final monster? Which color "ball" to throw to which end-level-monster? I can see that different color ball is thrown, for different level final monster.

IIRC this was hinted at in the manual and/or I simply tried it and stuck with it cause it worked.

red, yellow, green, blue, red, blue, red, then all seven in order for level 8. :)
@sterling74 ай бұрын
@@zaphod77 Yeah... It's basically the same as the sequence for each of the "end level" dragons in the levels preceding it, only having to defeat each head.

This is a lucas film game, is that lando at the end???
@IanHodgetts9 жыл бұрын
My recollection is getting "stuck"at the L8 black dragon. I never did suss the strategy for defeating that. It was on a friend's C64 though (limited play time is my excuse) ;-)
