I did see that this week, although you should remember it was also from another industry affiliate/bookie promoter. It seems the new way they do things is to hold on to your money and if you submit to a small claims court to retrieve the money they say its fraud. It's dirty, I've seen another like that. All the while getting it into criminal court under the "we suspect money laundering".

The whole legal system stinks. The fact he got 5 years for a money crime is sickening. This was also my immediate thought. I was told when I was very young that the government only care about money crimes (specifically against them such as benefit fraud) but not the stuff we care about (e.g would you rather your neighbour be someone committing fraud in his accountancy job, or a psycho who likes to attack random people for no reason and rape teenage girls). This sentencing and others i've seen recently just confirms it! They only care about money crimes. Someone raped a teenager in Scotland recently, was found guilty, and he's not gonna spend a DAY in prison! The guy who killed that banker in an unprovoked attack last month got like a 2 year sentence. There was someone who killed a drinker in an unprovoked single killer punch who got like 18 months. This dude who took some money from a betting company who probably wouldn't physically harm a fly got 5 years!!?? Madness

You are spot on, when I first read this it was my guess it was Santandar who pushed for this to go court due to the fraudulent charge backs, it would be impossible for a betting company to take someone to court for bonus abuse or multi accounting alone because in the eyes of the law it isnt actually illegal, but it was handy to spin it that way to act as a deterrent for other punters trying to do the same in the future

Multi accounting is illegal if you’re using fraudulent ID. I know of one case that led to a prison sentence. The guy was using fake IDs with the same photo! Problem is as well. Big company's such as 365 have lots of dough to pay for barristers and high end lawyers. They basically made an example of him to discourage multiple accounting and most probably cost them more than the man won in lawyers fees. All bookies are bent as a bishops hook. They love the addicts who's lives are ruined on a daily basis but never ever take any responsibility properly. I've known mates who have had a lot if money from parents dying and blew the lot on gambling on the phone. Non warning or advice from the bookies just a disclaimer in their small text regarding gambling addiction . They simply do not care. It's like buying a pack of cigs with the warning on. We know the risks. Another thing I find with addicted gamblers, a lot do it while on the sniff or drunk. It's very sad.

Ive said it many times, Betting Firms should not be allowed to ban customers just because they are big winners. These Firms are more than happy to let someone lose big money regularly, they should not have the ability to limit or close accounts because someone is winning. The UK government is not interested in the slightest. If a rule was brought in to stop the practice of limiting or banning customers and if the Firms broke the rules there would be severe penalties and possible not allowing them to be available in UK it would be interesting.

It's a mafia style business model. The Italian mafia pioneered it in Las Vegas. If you won too much, they'd tell you to go fuck yourself or they'd break your legs or worse. The corporations that took over Las Vegas in the mid 80's continued the unethical business model of fleecing winners but didn't go as far as breaking bones or burying people in the desert. The reason why political parties aren't interested in sorting the gambling industry out is that a lot of MPs are funded by gambling companies and/or receive freebies off them. Some of them end up working for the gambling sector and/or regulators after their political career is done. Michael Dugher and Tom Watson are notable examples.

What most likely happened was he obtained welcome bonus bets on each of the account opened. As the terms of use state that this is one per customer and he was found to be the customer of all 1000 accounts it then becomes criminal in that he obtained money by deception. This is a crime. As you rightly said, if he’d have done this and lost every free welcome bonus they likely never would have chased him, but as he won they did. You need to understand that the terms of use can be used to convict for fraud when breaking those terms means the company loses out financially. So yes, I’m almost certain he got 1000 welcome bonus and many of them would have caused financial loss to Bet365 and there is the crime, T&Cs say you can’t do it, so the crime is fraud by misrepresentation / or obtaining goods or services by deception, both of which seem clear to have happened here.

Lawyers for big business are always into the 'profit protection' game, they won't chase 'mug'punters for the same activity, as no profit was made. A clear application of the 'rules' being subject to profit making accounts only. I doubt if long time losing accounts get similar or any scrutiny, but manage one lucky 'once in a lifetime' win, and that account will be scrutinised for a reason not to pay. Or as others have said, become better at gambling, winning more regularly, and they will simply close the account, with no reasonable explanation.

Sorry but this isn’t how it worked. It relates to bonuses obtained using ‘matched betting’ or other such schemes to withdraw bonus funds by using risk-free bets. And then withdrawing the same bonuses across multiple accounts to make thousands. The bank accounts used would have been the account holders accounts, and the account holders would pay the guy in cash minus a cut. I suspect Santander was simply involved as one party linked to certain transactions. In terms of the crime itself I agree it is debatable still as it’s a breach of terms and not a crime as such. It’s not a fraud if you have permission from the account holder. It’s somewhat unethical but then who are b365 to judge and the better outcome would be to identify and close rogue accounts using technology. It’s quite a complex scheme and difficult to execute. A lot of hours spent and even a job to run around the streets collecting money. Easier to start a legit business

Honestly, I hope someday someone will manage to storm down and literally bankrupt these gambling companies. I know gambling is a mental disease, but these companies aren't doing shit against this addiction, even though they say they are. Yeah right, you give an addicted person bonuses to bet and then say that you aren't doing anything wrong. Piss off. This trend needs to stop and I hope it will be a buble that will burst soon and die down just aswell as it rose up.

akin to letting an alcoholic buy alcohol that comes with 10% extra free or even costing 10% less than the off licence down the road. supermarkets should bare some respobsilibility and indeed perform checks on all people buying alcohol incase they become addicted too. i mean, some people are addicted to things like shopping, they will take out credit cards and get in to debt from repeatedly buying items they do not need and thats why i am standing up to say that shops need to do more to protect the consumer, maybe if a person makes more than one shopping transcation in a week the shop staff should be trained to pull that person aside into a private room and attempt to counsel them and certainly be carrying out a lot more checks in the process, everytime anyone buys anything in my opinion, just in case they have an addictive personality. lets see all these billion pound organisations going bankrupt!!! is what id be thinking if i lived in cloud cuckoo land and also listened to your rant

The gambling industry stinks. We need to nationalise the gambling industry and there's a very clear precedent for doing so - companies are nationalised when it's proven they haven't acted in the best interests of the general public or the country as a whole. That's clearly the case with our current crop. They blatantly encourage problem gamblers and flout/bend every law and regulation that comes their way, paying meaningless fines as a cost of doing business. There shouldn't be a betting shop on every high street nor adverts every 5 seconds on sports TV. The RTP on slots/casino games is criminally low and the restrictions based on horse-racing, sports betting and gambling of all forms is due to these companies and UKGC, who also need to be abolished as unfit for purpose. All the profit from gambling should go directly to the taxpayer as a shareholder in our new national gambling company, not into the pockets of greedy gangsters who would sell out their own granny for an extra fiver

"Companies are nationalised when it's proven they haven't acted in the best interests of the public or the country as a whole" err, not really. Companies are nationalised when they become worthless to the private sector and are making losses, but are essential public services so they are conveniently dumped onto the tax payer. I wish that I believed in fairies like yourself, but unfortunately the cold reality is that the system is predominantly ran by the rich for the rich and the public are little more than livestock who prop up the system, shepherded by the sheepdogs of the media propaganda machine

For me there should be more done about those with gambling addictions, if someone is placing a bet/s winning and then doing a chargeback about a transaction then I can understand why the likes of these betting companies would want to protect their business. Where as someone who constantly wins?? Either due to a lucky guess in the likes of the grand national, football or having figured out some tip off/loophole/exploit then maybe te industry should look into it further rather than punish someone who maybe innocent of having accidently came across a winning combination in a couple of bids.

@@adammm321When I say "account", I meant identity, I believe he had set up 1000 different identites. So theoretically he could have created about 100+ accounts with different bookmakers per identity. Easy to get 2k from each identity using free bets etc. A lot of work though, and arguably illegal if those identites were fake. The bookies will restrict you quite quickly if you are betting at a higher price than SP consistently, which you will be if you are getting value.

This probably isnt quite what was happening. My guess is, i havent looked into it, but he was matched betting. Santander dont allow customers to gamble, solely on their bank accounts, as in you only use the account for gambling purposes. This raised red flags for the gambler, who would deposit into the account, gamble, then withdraw. Im guessing he had 100s of accounts in santanders name, all feeding money back into the same persons name, so easy to flag.

Not sure why people think this isn't fraud. I was a gambling addict for 5 years and it cost me a lot financially. Often I was working month after month for over 2 years for literally no money, every penny I had coming out was going straight back out again, to repay payday loans that I'd used the money to gamble on. That said if he quite clearly breaches the terms and conditions of their site, they can ban him. If he then creates further accounts each time to continue using the site, and makes money out of it, it will be argued that it is fraud as they have closed his original account and do not wish to have any further business with him. As a private company they're entitled to do this, in the same way that your local builder could refuse to provide building services to you or your local pub could refuse to serve you if they wanted to, no private company is obliged to do business with anybody. Clearly his involvement in this had more to it, involving possible chargebacks (a form of fraud on it's own in this situation) and potentially making use of bonuses or "Free bets" applied to each of the syndicate's 1000 accounts to profit from. It's no wonder he was convicted of fraud.

This was handed to the police as a precaution for fraud and through tracking ip addresses all led back to Jon.
