COMAC is using ARJ21 as a starting point to spread the support network to airports nation wide in China. That will ensure their product adopting airlines can truly run ARJ21 and C919 as day-to-day businesses as the flight frequency of civilian jets is very high. As reported the Russians failed to do so to support their international customers on SSJ-100 probably because of excessive running costs or lack of experience running such support network. If they can't make it on MC-21 the product will fail too as Russia's domestic market is not big enough.

You presented a good video. Since the Boeing 737 MAX debacle and learning the leadership of Boeing was aware of the problems with the MCAS System, I don't care if Boeing sells another jet. This was not an honest mistake, this was deliberate greed where 346 people died. Both COMAC and Irkut make a good jet. It would be good to see both companies enter the market. The COMAC C919 is less expensive to get into but still offers good economy. It could fly across the US and possibly from Los Angeles to Honolulu. If COMAC can guarantee service and parts, I believe it should be able to do well in the US market. China is now capable of producing a safe and reliable jet and with a cheaper price tag than Boeing, AIrbus and Irkut, it might be enough to sway those airlines who use medium range single aisle planes. Most airlines would probably want at least a 3,000 NM range. With healthy competition, these manufacturers can build good and safe aircraft and possibly even Boeing, once they clean house with all who were involved in the MAX mess.

@@chingweixion621 they have been modelling stretching the a220 to 500,700,900 & 1000 varients. What this means for passenger number I don't know. @@onlineo2263 you do know that at 200pax with 5 abreast, it is already 40 rows or the length of the A321. This is probably the 700 variant that you're talking about. It will take just as long to turnaround the aircraft as the larger A321. Unless airbus considers squeezing in 6 abreast, otherwise the most the A220 can be stretched is to accommodate 200pax. This would already involve major modifications to the landing gear to avoid tail strike during take off rotation. Any further are just pure speculation. For a matter of perspective, 270pax in single class means 54row or equivalent to the length of an A350-900 but a single aisle... That is a very long and thin flying stick...

I suspect that no more wide bodies will be needed in the future. The MTOW of the MC21 is 87 tons but a MC21X stretch has been proposed with MTOW of 155 tons and a range of 10,000km/5400nm. The MC21 has a wide cabin, wide seats and an aisle so wide you can get past a service trolley. This eliminates the “getting to the toilet” argument during meal service time against narrow bodies. It also means the embarkation disembarkation time is less as you can get past people halting to access the overhead lockers. The COMAC 929 was recently increased from 8 across to 9 across. I think this is a mistake, the A330 2/4/2 configuration is loved by passengers. If an A330 style 8 across aircraft were built with composite wing and body technology it would have superb range and performance.

Not even Aeroflot will be able to use it on Euro routes. Moreover, no market outside EU and USA because of 1) So I see MC21 flying just on Russian internal routes with stints in Belarus and China. I belive most importantly both manufacurers have to develop a good supply chain and service model. This problem really stoped the SSJ to be more succesfull and also in the long term Service and Maintanance brings a lot of money. So currently they clearly can't compete with Airbus or Boeing in terms of efficiency. It will be intresting if they can benifit from long waiting list on the A320 series and maybe can break in markets outside Russia or China. Knowing a habit of the communist world to promise way more than one can deliver, I will not be surprised if the real numbers will be significantly worse, the aftermarket support for both will be horrendous, and both planes will be sold mostly in their respective countries through the government-mandated sales. With China's market being bigger than Russia's, I would expect more of C-919 to he sold. The sales outside of their respective countries will be largely based on which airline executives they can either fool or corrupt. However, I expect the reputation of both models to quickly decline after a series of maintenance and breakdown setbacks. The Boeing/Airbus duopoly will lose sales in China and Russia but will not be troubled in other markets. Summarizing, this is a comparison between a bulls..t and a dogs..t. I wonder what would happen IF... Airbus ended up buying the MC-21 5yrs later and upgrade its performance? It will probably become a formidable A321neo replacement at the end of the decade. Like the bombardier C-series, the MC-21 also has a pretty solid foundation laid for the airframe. It is only suffering from underperformance due to inexperience. Bring in the expertise from Airbus or Boeing, this airframe will be a major player in the future. Will we see a repeat of airbus getting another great deal? With the B737max fiesco, Boeing is probably better off buying up one of these programs. But due to political reasons, it is unlikely that boeing will invest in any of these programs. Airbus on the other hand is more likely to do so especially with the MC-21 since Russia is considered a European ally and Moscow is geographically in Europe.
@chrismckellar93504 жыл бұрын
You have a valid point. Airbus already has the A220 programme which they can develop further as 5 and/or 6 abreast as a A320/A321 replacement. But that said, there is no reason for Airbus not to go into a joint with UAC to market and provide global spares, engineering and logistic support for the MC21 using Airbus existing global network. Since Irkut is now part of UAC which is developing the C929 in association COMAC, Airbus sees the C929 as a threat to the A350 programme may decide not to do any joint venture.

The problem with the Superjet-100 is that it is a Frankenjet monster. The SaM146 engines it uses is a one off design not used anywhere else. The low pressure section is made by Russia's NPO Saturn. The high pressure section is made by France's SAFRAN. Most everything else is like that too. So getting the right technical help can be difficult, as it takes a lot of coordination between the various manufacturers. It also takes a lot of coordination within the supply chain - particularly since there is not a large market of spares. With the MC-21 it is completely different. You can choose to go with CFM or Aviadvigatel for engines. And that engine manufacturer is responsible for their whole product. The Russians will still have to do a better job of managing the supply of spares for 'their' configuration (PD-14 engines and TA-18 APU), but much less coordination will be needed. The MC-21 might not have the same problem as the Superjet.

@@alexandernorman5337 That's not a reason . It's engine SAM146 derive from the French M88 core module. Engine seems to not last long when reach 5-6000 hrs. It might have better condition given any Russian engines in their civil built for a long time.
@alexandernorman53374 жыл бұрын
@@alexlo7708 - The engine "core" (high pressure compressor, combustor, and high pressure turbine) is derived from France's M88. The low pressure section (fan, low pressure compressor, low pressure turbine) is made by Russia's NPO Saturn. Thus the problem. If an airline experiences engine trouble, getting the right person to diagnose and find the cause and extent of condition is rather difficult. Unlike CFM (a joint collaboration between GE and SAFRAN), Powerjet (the collaboration between SAFRAN and NPO Saturn) has not been around very long and does not have the framework for the necessary technological assistance/cooperation for a lot of support. Add on to that the fact that no other airplane uses the SaM146 and so getting spares is a real problem. The Russians are trying to correct this in the MC-21 via a more simple supply chain. You can have either a Pratt&Whitney engine or an Aviadvigatel one.

@@alexlo7708 SSJ100 is a good plane. His problem with engines is just the reluctance of companies to negotiate. Therefore, I am glad that the MC21 is getting rid of Western components. Creating a project in cooperation with other companies is risky. The engine is also created in collaboration with the French. PowerJet SaM146 (SM 146) - turbofan engine with flow mixing. Designed for regional aircraft and is currently installed on the Sukhoi SuperJet 100. The engine is manufactured by PowerJet, a joint venture of the Russian NPO Saturn and the French company Snecma. Snecma is responsible for the hot part of the engine - the gas generator as part of a high-pressure compressor, a combustion chamber and a high-pressure turbine. Snecma is also responsible for the engine management system and gearbox. The nacelle is supplied by Aircelle. NPO Saturn manufactures the “cold” part of the engine - a fan and a low-pressure turbine, performs general assembly and bench tests of the engine. In November 2018, Oleg Bocharov, at the Transport of Russia forum, announced problems with the hot part of the engine and difficulties in negotiations with French partners and assessed the results of the development of the project of this engine: Well, the top of the regional segment is Superjet 100. We are experiencing the most powerful difficulties associated with our partnership with French partners in the SaM146 engine. They have a tough business model and they are not ready to go for symmetrical reductions in the cost of owning an engine. While analyzing all the problems of engine operation with regional companies, we see that they are also using the current situation, striving to occupy a more advantageous position in our disputes with the French. We understand that we need to create a replacement engine bank. The UEC has such a program. We received the documentation for the complete disassembly / assembly of engines on the territory of the Rybinsk plant. The first engine there has already been completely repaired, that is, disassembled-assembled. The question is commercial - there is trade, for how much we will agree with the French. We understand that the conditions that they set for the purchase / rental of replacement engines from PowerJet are unacceptable for Russian regional airlines. Just not acceptable and that’s it. And the quality of the engine itself, outside the warranty period and inside the warranty period, raises questions about the hot part (the hot part is the French production zone of responsibility). With this engine, we all the same live on. This is a decision of the previous periods and no one could know that it would go that way. Of course, we will suffer with this engine until we produce our own.

The 787 also has protruding cabin wall which means if you have a window seat and large shoulders you have higg chance of not being able to sit upright. The cabin wall curves in and eats up all your shoulder space for 1in3 window seats in the 787. So for regular folk in economy the 787 is actually the worst plane you can fly on.
